More weight uses more fuel. The ticket price would pay for a certain amount of fuel they've calculated and allowed for but the extra weight will use extra fuel that then needs to be paid for.

@@JoshPhoenix11 Carry on luggage is a fraction compared to the variance in weights of the passengers. Setting a weight limit for the bag is fine but 0.5 kg each over 200 passengers is 100kg i.e. a big passenger. It's not a huuugggeee deal. Without getting too into the nitty gritty of it; Sure there are fuel calculations with regards to the number of passengers and all the luggage but the calculations are not so razor thin and perfectly accurate for them to adjust the fuel on a per passenger basis, they've got broad tolerances. If they want to charge for the extra fuel consumed from a slightly heavier bag. That's fine, that can be approximated and it's approximately no where f...--ng close to $60 :D

When I see them coming around to weigh carry-on, I just take the jacket out, put it on, and let them weigh the empty carry-on. Also useful when I go uber-cheap and there's no carry-on allowance. It's just me, my small backpack, and a huge fabric shopping bag with my jacket (that I can fold up and tuck inside the jacket if/when checked).

Fun fact, they usually do choose to do the job of weighing of carry on, because Jetstar pay a commission to attendants for each overweight bag they charge, that's why they're so keen. Check in agents at the main desk don't get commission, so they don't care as much. Even if you only have carry on, get them to weigh your bag and tag it before you get to the gate.
@vanessaland5090
Ай бұрын
as an ex fly oz fa, that is incorrect. not sure about commissions for the bag checkers though. main agent's definitely care. Where tf are you getting your information from or are you just pulling it out of your arse to sound smart? People expect to pay $40 fares and then whinge when they don't get full service free everything. It's so those who don't mind can still travel affordably. We really do attract whingers who pay dirt cheap. From what I understand, it's to minimise over 7kg luggage because it's a safety hazard falling on people's heads and for every extra weight everyone caries that's extra fuel burnt and they're not making any money off your ticket already, and it effects weight balance and safety.

there are a number of reasons for this policy. one is that baggage handlers have to carry it if its a checked bag, and while some of the heavier bags are maybe ok while standing, they have to be handled in particularly awkward manners that make it super difficult if the bag is overweight. the second reason is that planes need a generally equal distribution of mass to operate safely. and while one generally heavy bag is not gonna cause a problem, a situation in which anyone can bring a heavy carryon without being stopped will (especially since they rest on the top hemisphere of the plane). heavy bag placement is a reasonably uniform distribution, but like all distributions, it will not always hold, and if even 1/1000 plane rides have a particularly heavy corner from like two families overpacking, that's an issue. it is much better to ensure that even in circumstances where everyone with the heaviest bags all sit in one area, they are never heavy enough to potentially destabilize the aircraft
