I start grafting in late March and continue into all of April and have had success here in the cooler 831 Northern Central Coast. I use white paper bags as hoods to cover the scions the ones left unprotected failed and I will reattempt to graft in the Fall. Thanks for sharing ✌️🥑

It's early August here in Jamaica and I start seeing flowers at the end of December. My pears are ready to pick even though I lost half of them to Hurricane Beryl last month. Thankfully no tree damage.

My tree is beginning to flush so I'm going to try grafting and attempt to propagate roots from stems and see what happens.

I live in San Diego and have tried grafting avocado trees many times. Always in January because that is when budwood is available from OC CRFG scion exchange. The failure rate was 100% though. Seemed like the wrong time to graft when avocado trees were still semi-dormant. I tried grafting in May this year and the graft was successful. The problem is I don't have access to budwood in spring.

Hi Jeff, I love all of your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom on growing tropical fruit trees in the Central Valley. I live in Stockton ca and I’m trying my best to grow tropical fruit trees in my backyard. I have a five year old Mexicola avocado tree. It is 12 feet tall, very healthy and full of blossoms just like last year. But no fruit set from last year. The flowers are dropping again this year. There are a ton of flowers again this Spring. But 50% of the flowers are on the ground. What is happening? Why no fruit set. Please give me some advice! Should I prune the tree down to 6 feet tall? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hard to say without seeing the tree, sometimes they take serval years to establish well enough to set fruit. My first Avocado tree took 8 years and was 15 ft tall b4 it fruited. If otherwise healthy it will drop 99 percent of the flowers and yet still set fruit, Resist any efforts to “Over Fertilize “ as Avocados can react negatively to too much fertilizer. Maybe this or the next year will be the year it will set fruit.?

Have you tried growing any West Indian avocados? They say they’re to cold sensitive for California but so are mangos and guavas and they thrive here
@TropicalGardenGuy

No, but I have experimented with West Indian seeds. They grow huge and very fast. Unfortunately not very cold hardy . Best to use Mexican varieties for rootstock.

Just talked to Gary Matsuoka from Laguna Hills Nursery about 2 weeks ago. I told him that I want to graft a Reed budwood onto my GEM tree, he told me I should wait for mid April to May, we are in SoCal so it may be different here to where you live in NorthCal. Now, I got to find someone that would let me buy or gift a reed budwood. What is your opinion on the best time to graft a citrius tree?
@TropicalGardenGuy

Best times depends on your growing conditions, I like to graft from now through may.

I agree for central valley of CA late Feb is good to start and if tree in a pot bring inside at night if outside temps close to 32, for in ground trees put a paper bag over graft on any 32 nights use rubber band to keep on bag,and by starting late Feb is good also because winter rains will keep humity up for graft. Not sure I would graft past April getting close to high temps before graft takes well. Or shading graft will be needed.

Some types graft more readily than others bacon, black Johnson,and monster graft well , Gem seems to take less often and slower growing graft if takes.

For thoses that cant cut free hand easy there is a grafting tool that works great for 1/2 thick on down for scion thickness and much faster if grafting high numbers.

Good afternoon teacher! What is the important of grafting fruits trees??
@TropicalGardenGuy
5 ай бұрын
Many trees, like Avocados do not come true to seed. Meaning the fruit wont be like the parent trees. So when you graft, you are taking wood from a tree that you like the fruit and put it ion the the seedling which is essentially cloning the tree that you like.

@@TropicalGardenGuy Yes indeed. My London avocado tree’s scion grafts I did in September worked well as I’ve just made it in time before it got too cold.
@MasterKenfucius

That's incorrect. The best time to graft an avocado tree is when the buds are swollen, PERIOD. I just grafted over 50 of them in December with temperatures in the 50's, right before flowering, and I already have half of them pushing growth. Grafting in the winter just takes a little longer for the buds to push out. It makes ZERO DIFFERENCE if it is flowering or if it's leaf growth. The mission of grafting is about FUSING THE SCION. Who cares if they flower right after? The flowers will fall off and the leaves will show up. That's still a success.
@TropicalGardenGuy

Not sure of your location but In my Northern California yard it is correct. If I were to graft in December and the freshly grafted trees were subjected to our normal lowest dec temps, the grafts would freeze. I have grafted when the buds were swelling in November, most didn’t survive. This year was abnormally warm and we didn’t see freezing temps so your way would’ve worked but we only see freeze free winters very rarely. Happy Growing!🌴😎🌴

@@TropicalGardenGuy It is up to the grafter to protect his grafts. That's not the point. The point is that there is nothing wrong with grafting in December. Grafting in temperatures that are too hot is the same... need to protect the grafts.

You are right bro. I do it also in december. And flower buds are fine for grafting. Makes no difference.
@MasterKenfucius

@@bradspaugh9827 Right. A growth push is all that is required to improve the chances of getting a graft to take. There are people out there who even argue that you don't even need that, and they might be correct on that one too, it may just take a little longer to swell the buds and push them out.
