One place where I think Film grain really helps is in 2d animation. Especially one that is made on a TV budged. As it helps to give a sense of texture to otherwise really flat looking drawings which I think can often help make them look better. It also helps to coverup some weaker animation.

It really does give a different dreamy feeling. That's at least part of the reason Denis Villeneuve shot Dune with the Arri Alexa LF IMAX and then transferred the digital image to 35 mm film and then scanned the film back to digital.

Something else that needs mentioning is that KZitem seems to not deal with film grain very well. If KZitem is the main platform you plan on showing your video on, then consider a finer grain or no grain at all.

I would add 'Underwater' filming to when not to use film grain...pixelation can be an issue with underwater color/depth loss, and lighting issues. Great point about the banding...I'm going to try it since I sometimes notice it in my color grading, although 10bit has helped a little. Thank you

I'm in post on my first feature film (SURFACE TENSION) and just experimented with a film grain overlay yesterday. It absolutely helped with imperfections like banding and just added a sense of gravitas to the footage. I have a theory that subconsciously (or maybe consciously) we've stored a lot of positive feelings from all the films / including film grain we've consumed and it's this "visual history" that gets triggered. The result may be technical but it's also hugely emotional is my opinion. It just feels right by including this familiar artifact of analog film making. Love it.

Same reasoning for why we usually prefer 24fps content when consuming TV and movies. That's why I always shoot stuff in 24fps. I can't stand the look of smoothing effects or higher framerates when I watch stuff on a newer TV because my eyes/mind are just trained to better enjoy the traditional look.

Depends on the movie. Tbh scifi movies like The Matrix and Tron are the most appropriate to be super digital and grain free because the whole point is that they're digital worlds. Contagion on the other hand, a film about a viral outbreak, doesn't have much organic bite to it because it's so grain-free. Albeit beautiful, such a sterile image undermines the harshness of such a sick world.
