I would say is more of an honest statement. Don't get me wrong, Nolan very clearly cares about how good his films can be, and I definitely see and appreciate the huge effort behind them. However, I genuinely think there are areas in which he can improve considerably, mainly his dialogue, screenwriting, and directing. Again, that's not say he isn't a good (or even great) filmmaker, he is; but I think there are genuine criticisms that can be made of his movies. I will say that what I like most about him is not being afraid of putting his ideas as faithfully as he can on the screen. I haven't seen Oppenheimer, though. I'm really excited to see what he does with it.

People went on and on about Leo never getting an Oscar. Cilian Murphy has never had a nomination and I would consider a far superior actor. He has a much more extensive back catalogue of leading movies than many realize and he never phones it in. Regarding what Nolan says towards the end. I think there was an omission in the movie in not challenging the standard narrative about why the bomb was dropped, but there is stuff in the movie that made up for it. Contrary to the standard narrative, (1) contemporary consensus estimates for US losses in case of an invasion of the Japanese mainland were much lower than the number usually quoted today, (2) the main reason Japan surrendered wasn't the bombs, but the Soviet entry into the war (Japan's leadership held out hope for a separate peace with the Soviets until the end) and US assurances about the Emperor's immunity in spite of the demand for unconditional surrender, (3) the main reason the bombs were dropped on cities instead of the alternatives seems to have been President Truman's desire to appear as a strong & decisive leader stepping out of Roosevelt's shadow. Now what saved it for me was Gary Oldman's portrayal of Truman. Even without the historical details being shown, one could imagine that the decision to drop the bomb was made by a very flawed man.

Sorry, a bit of a side track about the recent Hollywood strike. I had an experience with Motion Capture and voice acting and have to say even though gaming industry is a colossus these days, voice over actors and mo cap performers are not fully considered 'equal' talent as traditional actors. What's really interesting right now is that the mainstream, 'regular' actors demand royalties for their digital likeness when it's used on new projects they are not technically involved with. Something MoCap actors could relate to...I guess the movie studios figured that their 'creative accounting' and sometimes cruel contracts/ NDA's would go unnoticed into this new era of streaming. They were wrong, preparation is everything and they were completely ill prepared for this new platform of entertainment. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in the new Resident Evil games :)
