The words to this very familiar tune by Philip P. Bliss were written by Horatio Spafford (1828-1888) in 1873, first published in 1876. He penned the lines upon learning of the deaths of his 4 daughters who were traveling across the Atlantic on a steamship in 1873.
The tune is in Public Domain, and has been borrowed for other sets of words, including the hymn, "There is Rest, There is Peace in the Fold".
