LOL I remember being invited to a German classmate's birthday party. The party started the night before his actual birthday, and since we came from all sorts of cultures (an international school in Europe), you could see him standing at the door, greeting everyone as they arrived while telling the non-Germans to shut it with the wishes because it's not his birthday yet. That was definitely stricter than a bouncer in front of a club.

In my country it’s at least for primary school students, we bring small giftbags (usually a some small packets of snacks and candies) for our classmates, favourite teachers and other friends who are not in the same homeroom class. The richer kids will bring their birthday cakes to cut it after lessons. I never did it though, cuz when i asked my mom why cant we prepare these gifts for them, she said ‘it’s your birthday, why should you be giving gifts when you should be receiving them?” 😂 I thought it was embarrassing not to do it as a kid, cuz everyone else was doing it, but now that i’m older… i totally agree with my mom. 😂

School is different. You can't expect the teacher/school to pay for all those kids. This is a case when your parents are expected to deliver the goods for the class. In high school, it's up to your friends to do this for you, but usually, they'll just take you out because no one has the same classes and all that jazz. Your family will do something separate. As an adult, it's family, friends, and coworkers If you're close to them. But generally, people call in sick or arrange to take a holiday/PTO day on their b-day to do whatever Except be at work. If you have a close department, there is sometimes cake or a small party before you vanish for your b-day or birthday weekend

@tmar8959 since in my friend group, everyone wanted to give group presents but noone organised them so I was always the Idiot who had to come up with something and then it was a hassle to collect the money, I just refused group presents at some point and said we should all just collectively pay the birthday person's dinner. But nobody really was for it... I think it's nice, if you go out with friends for your bday and get invited. I'd say the general rule is this: everyone pays for themselves but if we are out longer and have a few drinks, usually people will take a drink from the bday person on their bill at the end. And say "hey, I paid for a beer, just so you know". The only exception is if a friend throws a big party. Like, really booked a restaurant room and such. Then they will let you know on the invite like "hey, come to my party, beer and wine is on me, anything else is paid separately" or something. My last friend who did this (more like his mum) even paid for food but everyone was surprised because it was like a 60 ppl group... That's not the norm.

The deal is really simple: If you bring cake, you get birthday wishes. If you don't, you don't. There's nothing wrong with bringing the cake to work the next time you're there if you're absent for the actual date (it's heavily encouraged); if you delay any more things get awkward and you should apologize (twice: once on the day where you were supposed to bring cake, and then again when you bring the delayed cake).

If you are invited, you expect to be treated. If you closely know people, you will ask what to bring. They may say something non-commital, like dessert will be fine, but more probably the answer will be nothing is needed. Then you will bring alcohol. You have to be really close to be requested something substantial. If you are not close to people that have invited you, you bring alcohol. And flowers for lady of the house. Think of it as an equal exchange. The birthday person gets gifts, so in exchange the guests should eat for free. The alternative is to communicate with the guests in advance, so that everyone pays for their own food. You'll probably still get presents, but nobody will feel obligated this way.

Idunno, free food is a pretty good incentive for me to show up to a birthday party! And if everybody pays for their own birthday cake/dinner, you still end up getting a lot of free cakes and dinners. Just not on your own birthday.

Well, its always the way how you look at it:) I like it the way you explain and would also like it that somebody invites me (which is also happening over here). But being a german I can say that we see it as an honour to invite people to our birthday. The one thing I love most at my birthday is to host my friends:-) to cook a lovely dish and to prepare a yummie selfmade cake. When I would be invited to a birthday party in Germany and had to pay my food by my own I would wonder what I actually got “invited” for:-D and to be honest: I would feel embarrassed.

As Russians we behave the same way as Germans😅 Cake or pizza (or just any food) is what you bring to office when it’s your birthday. And it’s a bad sign to celebrate birthday early

This is pretty common in Denmark as well. The person who’s birthday it is is the one to bring the goodies. But here there is no pressure. You aren’t required to do so if you don’t want to, but don’t expect other people to show up at work with a birthday cake for you. It’s considered bad luck here as well to wish someone happy birthday in advance of the actual day, while it’s okay to give some one a belated birthday greeting. In Greenland, we talk about someone smelling or they are smelly if you know it’s their birthday the next day…😂

In Italy we bring cake and pastries for our birthday and Prosecco or Champagne (for me, the latter). It’s the norm. And it’s bad luck to wish someone happy birthday the day before.

in America, one often is expected to supply their own birthday cake to bring to work, but we are usually not too superstitious about wishing someone Happy Birthday ahead of time...but there are some German communities around the midwest where they might.

You bring the cake so your colleagues are your guests at the work place for your birthday. You never congratulate before because you could have a car crash before and never get to the actual birthday aaaand you get to be the younger age for a couple of days longer 😂😂😂 It's just logic!

Actually, at my husband's current workplace here in Germany (small company) the boss always commissions birthday cake from a bakery whenever it's an employees birthday! Some still bring something homemade like cupcakes to pass around on their birthdays in addition, though.

As a Latin American I went brought the same surprise while living in Spain , you also bring something to share for your birthday 😂. Afterwards I’d bring cookies or stuff to share and people would ask me if it was my birthday and I’d be like “wtf, no, I’m just sharing cookies”. I like it better in America THE CONTINENT) you get spoiled in your birthday.

In Kazakhstan it is also bad luck to wish Happy birthday before the actual birthday. The birthday person should bring cake and pizzas, or any other treats and he/she will receive a gift from colleagues.

It is the same in Italy! At work a girl brought her own birthday cake and I just thought it was bc people at the office were cheap 🤣 another time we took out a friend for her birthday and she insisted she paid for everyone because it was her birthday. For me it was strange because in my culture (South America) people get treated for their birthday, the friends invite you to dinner, people at the office bring the cake. Ah, and my italian bf is also very superstitious with saying happy birthday before the day 🤣 I never understood why but I'm seeing perhaps it's a European thing. Great content!

In Argentina you'd get the same reaction-but in a more south American fashion- if you wished someone a happy birthday before their actual birthday. Bringing your own cake is also common 🤷🏻♀️ but we are effusive at wishing for ehatever celebrations or celebreta In general, so an opportunity to be happy? We're all in lol

What is there not to understand about these simple rules? Ok, if you can't or don't want to bake, you can also buy good cake and bring it with you, which is also an accepted solution. That`s just only a simple rule easy to accept and implement. Other countries, different customs, It's that simple, and is accepted without any problem when visiting other countries. Only in Germany is this always seen as a drama by non-Germans.
