Re-upload just gives me an excuse to watch your charming video a second time. :) My unsolicited two cents and probably unpopular opinion about music mixing: Consider not bothering. You -- and nearly every other KZitemr -- don't need music. You're plenty entertaining all by yourself. I have no idea why folks think everything needs a soundtrack because, imho, either they're so loud as to distract or they're too quiet to have any impact. (And yes, I feel this way about non-You Tube documentaries as well. I love space exploration but if your show is constantly awash with "spacey-awe-and-wonder" music, I am going to stop watching right quick. I love nature documentaries but am perfectly capable of finding the humor or adorableness in animals without needing a cartoonish soundtrack telling me what emotional response I should be having. /Old Man Yells At Clouds)

I don't think anyone is taking into account the fact that those huge antlers are attached directly to the moose's skull. This, alone, may transmit more sound to the inner ear of the moose than the ear canal itself, and may provide sensitivity to specific frequencies. The fact that these huge parabola are mounted towards the BACK of the head means that when a moose is feeding, with it's head tilted downward, the antlers are placed in the perfect location to project above the water surface and act as sound receivers while the moose is feeding on aquatic plants UNDER WATER. The connection directly to the moose's skull means that there would be less interference associated with sound traveling through the water. In effect, they are possibly acting as periscopes for sound while the moose feeds with it's head submerged. The antler density and inner structure would be important in determining which specific frequencies were transmitted best, so a casting would likely be insufficient in testing such a...theory. My two cents, for what it's worth. Great channel! I wish you the best!

The material being resin is a fair concern for the bone conduction I wanted to test, but just reproducing the paper should still work by testing the parabolic reflective properties of the antler shape based on ear position.

@@HGModernism Antlers are filled with a honey-comb like structure making them lighter than solid resin, especially under water. The resin casting might get a bit awkward strapped to your head during the under-water testing phase. Just sayin'!

I love moose, but their massive size makes them terrifying. You don’t even realize how huge they really are until you see one in real life. I was once driving in Northern Ontario & saw a moose on the side of a highway after it hit a full-size pickup, which was totalled, & the driver seriously injured. The moose had a broken leg & was sitting - and its head was still higher than the top of the truck.

Experiments with the moose antlers are definitely going to be interesting to see. A question would be, considering moose antlers like other deer antlers are covered in a sort of fuzzy felt as they grow, I'd wonder if the felt effects how the sound is reflected or transmitted through the antlers. Also how much does the direction of the origin of the sound come into effect? Because surely there's a trade off that the antlers may allow for greater forward detection of sounds but potentially be worse at sounds coming from certain angles to the side of the moose. Always happy to see more stuff about moose. I tend to use a moose as a representation of myself ever since I bought an almost 3ft tall cuddly toy of one when Toys R Us was closing down. It was down to £15 and it was close enough to my birthday so I said "why not?" It did say it was a reindeer but literally no one I've shown it too has ever called it a reindeer. The immediate reaction is always "Moose!" It's so big that I could hide behind it when taking a "selfie," so it'd just be the moose toy with my hand appearing round the side. lol.

You want a contact microphone for the antlers. They're super cheap too. The best way to do it would be a bunch of frequency sweeps at various ear positions, then compare the peaks in spl to moose and moose predator sounds. Use a spectrogram to see the peaks in samples of mooses.

She won't get the same numbers, but as a qualitative experiment it works. That is, if actual bone antlers give a gain in one direction and a loss in another, then you'd get a gain and a loss respectively. And it's even fair to assume that the difference would be a matter of a constant factor, but I'm not sure, and it's quite possible this factor will depend on frequency 🤔 so not very constant after all

i think if the sound intensity went above 100% when the ears were drawn closest to the antlers (touching them on the diagram you showed), the antlers may be amplifying the vibrations of the soundwave, like when putting a phone playing music on a table to make it louder/clearer? that's my hypothesis, at least!
@MooImABunny
Күн бұрын
that's... essentially the meaning of the findings. So yeah 👍🏽 *If you wanna get technical, both phenomena aren't amplification. The antlers and the table don't add energy to the system, instead they redirect it so that whoever is in their range gets a signal boost **But it's very common to use the word "amplify" anyways, so don't consider this a correction to your comment, just an interesting tidbit

Surely the fact that the antlers are a replica/cast (resin, fiberglass?) is gonna make the results of any experiment meaningless. Right? If the antlers really do serve as a kind of "super ear" in vivo, then the actual material must be a major component of that function.
