meanwhile in the netherlands: company that refused to pay people for setting up their work 10 minutes before work time without paying them got sued. Lost the lawsuit and now has to pay millions off salary backwards. Btw this was a phone calling company that demanded their staff members to have their work system and phones booted up before starting. But with the slow systems they had that took around 10 minutes to do and they claimed that the workers should do that in their own time because its normal for workers to be ready to start working the moment their shift begins. And the judge was like: yes but starting up the system is work and its not their fault you guys decided to not spent money on a newer, quicker system. Thats on you.

The difference between cultures. I give myself 20-30 minutes extra time and always arrive early for work. Then play videogames, watch youtube, or take a nap till my shift starts. I don't clock in or work at all till the shift starts, but still get there very early. For me it's not about the work itself, but how I treat others. Scheduling to arrive RIGHT on time every time means you will be late a lot, and that's extremely unfair to your coworkers. Forget the company, and if you hate your coworkers ok, but you also can't complain if your coworkers are consistently late too. I give myself enough time to change a flat tire, get through a traffic accident, or road construction.

Fast forward to the next paycheck, and I don't get paid for those 15 minutes because "the clock only measures 15 minute increments" I told him I will continue to show up at 5:45 but I will not be moving my forklift an inch until 6. I worked in a supermarket: For my last job I had to arrive on site, change all my clothes at the entrance, then go to the opposite side of the building to clock in and return to the entrance to start working. I lost 20/30 minutes just between changing and going back and forth to clock in. The position of the point where the card was stamped was also put in such a way that if you wanted to use the meal voucher, you had to go back and forth and lose at least 10 full minutes.

A former hospital I worked at did this to me. We had to use on-site scrubs in the OR that were individually wrapped in plastic. You'd show up, use on of your alloted scrub dispenses (given back when you deposited them back in a laundry collection machine). And get dressed. My shift usually started right when huddle began. I was told that I should be ready to work when my shift started. So I came in and clocked in 10 minutes early to get changed. Well that was the wrong answer too. So I just checked out a scrub package the night before and showed up already dressed and didn't tell anybody.

The way I see it, is asking someone to arrive early is fine, but only if you don't expect them to work early I arrive 15-30 mins early for work everyday, I work retail so it's easy for me to arrive a bit early, grab something to eat and couple of waters for the day But you'd be damned if you think I'm clocking in even 30 seconds early, you got me scheduled 1:30-10? Well then I'm not clocking in until 1:30, I will sit my ass right next to the punch clock for 5 mins just on my phone Luckily my managers don't expect me to work early, they'll ask if I'm clocked in "I will be at 1:30" I say and that's when they say "OK at 1:30 take over for [coworker]"

A lot of countries in Europe both legally and culturally believe heavily is the difference between work time and home time, when it is work time you'd better bring you best or not at all in many cases, and when it's home time work had better not bother you at all kinda thing

The problem also comes up that eventually, they will have something come up and be late if they don't allow cushion time for the unknown. Min maxing down to the minute like that is not sustainable.
