I noticed that a lot of them were doing a ballet leg lift, more than a kick. As in, their upper half, was still vertical. They weren't leaning their body with the kick. That's why the dude's kick looks graceful like a swan, and theirs didn't.

That makes sense. There was something more dynamic and kapow about his kicks, and outside of the practice and experience, I couldn't pinpoint exactly why his looked more like a kick and more "masculine". Theirs looks feminine and like the kick part is fighting the rest of their body. (Except one of the girls in the beginning in the middle of the room, kinda rounder. She looked like she was letting the kick and her leg lead the rest of her body, but she had less control and center than they. But that almost seems like that's what you have to unlearn. Like they kept trying to keep to a spin that's centered on the point of a toe, when it's not). Ah it's like there's a weight shift on where the center of the spin is, and their bodies dont quite comprehend it.

Martial artist here. When dancers do martial moves like kicks, it's always so beautiful and impressive. They have mad control, can do it slowly, and they look like they're floating, whereas martial artists prioritize speed. The slow control and lean-back the guys have in that jump is really impressive. As for why the girls are having trouble, I think their arms aren't in good positions leading into it, and they don't know where in the rotation to lift their leg. Once they get those two things down, it all flows together.

It's fascinating how, even when imitating an aggressive move they naturally turn it into something fluid & graceful. They are having to overcome their instinct to keep their centre of gravity moving smoothly when the move requires a sharp peak.

I used to love those kind of days. I always wanted to dance with the boys because I was more of a natural turner and jumper. Ahhh the memories 😌

I love this so much. I hope the boys/men have a similar class? An appreciation for how hard each one’s dancing actually is breeds a new level of respect!

The girls could’ve done it but the gracefulness & confined movements entrained in to them. ballet is kind of like real life that way

_Switchism_ is always so delightful!🙃 Not only because it' s fun but because it helps to realize even more of how tremendously difficult are some things that we take for granted (not this specific case, this is difficult here and in the neighbouring galaxy😅). Switching "genderelements", apparatus or disciplines is eye opening, a reality bite of humility, and a masterclass of male/female biomechanics. Plus, who doesn' t like to relax, play and being goofy for a while?😝. I see some accidental gorrrrgeus RG leaps btw!😍 🧛🏻♀️🖤

Switching helps everyone realize how ridiculous we are for still going along with gender roles for absolutely no reason just because it's familiar

Okay but this just makes me even more frustrated by how gendered ballet STILL is. A lot of dance styles have caught up but ballet is still lagging.
