I warm the replacement headguard and grommets in a pot of hot water, which I find is a more controlled way to heat up the plastic than a heat gun. Obviously the fire should be turned off!

awl (n.) "pointed instrument for piercing small holes in leather, wood, etc.," Old English æl "awl, piercer," from Proto-Germanic *ælo (source also of Old Norse alr, Dutch aal, Middle Low German al, Old High German äla, German Ahle), which is of uncertain origin. Earliest references are to piercing of the ears, though later it was the characteristic tool of a shoemaker

I string for myself (with lots of help from Harry’s videos) and replace headguards myself. I can 100% attest to the Lear I g curve and jacking a bunch up before coming upon a technique that works for me. I probably spent $50 in headguards before I got it correct and haven’t jacked one up again. Note, the plastic of the headguards isn’t rock solid, it can be ruined when putting it through grommet holes. If you hang up the grommet on the side of a grommet hole in the frame while pushing the grommet into the frame, it will ruin your grommet and headguard. The awl, patience and being very careful are your friends. Don’t hurry doing it.

When you put in the long side pieces (on those babolats) make sure you have the larger grommets that correspond to the actual tie off holes. They look like they are reversible but one end has a larger grommet. If you can not find grommet strips head tape works.

Hi Harry, I have a question, besides preventing scrapes and scratches is there a specific reason for the headguard? Does it help balance the racket head or help dampening vibs because I'm thinking of totally removing mine on my next string change to make my racket head a tad bit lighter. TIA.
@Jonathanoller
3 жыл бұрын
It also protects the strings! I wouldn’t remove it if I were you. Imagine scraping the strings on the court - you’ll be changing your strings a whole lot!

@@Jonathanoller scraping strings on the court is something I don't do. I have smashed my racket on the court before, sadly, I don't think any headguard could help that 😂.

I've done a lot of those three past 2 years on different brands, about 11 (head, Wilson, yonex, dunlop) and i actually think it is easy enough to do. You only need 1 of those ice pick tool, nothing else. I don't heat the tubing sets, not needed and you have a risk deforming the plastic. Didn't mess any of them up.

Any bag which carries racquets at an angle should be avoided as it's likely to hit people in the head. They're dangerous.
