When is the best time for epidural ? Is it ever too late to get an epidural in labour?
While there is no ‘optimal’ time for getting an epidural, because it depends on many circumstances of birth, you may worry about being told it is ‘too late’.
There are a few factors that can affect whether an epidural can be safely administered during labor, including:
1. The stage of labor: Epidurals are generally most effective when administered during active labor, which is typically defined as when the cervix is dilated to 4-6 centimeters or more. However, if a woman is experiencing intense pain or has a medical condition that may make it difficult to tolerate the procedure, an epidural may be administered earlier.
2. The position of the baby: If the baby’s head is too low in the birth canal, an epidural may not be able to be administered safely and it also may not be effective. This is why if you are fully dilated and the head is low you may be encouraged to push rather than having an epidural first.
3. Medical conditions: people with certain medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders or low platelet counts, may not be able to receive an epidural safely.
4. Availability of an anesthesiologist: In some cases, it may not be possible to administer an epidural if there is no anesthesiologist available to perform the procedure.
In general, it is best to discuss pain management options with your healthcare provider early in your pregnancy and during your prenatal care, so that you can make an informed decision about whether an epidural is right for you, and be aware of any potential limitations or risks.
