Judging by a lot of the comments on here, not a lot of people know what makes a locomotive explode, or how durable they really are. As someone who's operated a narrow gauge steam locomotive, and experienced a "runaway" with it, I can say that this is actually on the more normal side of operations, at least for beginner enginemen. No one gets it 100% right the first time in the cab! At least the engine is working. That's more than can be said about a lot of restoration projects *cough* PRR 1361 *cough*

While it may not be unsafe none of this could be considered "normal". To have a runaway engine in Australia would result in an investiagtion into how the drivers exam failed to pickup defective braking. Running an engine thats out of time with so much blowby just raises questions as to how well other parts of the engine have been maintained. When was the last time the gauges had the seals replaced? Is the engine even in ticket to be operated? While nothing will ever go wrong 99% of the time it only takes that 1% for someone to get seriously hurt.

I'm looking forward for the Washington State Public Utilities Commission to shut then down for good! These IDIOTS are going to RUIN steam operations in America, for their selfish egos. Have some trainning and proper procedures with competent mechanical and operational people. Not another Ohio Tractor, not another Gettysburg railroad! Shut em down, before they ruin it for all other steam operations in America!

It's not meant to, it's priming and chucking steam and water straight out of the chimney. They aren't using the drain cocks either, so the cylinders aren't long for this world.
