🔥 When Aging Parent Shifts Day to Night Patterns: At Home Care Issues... While the benefit of in-home care with family can be optimal in many ways, it is certainly a taxing time and difficult to adjust a routine to now a "new norm".
Everything can be affected by having around the clock needs from a family member, and especially when this is a NEW scenario for your home - having an understanding and the "help" that would be needed to give you a break is critical to maintaining your own sanity and well-being.
You need to consider the following "issues" as I've found in the first weekend home, and I wish I had been better prepared in some ways. More importantly, I wish that I had better MEDICAL GUIDELINES for those things that are not typical / common knowledge
Sleep Pattern - she has switched from routine to now wanting to sleep most of the day (if even a variety of naps) which then means she is agitated and up most of the night. Knowing that I am still trying to work - not being able to sleep in my "normal" hours is certainly difficult to maintain. One day - maybe I can handle the lack of sleep; but more than that and it is not sustainable.
Anxiety - whether this is just for her own frustration of not being able to do for herself (which would be understandable) or if a result of the new surroundings, the medication, the diagnosis that is new to her - or any other reason or lack of rationale, the ANXIETY is real and finding a way to calm her so that she can have peace and rest is necessary.
Confusion and Talking in Sleep - she has her capacity, she is still sharp as a tack - but I have heard her talking at night, having full blown conversations with "someone" and yet she is sound asleep.
This initially caught me so off guard, I wanted to make sure she was okay, coherent or at least comfortable (but the adage, let sleeping babies sleep filled my mind!) She has no memory of this and while most was not clearly spoken to understand - there were parts she was very loud and you could catch a word here and there. At 2 o'clock in the morning - it is something that will WAKE YOU UP!
15-30 minutes Needs - it's like when you have small children and every time you turn around they need something else, they just ate but now they want a snack, or they don't want to take their nap when they should - instead they wait until just before dinner.... except you are dealing with an ADULT who has more of their own wishes to express, or just the medical needs that require more attention. It is DEMANDING overall and knowing that you need to be on YOUR A-GAME to keep up is helpful.
Oxygen Levels - what to do if the oxygen monitor shows a "low" number - what is a low number?? How much oxygen should you increase / when should you increase it and / or should you decrease it??! I mean these are all the questions that I have now that she is "dependent" upon the oxygen and in my care at home. I have NO IDEA and NO ONE GAVE US ANY INFORMATION ON THIS let alone any "training".
