@KeSean Woods This is called stall test. It's a standard method to test transmission. Yes, it'll damage the transmission by overheating fluid if you're reving it long enough, but automatic transmission itself is made for engage and disengage at any engine rpm range. If a standard test could potentially damage the transmission, you can roughly imagine the quality of the transmission.

@@Anactualrealperson I work in the auto industry with a transmission repair certificate. People performed stall tests since the 50s. When an automatic transmission is running, it naturally stalled itself by vortex flow generated by fluid coupling even without applying a gas pedal. It's designed to be this way, otherwise, you won't have any torque to move a vehicle in the beginning. It's not a solid connection like a manual transmission. The chance to break a healthy automatic transmission by stalling it is impossible. When the engine reaches stall speed, it won't climb up.

Change cvt fluid and filter at 60k and every 30k after that. Change transfer case and differential oils every 40k. It is also important to flush your coolant every 40k since your transmission cooler is the main reason in the first place why these torque converters burn up. They also make an upgraded cooler that is supposed to solve this problem.

Im a nissan cvt tech. It’s literally almost the only thing i do and ive done bare minimum 400 cvts across all nissan models and even ATs on nissan trucks. Do not ever do this. This doesnt do anything to your trans good or bad, its your ecm cutting power to your engine, its a failsafe for the car. Instead let me put yall on game for real, certain codes will give away a bad trans, such as P17F0, P17F1, P0776 P0841, those respectively are Cvt Judder, Cvt Judder, Fluid pressure solenoid, fluid pressure solenoid. We have two different judder codes that mean different things but to keep it simple, trans is going out, the two different pressure solenoid codes correspond to the valve body in the cvt, its generally not worth only replacing the valve body due to many different reasons. There are tons of different solenoids and codes corresponding to each of em, i cant remember exactly which is which but you get the idea. The most common symptoms (any of these or a combination of them, point towards but aren’t necessarily a guarantee of your transmission): A delay in power, hesitation, lack of power, high rpms at a low "gear", stalling when switching from D to R, R to D or P to D or R, you get the idea. These are common symptoms but please for the love of god go to a dealer and pay the 150-200 for a genuine diagnosis, CVTs are weird and alot of people dont know about em or misdiagnose em. I would know, i get plenty of messed up installs from smaller shops brought to me to fix the mistakes.

Hello Steve, I hope you're having a good week. I have a question, if you don't mind. The mechanic was testing motor mounts on my car, and he did something a tiny bit similar to the video. He pressed the brakes with his left foot, put the car in drive, then gave the accelerator a small blip to rev to like 2k rpms while watching the engine lift. Did the same thing in reverse. Like a quick blip of the accelerator, not holding it down. Does that damage the transmission or cause it to slip? I have a kia ivt, basically a cvt. Car drove perfectly fine after the test. It's my first car, and I worked hard to afford it, that's why I'm extra careful lol

I know this is a two month old comment, but if you do see this, how can you tell if the transmission needs service in an 05 maxima? I’ve heard they weren’t exactly great.
@ayoitssteve869
6 ай бұрын
@@IntrnetCat the maxima cvts arent bad, relative to our other cvts, generally there isnt really a way to feel if they need service, if you feel something its more than likely too late. Nissan says service them with genuine NS-3 Trans fluid every 60k, but for your sake, do it every 30k. To service them is generally pretty easy, pop the trans drain plug, reinstall it after it drains out, find your dipstick tube for the trans, the cap is gonna be hard to get off because its hard to explain how to get it off, but keep trying, theres a plastic locking tab on the front of the cap, theres a piece of metal it sits in, youll take a small screwdriver or pick and slide it against the back of the metal piece in the slot, then pry towards the tube to release the lock(or just break it by ripping it off, wont really hurt anything)fill it with 5 quarts of ns3(dont use any universal or knockoff stuff)then use a scan tool to see the temperature of the fluid, when it hits 95°F theres gonna be a 14mm drain plug on the bottom, kinda close to the 19mm drain plug, its to the left of then trans pan, pop that and let it drain, wait until the stream breaks and becomes bubbly, put the 14mm back in, if the scan tool can reset the fluid degredation, do it, if not its no big deal. Sounds complicated until ya do it, easier done than said in this case. Common signs of failure are slippage, hesitation, rpm flaring, those are the most common. If you see a P17F0 or P17F1 code(CVT Judder)ya gotta replace it. Same with P0776 or almost any PC Solenoid code. Hopefully this helps, i dont mind answering more questions, you can leave any contact info and ill message ya if ya want.

This is out of the Factory Nissan Service manual. So what he is doing is OK except you do not exceed 5 sec. so he basically made a good CVT into a bad one. 6. While holding down the foot brake, gradually press down the accelerator pedal. 7. Quickly read off the stall speed, and then quickly remove your foot from the accelerator pedal. CAUTION: Do not hold down the accelerator pedal for more than 5 seconds during this test. Stall speed: 2,600 - 3,150 rpm 8. Move the selector lever to the “N” position. 9. Cool down the CVT fluid. CAUTION: Run the engine at idle for at least 1 minute. 10. Repeat steps 6 through 9 with selector lever in “R” position.

Yea don’t do this. I sell used cars and the number one reason these things fail besides poor build quality is lack of maintenance. Number two is how you drive the car. You can’t drive these cars every day in the summer time like a race car. These transmissions build a lot of heat and the little baby trans coolers that Nissan uses on these cars can’t cool it enough to save it. You have to drive like a normal person and try to stay out of stop and go traffic when it’s hot out. I know it’s ridiculous but that’s just how it is with these cars.

This isn't a bad cvt, THIS IS LIMP MODE. There's a number of things that cause this, but this is a safety mechanism to help prevent damage or further damage to the motor and/or transmission by restricting the rpms to 2500. What this man is saying is misleading because something as simple as an air intake or vacuum leak can trigger limp mode. To give him the benefit of a doubt, I think a cvt going out COULD possibly trigger it. Invest in an obd scanner so you can at least check for active or pending codes and from there, consult your mechanic or check/join a forum for your car if you want to DIY it. A couple of main signs of the cvt going bad will be slippage (where the contact point that transfers rotational energy from the motor to the transmission is slipping instead of gripping) and a whining sound that will rise and fall with the rpms (take note, when my car throws a p0101 code the transmission will make the whine when the code is pending or active which could have some correlation with the ecu about to trigger limp mode. Doesn't make the sound when no codes are active or pending.) I have a 2012 maxima and currently battling a p0101 - mass airflow sensor out of performance code and it does this to my car. I've fixed an air leak on the intake hose, replaced pcv valve, and checked the throttle, body which was clean. Most likely will have to take the intake off and check the gasket and some hoses which is going it be a -PAIN- with this motor.

Every idiot in the comments lol, all hes doing is getting up on the converters stall point. Its a stall test, this has been done for years. The car does this in normal operation. Its not "slipping" the transmission its litterally just moving the torque converter.
