I got away because I ran into the light shouting for help while doing so. I did not know if the guys were armed or not, and was in no hurry to find out. I did Eskrima for 4 years in college. The most important lesson I learned in that street-fighting based, sparring heavy, weapon-based martial art was when they gave me a knife, first day of class. The teacher (an upperclassman) told me to act out the part of a robber as a demonstration for the class of how a well-traveled practitioner would handle the situation. I was giggling a bit, I think, as I looked at the other freshmen and shrugged before saying "Uh, give me your money?". This man who would put me through 4 years of knife sparring, beat my hands in until they were numb in sparring, and could probably beat 5 of us at once on a good day, calmly reached into his back pocket and handed me his wallet. The upperclassmen all told us to never ever ever ever get into a street fight, to never ever feel comfortable in a knife fight, to never think our training will protect us from the hundreds of things that could go wrong and turn us into an obituary. If a guy asks for your wallet you give it to him, you defend your life, not your money, you don't defend anything but your life.

But if I don't get into drunken street fights how do I become a Drunken Master like Jackie Chan or BJ Penn?
@desnebula5699
4 жыл бұрын
Drunken boxing works. Its the only way to fight off multiple opponents or armed attacked. You dont have to sway like Jackie Chan did, the trick is to seem unprepared. Maybe have your arms down, do an exaggerated flinch. Look scared. This makes your attacker feel safe in going for a big looping right hand, or a very obvious stabbing motion. These are easy to block/counter. The problem with defending a knife attack or any attack while in fighting stance means that your attacker will also get into fighting stance instead of going for a big looping attack they'll go for a more technical attack and that is impossible to defend against. Especially a knife attack. This is something ive practised extensively and let me tell you its fucking impossible to block/disarm a knife attack if your opponent does a fake-attack to get you to try defend it.

48 years on this earth and I wish I could have heard this advice 30 years ago. It would have saved me a chipped tooth, 2 broken bones in my hands, 3 fractured ribs, and money more properly invested in my looming retirement. What is the best way to win a potential confrontation? The ability to influence your opponents with your intellect via compelling and convincing arguments will reap more rewards than simply throwing a punch. IE, whenever possible talk your way out. Rhetoric and logic will take you much further in life than your willingness to fight. Now if you are being assaulted and you are within arms reach...I highly recommend gouging the assailants eyes with extreme prejudice. And then promptly extracting yourself from the area. Best advice I could ever give is this...if you feel that you need to fight, or need any sort of weapon, before you go someplace perhaps you shouldn't go in the first place. Minimize your risks, stay safe, and remain vigilant.

That part about staying away from alcohol and night club partying etc I can really feel, since I never consume alcohol or drugs exactly because of the reasons mentioned in the video (which are also the reasons many religions forbid or look down upon those things; as a Muslim I practice one of those religions) . But because I have some good friends who do sometimes go to such places and party etc and take me with them, I had some experiences being there and not being under influence of alcohol it really hits home just how volentile the atmosphere can be at times in the party scene... Not being intoxicated luckily saved me (and them) from danger several times. But after a few times in danger and fortunately coming out of it unscathed :) , I just began refusing to go with them going out at night because of the unnecessery risk involved, simply because I am not their babysitter ^_^ Besides, there are better and more relaxing ways for me to enjoy my time in this world :) Anyways, I love your preaching , keep it up! A lot of people take years to realize that non-consensual fighting doesn't happen much after graduating school. Especially if they are surrounded by emotionally stunted men who actually do continue violent practices later in life; or if they are violent environments where assaults are regular (even though, as you aptly mentioned, these are very different in motivation and execution). So a lot of us get into combat sports looking to solve or prepare for a problem, that is no longer a threat. I did. It wasn't until after maybe a year and a half of Muay Thai and a year of BJJ that I eventually realized I'd likely *NEVER* use these skills On The Streetz. Still practice because it's a fun way to exercise, and really cool. But yeah, I spent at least a year practicing combat sports thinking ''okay, so this is my game plan if I'm ever in a street fight''.

If you believe that you are likely to get into many fights, you likely will get into many fights. One, that which you send out to the Universe is always sent back to you. Send out a vibe of being ready for conflict, for a fight, and you're probably going to find one. Two, you are probably walking around with a proverbial chip on your shoulder, just ready to cross any imaginary line, commit any imaginary affront. You probably talk about fights, act a certain way, frequent certain establishments... I speak from experience. 138 unsanctioned fights (64 of them were arranged bare knuckle fights for wagering, prize money, usually in or behind a warehouse, maybe a barn, or a truckyard with tractor trailers parked around the fight area), all between 16 and 32 years old. I never lost a tooth, never broke my own bones, never had my nose broke, and I absolutely loved the competition. I am so happy my life is so different and I never care to fight anyone, anywhere, at anytime. When my mindset changed, because I hurt someone severely who jumped me in a liquor store parking lot, my whole life changed. I'm happy now. I wasn't then.

Where I grew up, people would go out looking for a fight. They would drive around or walk around depending on their age and stare at people until someone stared back at them, which was enough justification in their mind to start a fight. “What are YOU looking at?!” was a common phrase I heard growing up and I just looked away and walked away. But lots of people puffed out their chest and yelled at each other and then punched and tumbled and punched some more. Those “street fights” were completely avoidable. What wasn’t avoidable for some people was what we called “getting jumped” which meant 5 or 6 guys would surround someone and punch and kick them for about 30 seconds then run away before teachers or cops could punish them. I only saw one guy survive this. He was literally twice as big as the 2 teens who attacked him. He looked like an adult male and they looked their age: 13. And he dominated, but that was just enough to survive, not to appear magical or like Bruce Lee. But all the other times, when multiple people your size attack you, you’re going to get hurt. I’m not saying they deserved to get “jumped” but it was usually because their gang jumped a member of the other gang and then his was payback; or else someone was threatening someone else and the threatened guy brought his friends to ensure victory.

Partially because I know how easy it is to hurt someone else, and for things to go wrong and get hurt myself. It might be part of personality as well, but I became good at deescalating situations. Still, I was around a lot of people that still got into street fights, and carried guns. I eventually distanced myself from them, and my life is a lot more peaceful now.

I can understand the romanticized views of street fighting: Being a badass while protecting your pride and dignity with witnesses that will talk about it forever! Sounds nice. But even professional athletes can accidentally cause irreparable damage to fellow competitors. So you COULD walk away completely unscathed after sending a guy packing with one punch. You could also lose an eye because the person decided they were going to gouge it. You could die because the guy got embarrassed and grabbed a weapon to kill you with. Unrestricted fighting should always be a last resort because nobody has trained enough to be immune to bullets and knives.

I don't know how I managed to beat him in hindsight, can't remember what I did exactly. But I do remember he left with a broken rib on his right hand side and a broken nose. Somehow we became friends afterwards, don't know how I managed that either.

When you're a kid. Adults don't get invoived in street fights. If I fight it's for keeps. I always think I'm gonna end up in hospital or in prison or dead. Luckily, on the one or two oćcasions where this has bappened I was able to run away very fast. Not an option anymore, being older. Actually, being older is very deadly, cornered tiger and all that, assuming you're not totally decrepit

JZ had the best answer by far. After the USMC and a few decades of training the most valuable martial art that I can recommend is Verbal Judo. Sure it takes time and practice to master but Funny lines can diffuse serious situations and make tough guys laugh at their Macho Stupidity. Try it out. It’s fun and kind of addicting. cheers!

We clearly have different definition. I call every fight happened "on the street", a street fight. China has one of the worst, if not the worst self defense law. I read enough in recent, that people got charged and jailed for defending their own life or their family, while crime still in progress. Example 1: a disabled guy was charged because he killed (with a knife) a drunk who forcefully broke into his home/business at mid night, threatening the safety of himself and his family. The authority charged him because he used too much force. Example 2: a man was charged murder because he killed a man who was raping his wife, in the fight he was attempt to stop the crime. Example 3: an old couple was charged and jailed for murder because their daughter's violent ex boyfriend, frequently threatening their safety, at one night, jumped into their home with knife, attacking them, and they were simply fighting back, in the process killed him. The examples goes on and on. In the eyes of Chinese authority, you are the criminal if you defend your life (or your loved one/family). So you are technically right to say "never" in China, because they have the most retarded laws regarding self defense.

@@GuitarsRockForever no that's what I'm saying. That's a common misconception. Every state is different. New York is a duty to retreat state. That means you are Always obligated to try to get away, including inside your own home, as it is also a state without castle doctrine. Castle doctrine in our common law means you kill anyone who is breaking into your home, no questions asked basically. It's also illegal to own a pistol unless the state issues you a license. People go to prison all the time for killing or even shooting at people in their homes. One case not too long ago, someone was breaking into a guy's shed so he fired his shotgun into the air. He was arrested for illegal discharge of a firearm. New York state protects the criminals. Just look at our new bail reform law, which releases people who rape kids and rob banks. Every state in the united states is different.

@@psyience3213 Well, even that, you guys are in better position. Say someone broke into your home, you had no where to run and the bad guy chased you to a dead end, started to attack you with a big knife. Most likely, under NY law, you could fight him and if in the process, you killed him unintended, you will be fine. Under Chinese law however (assume you are not rich/powerful), it seems you could only fight him and possibly hurt him at the moment of the attack. Meaning if he wanted to stab you, only at the flash of time while the his knife was in motion, you could defend yourself. If the knife already inside your body, the attack was done and you cannot fight back. That's how retarded Chinese laws are.
@psyience3213

@@GuitarsRockForever it's not even that cut and dry. you would have to prove that killing him was either an accident or unavoidable. The state doesn't care about innocent until proven guilty. The burden of proof is on you. Often times the statement you give immediately after the traumatic event is what they base their case on. You say 1 wrong thing, whether you're right or not, and your done for. I dint agree with these kinds of laws im just saying, there are places even in the united states that are similar to China. I like how ramsey is kind of a shill for those communists.

I had the opportunity today. I was on my bike after a meeting in Moorgate London and some geezer on a bike was overtaking me on the inside on his bike. I asked him what the fuck he was doing. This caught him off guard and he claimed I was taking up too much space, called me a copper and said I was bullying him. This was weird as prior to that he had been the aggressor. I thought, he’s looking for a way out, ok give him that. He cycled away from me. It was a better option that putting him to sleep.

Trying to pick a fight with me and I said “Sir you’re too close I can’t let you get close I’m drawing a line right here don’t cross it with any violent intention otherwise this is gonna get ugly for you” and he went closer to me but I could tell he wasn’t trying to hurt me he was just posturing because he was actually trying to convince himself he wasn’t scared

By your definition, when should a martial artist engage in a street fight? When he's the friend breaking it up to let both guys save face and pretend like "I was just about to knock you out".

Street fights can be fun, don't shy away from it when you are young and wont get jail time. Just avoid areas with serious criminality where people with weapons may get involved.

Kinda like how soldiers and martial artists aren't allowed to throw a punch as a means of self defense unless they are against more than one opponent or the opponent in question has a weapon. This is because by military regulation, a soldier is not permitted to react until they are in immediate danger. So to the people that walk up to soldiers and act tough, just remember that this guy only walked away because he'd be better off snapping you neck than punching. This same logic applies to any martial artist. They walk away because they can get a life sentence for throwing a punch so the reality is that in walking away, they are simply performing the highest level of self defense possible. The highest form of self defense is to remove yourself from the equation.

An interesting parallel is something when I was arrested and spent 15 months in jail (very long story, but nothing violent or even physical). My reputation growing up revolved around martial arts skill, speed, and strength. They (and by that I mean my family and friends) expected me to eventually fight somebody and they said they'd be more worried about the damage I would do to said aggressor. That is nowhere even near what I did. My principle behavior was not to make waves. I was calm, played cards, and did my time. When I moved to one of the privileged pods, we had a few guys from Max, and one of them who is a big guy (looks like an Iranian Mike Tyson) even said he really enjoyed my attitude, as I seemed to exude tranquility. The way I look at it is to listen to your body during a confrontation. When a fight/flight/freeze response occurs, people are most usually in either flight or freeze, but people try to override this, which forces them to fight against their own body. Regarding threats, I look at it like the animal kingdom. When a creature attempts to look terrifying and exaggerate aspects of themselves to instill fear, those are usually the prey. Predators tend to not do this, because they don't want to scare their food away. So in jail, when I got in a heated argument with another inmate, I would simply concede to their point. It doesn't bother me if they believe they can take me, so long as they don't try to actually do it. The whole "knock out the biggest guy in there on your first day" mentality is extremely myopic. Say you do, well then that makes you the biggest guy there and you will have to deal with newbies coming after you to prove themselves.

I like the answer No. You get a lot of MMA fighters or BJJ practitioners (Or fight wannabes.) Who comment on every traditional martial art video, "This is crap, this won't work on the street." Like the only purpose to learn any martial art is street fighting. Yes there are muggings and maniacs trying to hurt you, but the best defense is awareness. To avoid troublesome places and don't go out late at night alone.

I see your point but I tend to be more makavalian . Every street fight (nyc) I was in the other guy was first to get physical . I don’t put my hands on a man until he plays himself . Obviously use your better judgement bc all the MMA in the world not gonna stop a bullet . There is a time for war and a time for peace . Alcohol definitely makes weak men tough
