We are animal lovers & try to help out strays when we can. But that involves putting food & water out for them & use a squirt gun to put flea & tic medication on them & notify animal control of any animals that act aggressively toward people or other animals. We also find homes for the ones that are friendly.

A 15 year old girl survived rabies in 2004. She was bitten by a bat in her church, and didn’t seek medical attention. 3 weeks later she started showing the beginning signs of rabies. The medical staff put her into a medically induced coma to protect her brain from damage, and to give her immune system time to produce antibodies and fight the infection. Miraculously, she survived the infection, and now she is married with 3 children.

Rabies travels via the nerves to the brain, it's one of the reasons that the incubation period is so long. You can be vaccinated through a series of shots so long as you are asymptomatic. However once you show any neurological symptoms you are a dead person. The foaming at the mouth is because the rabies virus causes it's victims to become hydrophobic and they can no longer swallow (you can see the violent reaction in human patients when they're given water to drink). Patients suffering rabies go through several phases but ultimately rabies patients wind up in a catatonic state and die shortly after. It is nearly 100% fatal (only one person has ever been confirmed to have survived) which is why it's also best to try and catch the animal that bit you. Otherwise in the west the usual course of actions is to begin treatment immediately if the animal can't be found or captured. It's my understanding that the treatment for rabies has improved over the years for asymptomatic patients but can be extremely expensive. I would rather drown to death than die from rabies, rabies takes everything away from you in pieces. I believe it would be better to commit suicide if you're diagnosed with rabies and die painlessly than spend the weeks or months of agony that is rabies.
@reddragon6964

I know of 2 cases where the Patient survived. One was a 16 year old girl in Illinois but I can't remember where the other one was from. The 16 year old was treated by a Doctor from India where Rabies is Endemic when he recognized the Symptoms and remembered a novel treatment of running IV Antivirals directly into the Spinal Column and it worked. We had a 12 year old patient in the Hospital where I worked in the 1990s that developed Rabies 2 years after exposure. Unfortunately, they didn't find out he had Rabies until the day after he died. One way to test for it is to take Skin scrapings of the Basal Cells at the base of the neck and test them for Antibodies to the Rabies Virus. If you have Rabies the test will be positive.

A little unclear in this vid, but hydrophobia isnt actually a fear of water. It just uses the *-phobia / -philia* naming scheme that you see pretty frequently in medical terms _(think haemophilia, photophobia, etc.)_ Its not meant to be a direct translation taken so literally. Hydrophobia is the inability to consume fluids orally. The smallest attempts to drink anything are met with severe, painful throat spasms that ensure any liquid is thoroughly, brutally coughed out. It's one of the main symptoms, and its just... horrific. Throat is parched, lips are cracked, desperate for anything to drink, but you go into a horrible fit of coughing and choking the second a drop touches your tongue.
@William256
2 жыл бұрын
Hydrophobia is still the fear of water, but in this case, it is rather rational as the spasms presented from Rabies are painful. It's not just if it touches your tongue, you may begin to wretch at the mere thought of water.
@fred1395durst
2 жыл бұрын
You actually develop the psychological aspect of hydrophobia if youre infected with rabies if prolonged exposure to water occurs while having the symptoms (that is nievitable since you will get thirsy, family will try to give you something to drink because theyre worried, etc). You will begin to unconsciously link the painful spams with water, so even the idea of drinking water will cause you to quiver in fear of the pain it causes, which is horrifying but sadly inevitable once symptoms occur. Very very scary disease

I've seen a few rabid animals before. Once when I was a kid playing outside, a raccoon slowly snuck up to me, and I knew that something was wrong and kept away from it. I was also fortunate that it was the slow dumb version, not the violent aggresive kind. Another time my father caught one in a cage and called animal control. Which also after being tested, had rabies. What's scary is a friend of mine who lives not far away. Also met a rabid raccoon. His story was just creepy, he explained climbing up on this big rock and how crazy this thing was as it circles around trying to reach up at him. Having experienced as much as I have makes it very creepy. Like considering that it's been this common, wondering what's out there. That's the only thing that worries me about being in the woods at night. People say there's nothing to worry about, and sure I know that, unless it's something rabid. Just seems easier to avoid it in the light.

I thought that he was dead. Putting his motionless body in the basement to get rid of it the next morning. When I went into the basement, the bag was empty. Over in the corner in a chair he crouched, looking at me through yellow eyes. Never saw a cat look like that before. A truly horrific disease to be taken seriously. In India I rode my motorcycle past a rabid dog that was sat in the middle of the road, biting its jaws up and down with a wild look in its eye

Animals smaller than 1lb still catch the rabies virus, however, no late-stage behaviorological-symptoms indicative of rabid animals present: the virus affects small animals by rapidly deteriorating their physiology, and before dying smaller animals will find a dark quiet place to succumb; so while still infectious there's no time for violent foaming daze.

It's unlikely for opossums and small rodents to even catch rabies. Opossums body temp is to low and rodents RNA is hard for the rabies virus to attach to. Also small animals often don't make it past the first bite.

Also most clinics will have to euthanize and remove the head of your animal to send in for testing if staff is bitten by an animal that is not vaccinated for rabies. This is also one of the reasons we highly recommend rabies vaccines- even if the animal is primarily indoors. No one wants to euthanize an animal that doesn’t need to be.

I remember when I was a kid my mom was watching a movie that to me at that time was like a horror movie. I just remember there was a man, foaming at the mouth, acting like a wild animal, and he was scared to death of water. I asked my mom what was going on and she explained rabies. It was the most bizarre thing I had ever heard of!

It was a rubber halloween decoration bat that his manager told him to use to pretend to eat it. Everyone still thinks its a damn real bat and it was nearly 40 yrs ago. Ozzy and Sharon who were actually there clearly have cleared this up numerous times over the years. Damn people talk about old wives tales.

@@memorialled_zeppelin-warew1346 Cool story but nope. It was a rubber bat and people were throwing animals on stage at a show in Des Moines. Ozzy typically drunk bit the bat thinking it was fake. His wife yelling "Dummy its real!!"

They don't have to bite or scratch. The saliva can give it to someone as well. Had a kitten at a clinic I worked at that had rabies. She was totally normal when she was at the clinic but when she was adopted by a coworker she started becoming aggressive. He did not tell anyone this was happening. He brought her in and placed her in a cage with out saying anything. I got a bad feeling asked where she was. When I saw her I know right away she was rabid. I was lucky I was vaccinated when I was 16 so I was good but everyone else had to go through rabies treatment.

Had a rabies scare last year. A stray neurological cat was a patient in my hospital. It was almost catatonic, and when I went check it’s mucous membranes the cat bit me fast and hard on my finger. Needed to get the immunoglobulin and the vaccine. Fortunately the cats brain tested negative. Here in NYC there have been a few rabid raccoons and one stray cat in 2020. Most of our foxes have mange which unfortunately is lethal if left untreated in them.

I am unsure if squirrels are rodents. But we had to kill one a few weeks ago. It was running in circles but lethargic. It was rabid. We also discovered a disheveled but dead oppusom, that we suspect was the carrier. Disposed of that too. Scary stuff

Squrreils are rodents.also opossum have a body temperature to low to carry rabies. Also rabies isn't the only disease that cuase these symptoms.head trauma,eating fermented vegetation,parasites,ECT. Can all cuase spinning and lethargy.

Radid animals dont have to bite you to transmit the disease , all they have to do is scratch you and break the skin. It's a horrible death. I remember a story a boss told me when he was a kid a man got bite by a rabid dog and the man chained himself to a tree . The man went insane and died while chained to that tree and was buried there.

Rabies is scary. Doesn't it remind you of the zombie virus? I mean, it causes aggressive behavior and you can get infected by a bite or scratch? Maybe that's where people got the zombie idea from?🤔

When I use to hunt about 30 years ago, I was sitting at the base of a tree. This woodchuck started to approach me so started shooing him away , but he kept coming. So I decide to run away with my 35 caliber Marlin in hand.. so about a quarter a mile away and about 10 minutes later here he come. I know you are going to say, “why didn’t you shoot him”. I probably should have. I just left the area.

Rabies is scary because if you begin showing symptoms of it, it's virtually guaranteed that you will die. That's why it's super important to get rabies shots if you get bitten by an animal under strange circumstances and/or if the animal is behaving abnormally. The typical wild animal will flee from humans. If some comes after you and bites you, it might be rabid.

The final question “would u rather die of rabies or drowning” is one of the best, haunting, and tough questions so far, and honestly I have been sitting here a while and even penned this comment to buy time and procrastinate the answer and I still cannot decided. Tough one. A person will Struggle with the pain and the emotional abuse of the Disease. Rabies will give u a extreme sense of impending doom and drowning just auto this Sensation. I am torn. Why r u making me think about this so hard in the middle of the night when I should be sleeping and preparing for work. Thanks

These are pretty stupid diagnoses in the last case! Carpal tunnel?! Anxiety??! Not that the husband helped the victim (his wife) much, only telling doctors about her dog bite after several trips to the ER.
