The Intriguing Unknown Lost History of when One single Umpire single-handedly Stalled DRS for Half a decade, Galvanising the entire cricket community in standing firm and changing the Course of Cricket forever
It could have been in 2006
A full 3 years before it was actually Debuted that DRS would have been introduced in the world of cricket
In fact in an ICC meeting in July of 2006 both the traditionalists and the reformists had come together to pass through a bill that allowed for its legalisation
and within a month there was a bill to be tabled that would allow its use in the champions trophy that was to be held in India that very year in October
but all such grand plans were to go up in smoke
when within a day after this announcement
Steve Bucknor
the most experienced umpire in the world at the time
would speak out against the DRS
actually accusing them of making the umpires look bad
Shocking wrong replays on purpose
Manipulating the mat and most importantly purposely not allowing key batsmen from home countries to not get out in order to safe guard the commercial interests of broadcasting companies
This shocking allegation came of the back of the fact
That in the past few years
Many new broadcasting companies and producers had started realizing the amount of money that was there to be earned from cricket
And hence had started investing in buying out broadcasting rights with a vengeance
But the new DRS rules meant
That the very same producers whose main interests would be in maximizing their profits would also now have control over the outcome of the match
And in their greed
They would try to make as much money as possible from them
By giving false results
To prolong match, increase advertiser’s revenue and ensuring that the home team wins
And this allegation form buckor
Quickly caught fire
Causing the died down battle between the reformists and traditionalists to once again open up a new front
Now though people like Petter Hutton - the vice president of ten sports would speak up from the of the producers
All such noise was to be quickly drowned out on what was to be an unending non-stop onslaught from the other side
Starting from the voice of cricket Harsha Bhogle - who doubled down on the mat manipulation accusation along with raising a question on the amount of authority that was being handed over to the producers editors and directors
And though most umpires refused to comment on this many took this as silent acknowledgement that there was stuff like this going in the background
As if it was an open secret in cricketing circles
And this assertion was confirmed when even a anonymous broadcaster came out in support of Bucknor
Finally
At this point - ICC had to relent
And the disheartened decided to push back the roll out of DRS wanting to first test it in Domestic circles
But so badly was DRS reputation Maligned by this point
That no board in the world was ready to try it out
And even when they did
It was a full year later by ECB in a domestic tournament that still ended up in complete failure
As of the 11 decisions reviewed
Not one was overturned
The third umpire seemingly too afraid to go against his colleagues
And this seemed to have become the final nail in DRS coffin with even the enthusiasm and drive from the ICC for in seeming to have weakened
But in a turnaround of epic proportions,
The us Tennis open decided to use a version of the hawk eye system in 2007, to tremendous success, giving the ICC the opportunity to use that as an example for a renewed push for the system
Finally getting it approved in 2008
But still even if they could use it in ICC tournaments
All boards around the world were still not agreeable to it
The publicized first attempt in the 2008 England south Africa series ending up in complete failure
Finally needing to have India
The BCCI the worlds richest board at the time
To finally join the fray and agree to hold its first historical trial in the test series against Sri Lanka
But even then
All it created was another heap of controversy
Where all the inadequacies of the system had been laid bare
Making BCCI now stand firmly against it
Making a widespread acceptance of the system
Just a pipe dream.
