Perfect timing! This is where I am right now....a former Lutheran decamped from ELCA, at an Anabaptist church simply because they do not ordain women or gays, and am so homesick for the pure Gospel and the Sacraments. They put more emphasis on what one should wear, what color of vehicle, clothing, shoes one wears, how to comb one's hair, and trashes the Sacraments as an afterthought. The ministry is not trained at all and many have not gone past eighth grade. Seriously. I just want to go home to a church the teaches and preaches the pure Gospel instead of man-made standards held in higher regard than God's Word.

Come to a good LCMS church, a church where the pastor is perfectly based on the law/gospel distinction and the sacraments for you.

@@jordantsak7683 I would if there was one close by. My hubby is not a believer and thinks any church should suffice. That makes things difficult. There had been a LCMS outreach fairly local some years ago but there was no advertising about it. I found that they had closed up and left before I had a chance to call. Church plants/outreaches really need to advertise! We are in heavy ELCA territory.

I have been needing this. Been convinced of more correct doctrine for a while now, but don't want to cause division. God is using this to minister to me!

I truly understand this & it’s a tough place to be in. I salute your desire to not cause division! … one thing that helped me was realizing, I have to Shepard my soul too.

I’ve left one church in my whole life. It is an off-chute of the Protes’tant Lutheran conference. There’s so many things that I could go into why we (my family and I) left. But I will just say that to your point about is the place you’re going to helping you to know that God is for you or not. That became the deciding factor. The pastors inner thoughts/ commentary on the interpretation of scripture became the message and the focus of the sermon. This often got away from the actual message of the Gospel. I would enter feeling guilt and the attack of Satan and leave feeling no different. This over time became an added guilt laid upon me as though I were the problem. But after 19 years of going through that (not consistently), I realized that the overly pietistic lifestyle and message was what was condemning me. I had lost sight of the fact that Christ died for sinners like me who struggled with sin, and struggled with it more because I didn’t feel forgiveness and knowing my sins were forgiven. It was always forgiveness plus your really good obedience in relation to comparing ourselves with surrounding church’s and Christian’s (so-called). This creates a sense of pride and superiority that was always lurking in the way they constantly would talk about the Lutheran church’s in general as apostate. Or point out their faults as if they didn’t have their own. And I was too u comfortable with that since I knew my own heart. Other things contributed to our leaving and joining a confessional Lutheran church. And through that move I have found that the Lord loves me even though I am a sinner who struggles with sin and my thoughts aren’t condemning me since I’ve confessed them and he gives me absolution. This gives me the power to say no to my sins and the law also used as a tool to help me turn to Christ instead of negative preaching only about the law of God. It’s difficult to write down but that’s some of my experience in leaving a church.

This has been weighing on my heart recently. We do love the people at our current church, and have family also going there, definitely don’t want to cause a big hullabaloo, but still praying about how and when to leave.

@@David.1517 We started attending the LCMS church in July after my husband and I completed the catechism class with our local LCMS pastor. Our kids all took it well, and my husband’s family didn’t make a big fuss over it either, though they were sad that we left. My kids are still attending the youth activities at the Baptist church so we didn’t completely abandon our friends there, I think that helped.

What 'barnacles' are you thinking of when you address the topic of the Catholic church? Honestly curious, as i have heard a lot of very gospel filled homilies on Catholic KZitem channels.

I'm sure it's heartbreaking to leave a congregation. Each congregation is theoretically spreading the Gospel of Jesus. If one stays and supports a pastor and congregation that is not spreading the true Gospel then it's possible those teachings lead people not to Jesus but eventually away from Jesus. Jesus himself warned against hindering a child from coming to him. (we are all children in the faith no matter our age). So for me, I think it is an important issue of Stewardship to only support ministries that teach what the bible teaches. People who hold themselves out as Pastors who teach false doctrine will have a lot to answer for....especially if they knew they were teaching false doctrine but continued to do so because they were "in the system" for a long time.
