Developed myoclonus suddenly at age 47. No explanation found. Had them very severely for about 10 days in a row (was hospitalized) and since then it's only once every few months for a few hours. Seems like it's at times triggered by stress. I also find that it can get temporarily triggered by looking at videos of people who have myoclonic jerks. It's all just a mystery to me. Thanks for putting your videos up, you're very articulate about what is going on with you. Good luck.

Andrew East wait so it’s normal to stutter and feel your jaw moving when you have myoclonic jerks? it used to happen so many times like whenever i’d get excited when i’m typing my fingers would jerk or when i’m talking my mouth would stutter and i always wondered why.

Thanks for sharing; it's scary for those who don't know what it is. Mine started over 25 years ago and went undiagnosed by some of the (then) best neurologists available. Fast forward two decades, I'm controlling my "jitters" (as my family called them) by taking a nap for at least 20 minutes after the first one hits. The triggers are always the same: lack of sleep coupled with high-stress and/or a head cold, almost always occurring within 90 minutes of waking up. I was finally persuaded to see another neurologist after one particularly bad attack that caused me to fall (mine were severe and I'd stumble, fall backwards, etc) where I managed to break my knee and another where I accidentally dropped my son who was only 7 weeks old at the time (he was injured but recovered fully). One sleep-deprived EEG later and the doctor diagnosed me, put me on levetiracetam (yes, it's not a fun drug but it WORKS) and I haven't had a myoclonic episiode in over 2 years.

I applaud you for being brave enough to show the world what most not only don’t understand, but have no idea what you go through. I started out having partial complex seizures as a kid and developed into Grand mal seizures when I was a young teen. Then, I also developed myochlonic jerks in my late twenties. I’m nownkn my early thirties and have only been experiencing myochlonic jerks for the past few years. Mine are also brought on by lack of sleep and/or stress. I was really embarrassed by them and worried that my license and job would be taken from me. It took a while before I finally saw my doctor about it. And even still, I get embarrassed by them because people stare at you wondering what’s going to happen. They have hard times following conversations because my sentences are so broken up from the jerks and tying to pick up where I left off from before a jerk seems to be quite hard. I sympathize what you go through and am glad someone is out there to show others that they are not that abnormal and that others go through and feel what they are going through and feel too.

Same thing has been happening to me for the past three years now. It's gotten worse with antidepressants, which I am on now. I have had MRIs, CAT scans, X-rays, and every other test done and the doctors keep saying that they can't find anything. I was getting tests done for a urological condition and I suggested that it may be neurogenic. But so far the doctors have been refusing to let me see a neurologist for examination. I'm sure there is some underlying reason for why my health has been declining so quickly over the past three years. I was fine and all of a sudden I end up with so many problems? Now I can't even speak because when I do I end up with a random tongue jerking/spasm that stops train of thoughts well. I know Sertraline has that as a side effect but it was already there before starting it, now it's just worse.

Hi. I have myoclonic sleeping disorder. The jerks can range from slight nods, to total body jerks that nearly throw me out of bed. I can have just a few before I get to sleep, or they can go on the entire night and I get no sleep. Had it for years now. It happens right at that point I'm about to fall asleep. I've noticed lately just before each jerk happens, I see a totally random, picture/scene/place, mostly move, but some are still. It's so bizarre. So totally frustrating and annoying the longer it continues in a night. I read somewhere a long time ago, it can be bought on by anxiety, stress, depression, ABI or spinal nerve damage....which I have all of those. So it's like one of those ads on TV.."but wait, there's more" "get all these things and we'll throw in Myoclonic sleeping disorder aswell! " I did catch it happening on video a couple of yrs ago" Because after watching every you tube one I found at the time, I thought..wow...mine is way more than those. What I saw was more like twitches comparably to the way I get jolted. I also have chronic lower backpain , so the severe jolts are usually followed by severe pain in my back. I didn't put it up on you tube. It was too long, i didn't have editing equipment, and wasn't /still not flash at how to do that. it's lost now, because it was on my last phone that died. Could do another one I guess, but really couldn't be bothered, Just thought Ide comment here, so others know theyre not the only ones. When I first started to get it, I know I was thinking what the hell is going on...what is this. Yay for google and KZitem. :-)

+tathakadabuda& I smell Fresh Cash Hey guys. I've had this for about two months now. At first didn't know what hell was going on. Then I did some research on the web and came across various articles on Hypnotic Jerks, and I was like YEP! That's what I'm experiencing. Well, luckily for me I've had success in getting them under control. I went to my chiropractor because of pain in my upper back that I got from doing strenuous exercise at the gym. He theorized that this is what may be causing the twitches. I've been going every other week now for adjustments and it seems to working. I'm convinced that this is a nervous system disorder. Anyway, I've hardly had any jerks for about a week now! - Been sleeping like a baby. THANK CHRIST! - I just hope it continues. I think it will. Another thing that I've found VERY useful. And has to do with what you said 'tathakadabuda' about anxiety. I read that the more you worry about getting these jerks the worse it will get. Which makes sense because in the beginning I used to worry a lot about this shit, - and I would keep getting them. Once I read that worrying only makes it worse, I decided to keep the worrying down to a minimum. And you know something? It works! Give that strategy a try. Maybe it will work for you, maybe not. Everyone's different. Give it a shot. I've even developed a sense of humor about it, and have my own personal list of favorite comedies that deal with people not being able to sleep at night that I find very therapeutic to watch. LAUGHING is good medicine. Let me know if you guys would like to know the names of the episodes from the sitcoms. Hope I've passed along some good tips. - Hang in there!

Can that fan up there be a cause of seizures I wonder (either personally or in general) because of the flickering light being caused by the rotating blades or is it an entirely different kind of flashing that doesn't bother people? I've heard some people say that (for some reason) everytime they go into Walmart they have one. I've often wondered about these school buses I've seen (Wisconsin, USA) that now have that flashing light on top or how a police car or ambulance or fire truck light would affect people who have them due to lights.

Thanks for sharing with us. I wish I could have been able to share with other people like this when I was younger. Small note, I don't know if flashing lights make you have seizures at all, but the light behind you with the fan going around and around, causes a flashing type effect that could possibly cause a seizure. Good luck on your journey.. Take care.

Thank you for sharing your videos! I'm in nursing school trying to learn about all the different kinds of seizures and this really helps me to know what to expect if I encounter someone with myoclonic seizures. Can I ask, though, what do you feel during these jerks? When you stop talking is it because you forget what your talking about, like thought blocking? Does it hurt? Or cause your head to hurt?
@jubolly
10 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelsey, I would describe it as a temporary pause in thought. Like you can't continue a sentence and you're peaced out, but then you pick back up again. Sometimes you start repeating yourself because you just can't put together the words - you know you're talking, but at the same time you know you're not coming across coherently. It doesn't hurt at all - the only instance for which I can imagine anything would hurt is if you're having a tonic clonic and you fall to the floor or on an object.

I keep trying to figure out what's been going on with my speech recently. By a description it sounded like it could be, but watching yours I see that for you it seems like speech suddenly stops or you trail off on a vowel, and mine isn't like that so I'm not sure. I know they can work differently though, so what I was wondering is if you by any chance know if a myoclonic jerk can cause your speech to become suddenly garbled before it stops. I can't seem to figure out what triggers it either because it seems like it happens at sort of random times. When it first happened I was scared that I might have had some sort of mini stroke, and I still sort of am, but I'm trying to look at other possibilities too. Years ago for a while I was having a problem with my foot too where I would be walking and all of a sudden the muscles on the front of my ankle seemed like they would just stop working and the front of my foot would drop. My biggest worry in a way is that it's some kind of progressive condition where my muscles will always have the potential to suddenly malfunction. What do you think?

Im very interested neuroscience, so I love learning about epilepsy and stuff, it fascinates me. I always thought myoclonic jerks were like "oh hey my arm is jerking look at it go" but its really obvious that you completely shut down / lose consciousness for a second or so each time. Are you aware that you lose consciousness sometimes and don't even know its happening?

I'm nearly 35 years old, and I've just found out that my myoclonic seizures are a result of breakdown caused by a lifetime of not treating the MTHFR A1298C gene mutation I did not know I had. The mutation causes an inability to methylate B vitamins, which starts a chain reaction affecting a LOT of chemical processes in the body, including many in the brain. If you have not been tested you might want to.

hi i am new to the channel i zoomed in on the videoand the entier time she is talking her pupils are dilated through out the video. just a comment i am not a nurse or doctor in fact i also have a seizure disorder this is my story. When I was a baby I had a febrile seizure I stopped breathing and turned blue my mom gave me mouth to mouth and by the time the EMTS arrived I stopped seizing. in pre k I would get angry and punch any thing that was in front of me that is when it was suggested that my parents should take me to a therapist. he took one look at me and said that I was having seizures he then referred me to a neurologist. At the at the age of 5, I was diagnosed with childhood absence epilepsy but I have been seizure free since the age of thirteen. And so was taken of meds which caused massive weight gain a hand tremor and memory loss. The point is meds are good up until a point and then it becomes a pill, no pun intended. My triggers are flashing lights, the transition from the out doors to inside a classroom getting too hot and recently sleep deprivation. when i have an absent my pupils will go from normal to pin point that is the only physical sign the eye can lasts My seizures last one second and happened every minute to every minute and a half. So there are 60 seconds in a minute and 24 hours in a day then I was having seizures every 1440 minutes or 86400 seconds so in total I would have 86400 seizures per day with meds. my parents were told to treat me as a normal child and to see how far I would develop and look at me now I have graduated high school with honors . I am in collage as you can infer I was not expected to do much of what I just mentioned The effects of my seizures is that I have Aspie like tendencies due to my epilepsy which I know is difficult to understand to put it in simple terms as a result of my seizures my brain compensated and rewired itself and so I have all of the symptoms of Aspergers but lack any sort of understanding math as a result I have no understanding of money and never really learned my basic math facts.(I am just learning them now in college which for most Aspergers people they are gifted with math abilities ) I also have orthotic issues due to my seizures I also have a processing disorder. I have low gross motor control and other motor issues as well. After my father died, it seems I have had a relapse if that is possible. I still have my absence seizure but it is not enough to put me on meds . I take omega 3 cod liver oil liquid form as I cannot swallow pills this helps decrease the too small to medicate seizures I have very small seizures that show up on the EEG as misfired neurons and the Dr. called them "flurries" so here is what my flurries are typically like I will become very spacey I can not interact with my surroundings I also felt locked in to place. I am completely aware my vision becomes like a tunnel and thing start to move or vibrate on their own an absent seizure lasts 1 second but these flurries can last 5-10 minutes.
