I once had an encounter with John Tenta when I was about 17. I was shopping with my mom at Guildford Mall in Surrey one day and she was talking with this odd fellow and he got to talking about this encounter he had with Tenta who right around the time his Canadian Earthquake gimmick was in duration. So the fellow comes up to me and tells me how huge this guy was and he saw him in the electronics dept in the London Drugs. So I go with him inside store and there I was looking in awe at the largest man that I've ever seen in my life. I havent reached my full height yet(I was 5'8" and 170 lbs at the time) and I certainly was dwarfed by him. He was looking at cameras being assisted by a salesperson with his wife who was quite petite compared to him. Simultaneously, I was astounded to learn that Surrey, BC was his hometown that day.

It's great to see the real John Tenta, as opposed to the reviled Earthquake. Back in '91, I was at a TV taping in Portland, Maine. What we didn't know that night is that the Natural Disasters turned face and won the tag titles four days earlier at another taping. This title change hadn't aired yet, so we all thought Money Inc still had the belts. At our taping, Jimmy Hart did an interview with Gene Okerlund early in the night about DiBiase & IRS losing the tag titles. They didn't say who won, so we all looked at each other trying to figure what babyface team would be the new champs. Later that night, there were two jobbers in the ring for another squash match. The Natural Disasters' music hit, and Earthquake & Typhoon came out with huge smiles and belts held high. It was the first time we saw Quake smile. The place erupted! Looking back, I've realized that Tenta's smile was genuine, and he finally got some well-deserved crowd love. God speed, big man.
