Paul wrote this song when he was 15 years old! His dad played piano & trumpet & trombone. They used session musicians for the clarinets on this song. Their brilliant producer, George Martin did the arrangement. Great, fun song.

And in case you don't know, it's Paul McCartney singing the lead.....the same Beatle that sang lead on "Helter Skelter" He was able to change the sound of his voice to whatever he was singing. Listen to "Yesterday," "Here There and Everywhere," "I Will," "Mother Nature's Son," and others where he sings with his higher, sweet vocals. Yet he could be singing like he did on Helter Skelter and "Back in the USSR"

You should have also played his "HONEY PIE" which Paul also wrote and sang in the same "era" as "WHEN I'M ''64" Actually "HONEY PIE" really sounds like the '20s. PAUL'S FATHER JIM played the trumpet and piano and had his own Jazz Band back in the '20s/'30s called "JIM MAC'S JAZZ BAND" Look on line And you can find a diagram of WHO all the people on the SGT PEPPER COVER.

The idea for SP'sLHCB cover was that they were tired of being "The Beatles" and they adopted the persona of SP's band. It is the funeral of the "Fab 4" and the rebirth/freeing of the band. The opening line of their previous LP was "Let me tell you how it will be...." as they were becoming a studio band and yes, they could do anything they wanted. They were the undisputed leaders, they were setting the bar for everyone else to reach. Over 50 years later and not too many have even come close (IMHO). In 1964 they held 5 out of the Top 10 as well as 14 songs overall in the Top 100 on the US charts. You should look up the list of people in the crowd behind them. They chose the people to be represented as they were all cultural "heroes" of theirs. A year later Frank Zappa parodied the LP cover with his LP "We're Only In It For The Money". That is an LP you need to listen to all the way through since like SP'sLHCB all the songs run into each other without a break. Carry On!!

That's correct. Paul started learning trumpet at school. I went to the same school as him and George, 16 years later. I too started learning trumpet at school. The school had only two trumpets, and I played both of them at different times.

The Beatles were involved with the cover. His dad led a jazz band in his youth but gave it up when he became a father. Paul was very close with his dad who raised him as a single parent from the age of 14. His dad loved music and had a photo of his band gathered around a large drum. He was often talk about it and music to his sons. He even wrote a song. Paul around the age of 14 wrote the main part of 64, so it's one of his earliest and inspired more by his upbringing than Rock and Roll, which wasn't so popular yet. In the 60s John helped him figure out some of the words and complete it. The album cover is definitely a nod to his Dad. Along with the Beatles pushing back against their media portrayals , adopting a guise of a different band.

I believe Paul’s father played trumpet as well as piano. Paul’s first instrument was a trumpet, given to him by his father. He took it back to the music store and traded it for a guitar.

If you've ever seen the film Tombstone the voice over at the very end says: "Tom Mix wept." The guy in the big cowboy hat just to the right of Brando is Tom Mix. He was the first prolific US "Western" film star.

Sounds like the 50s because Paul write the melody when he was about 15 so around 1956/7. And he’s stated it’s a vaudeville song so yeah 20s. And yes they were the first professional band to be given complete creative freedom. This album took months to record, because they were given unlimited time. Helps when you quit touring.

Fits in with the Music Hall concept of Sgt Peppers. Within the context of the album, it makes sense and fits perfectly. That said, as a stand alone tune, it’s still very good.

In British terms this would be music hall or variety. The jazzy style is reminiscent of the 20s, though the origins of music hall go back to around 1850. The old time origins are similar to Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite on the same album.
