Normally I'd give officers the benefit of the doubt as way to often their actions get framed, described suggestively or put out of context. But putting somebody in cuffs whos unarmed (and they can see this with a glance of an eye) and compliant for something that's probably misdemeanor and not a criminal charge (especially none of the higher categories) seems abusive. I don't know the laws on stuff like this in the US, but in Germany that's definitely an abuse of the law of physical force applied by authorities.

I remember seeing that first case on a news site and I just couldn't believe how ridiculous policing has become. You as a citizen can't even help fix a societal problem on your own merit completely legally without some douche being like "no it annoys me to see them there, get the cops down here immediately" _and they oblige._ In the "land of the free." They even spent a significant amount of time in the bodycam video directly trying to pin the cat problem on the ladies fixing the cat problem when the city itself was doing nothing. Also, the time between the mother arriving and being arrested was almost nil. They basically treated her as if she were mindlinked with her daughter and had heard the conversation about trespassing in that spot, when she had no idea what the cops were doing there when she arrived. Man was clearly feeling attacked by this little old lady daring to _show up_ after her daughter made him look foolish as he floundered over his words to explain how cat neuterers caused a cat problem. "Before this gets ugly" bet he felt like a big boy when he said that to the octogenerian.

Back around 2003 I was on a trip to Myrtle Beach with my friends and my friend got arrested for not wearing a seat belt. We were driving down the street in a rented convertible over where they have those rides, in bumper to bumper traffic going about 4 mph, when about nine cops appeared out of nowhere on bikes, foot and several cars, surrounded us and shouted at us with megaphones. They hauled my friend away in handcuffs and we had to wait until about 1am that night to go bail him out, spending a good amount of our cash for the trip to do so. We were from NYC and my friend had this huge Yankees tattoo on his arm and was wearing a wife beater, which the cops probably saw and decided to give us a hard time. It was just an easy way to basically rob us of $500 and ruin our trip. I had a video camera with me too but they threatened to smash it if I turned it on. We also got accosted by police for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, for having open alcohol on the beach, for being a wise-ass when I tried to drink some of it when they were making us pour it all out into the trash-bin, for lighting fireworks, for having glass (soda) bottles on the beach, and for 'trespassing' when we were walking through this garage that ran under this hotel as a shortcut to get to the beach, where they gave us a citation to show up a few days later, I guess at a judge, and when we said that our flight home was tomorrow morning, they made us pay them whatever cash we had on us to let it go. They didn't really like us too much down there and the feeling was mutual.

My boyfriend and I watched this series together. It ended up being a much more "Fuck the Police" experience than we expected. More than half the time the cops are proving themselves tools of oppression for the capitalist system: they are there to make sure you don't damage the property of the rich. The old ladies had every right to be assholes to the cops: this is what happens when you try to engage in your community? What happens when you go outside? The cops show up and tell you that trespassing laws are more important? Lots of the cops also arrest based on no law but their own lack of knowledge. You're not really breaking any law cause they can't charge you, but they'll arrest you and fine you just because they're supposed to make money off the poor.

These things make me wonder if Americans have ever seen a crowded beach before. Like, if you ever been to a beach in Rio de Janeiro on a weekend when the sun is burning hot, you don't have SPACE to be worried about what other people are wearing. You need to dodge 5-10 parasols to get to the water, and remember the way you came so you don't get lost on the way back. The alternative is to set up camp AT THE WATER and hope nothing gets damaged. These guys just seem to have too much space, they need to suffer a little to stop being so annoying.

I popped a tire and had 3 cop cars on me and they assumed i had a gun. Literally only because i popped a tire. However, as an obviously Indigenous man, and with bumper stickers making this even more undeniable, (my Nation's and the Tribes within my Nation - a couple others, and sweetgrass on my dashboard, a known Indigenous tradition) this was blatant racism. Sucks extra that one of the cops was black. I was driving my adopted mom's car, and they never asked me for the proof they would need that i had permission to use the car. They never asked for insurance, anything. So obvious they were itching to start something. Luckily, they finally listened to me that i was an Ubereats driver with an order literally in the passenger seat, and as I'm in Portland, where major backlash against police happened, they're on edge about stupid arrests against BIPOC way more than they were before. And for good reason. Before the BLM protests, and especially because they got so much attention, it would've been even scarier. I realise I'm lucky, and how that could have gone. They cuffed me in the back of the car. For popping a tire. I kept asking if I was being detained and they wouldn't answer. Fuck the police! Not so fun fact: 70% of all Indigenous men in what's now called the us are incarcerated, it's so much because of bullshit like this. I'm so lucky it's not even funny.

Something stuff to look into related to sterilization/spay/neuter: There's different ways to sterilize cats. Gonadectomy (full spay/neuter) is the main one used. It removes the gonads which greatly reduces hormones and changes behaviours. In cats, it reduces fighting and marking among other behaviour. It can reduce some medical issues, but can also increase other medical issues -- in female cats, gonadectomy does increase net lifespan due to high and hard to treat mamamary cancer rates. However, in species where overpopulation isn't driving spay/neuter, it's been connected more clearly connected to anxiety and depression for years in research. It messes up serotonin among other factors. In cats, I can't find any clear studies for either of those issues, particular depression -- but particular for depression, lowered energy has been noted (good meta study on diet for spay/netuered cats/dogs goes over the evidence there). It *has* been connected to anxiety in dogs, but dog studies are conflicting af and have huge confounding biases, particular around socioecomics (owners who are living in poverty are more likely to have intact animals, and there's needs for working/guard dogs [leading to breed /size preferences], vet/training accessibility, medical distrust, and other issues that contribute to increased issues for both health and behaviour due to those factors that aren't being accounted for in many studies ). Poverty/financial struggle does seem to be a huge driver for abandoning/rehoming of animals and sterilization rates. However, for being able to determine the effectiveness of spay/neuter on overpopulation need to account for what is going on in the rest of community, which many studies don't also account for -- the presense of a new shelter may mean that outreach to help low income folk is also happening that doesn't have anything to do with having pets but may help people keep their pets. I believe TNR is likely helping reduce overpopulation and what those ladies were doing is good, but I also believe studies need to be done better, and that TVHR (vastecomy/hysto version of TNR) should be further explored considering modern understandings of how hormones effect mental health issues . As a trans person who noted a new sense of well being/of my mind working better when getting on HRT (not uncommon experience among trans folk) , I'm extremely uncomfortable with changing the hormone profile of a living being without their consent when there's so many open questions about how it's actually effecting them, even in case of cats where it may be increasing lifespan. I also think it's misogynistic and religious baised practice --- based on idea animals, particular female animals, don't actually enjoy sex and wouldn't benefit from non-reproductive sex. the cl*t is not vestigial (see the book b*tch: on the female of the species for a deep dive into the history of misogynisy and religion effecting studying animal sexuality). I also think it's really important for human health for vets and shelters to stop using data that has glaring issues /don't account for contributing factors well. It contributes to medical distrust, which can hurt human health (reducing vaccine rates, reducing use of medical care when accessible). Right now, they're not even taught other type of sterilization methods at most vet schools -- they're obsessed with this being a best option and just... dismiss any issues (or like with pet obesity, blame the owner [gonadectomy increases obesity in many species and is well known issue, which may be partially due to increased hunger... which is a well being issue... but per shelters/vets, it's owners fault for not putting on stricter diets.) (I hyperfocused on this subjet a few months ago and spent way too long looking into it and want to encourage others to look into this messy situation).

Unrelated but when I was little I was OBSESSED with Burger King (im so sorry) and when Spider-Man 3 came out, they had this huge collection of toys. We became friends with one of the workers there, and one day we went to get some food, and she handed us this big bag full of Spidey toys 😭😭 I still have them to this day but will NEVER eat Burger King again 😀 thank you for coming to my TED talk

Cops not backing down when they falsely accuse people of something... pretty standard nowadays sadly. That first and last case were 100% the cops in the wrong, but they couldn't just apologize and move on. Fucking ridiculous.

That's hilarious that the one cop actually had and read out the law, then they seriously tried to double and triple down after realising they had nothing - It was right there in black and white.

8:48 LMAO! I've been saying this exact same thing every time I pass a Burger King. How does this place still exist? I NEVER see anyone in there. Every BK in my area is just a sad concrete box with faded paint and one beat up old Toyota Corolla in the parking lot that I assume belongs to the manager/only employee. How do they keep the lights on?

that first arrest is funny to me because there was an organization where i used to live in florida where they did just that. they trapped cats with food, neutered or spayed them, and re-home or released them in a safer area. 😭😭😭 they're out here arresting old women for helping with the feral cat population that im sure people complain about there, too lmaoooo. there are people committing actual crimes, can y'all please find something better to do 😭😭😭😭

I have been staying with my dad recently due to him having medical issues. The lady a street over just puts food all over the place to feed stray cats. Well, those cats are vile. They would come over to poop in my dads plants, so he covered them up. They were upset about that and started pooping all over the walk way and the car port. It smells like human waste, it’s the fucking worst. When they couldn’t dig in the surrounding dirt in the summer, they did the same thing. Pooped everywhere, I can’t stand those cats

Sorry to hear that. That situation sounds awful. The ladies in this episode weren't just feeding. They were actually doing Trap-Neuter-Release, which is thought to help reduce the population of cats over time. Young, adoptable kittens and friendly older cats are desexed and removed from the colony. Older, feral cats, who are often quite territorial, are desexed and returned. Gradually, with no breeding cats left, the colony should age out of existence. Even if new cats arrive, they are also subject to TNR, so the population shouldn't ever be growing. If you can, it's worth looking into groups that do TNR in your area, especially if you're seeing a lot of kittens in your neighborhood. Strays and outdoor cats can be such a nuisance and have such short, miserable lives. I hope that this helps. ❤

@@TsubataLately I’m all for when people actually Trap-Neuter-Release, I’m not for people just feeding cats and letting them breed out of control. I worked at a bank where a lady did that, sometimes she didn’t catch the females in time before they got pregnant. She would catch the females after a good amount of time after they gave birth to fix them. She would always would catch the babies when they were old enough to find them forever homes. That I’m for.

While a little pricey, Burger Kings in Japan are fucking excellent. They have all sorts of wild, Japan-exclusive burgers that are works of art and delicious (never ate an ugly burger from there, open 'em up and they look as good as the ads). They even seal plastic over the cups for to-go drinks (like bubble tea) so you can't spill it while taking it home. The only problems are the complete lack of a breakfast menu, terrible bbq sauce, BK fries, which I'm not a fan of. But if, for some reason, you want a a really well-made, fast food burger while in you're in Japan, I recommend you find a BK.
