@@leannezezeski-sass2773 I can't say for swans in specific since it's more common in predatory and arboreal nesting birds, but birds abandoning one of their chicks is not a myth and happens more often than you'd think. It's a behavior believed to be meant to allow the parents to focus resources on the healthier chicks in the brood during times of food being in short supply or when one of the chicks falls ill so the others don't catch it as well. In point of fact, the White Stork does it often enough that some folks actually spent three years doing a study on which parent usually did the chick throwing when it came time to huck the baby out of the nest (For the record, 8/9 times it was the father). And don't even get me started on the Shoebill. For a fairly gentle bird those evil looking bastards are downright mean about it.

They should also teach their kids to never, ever touch wild babies with their bare hands as their mama can turn on them for not smelling like themselves anymore. But you are completely right.
@raysapaw
Жыл бұрын
@@absolutelynotarobot True. Children like the kid watching dad rescue a baby swan learn about compassion. However they must learn it's only okay to touch wild animals in an absolute emergency. Most wild animals fear humans and react badly to human scent on their offspring. As children we were told never to touch baby birds or their nest while they were alone waiting for mum to return and feed them. We were told if we did touch the nest the mother would abandon it and her babies, as she could not move them. With any animal, only touch it if it is grown and invites contact, always letting them control the situation. Only in absolute emergencies where the animal is in danger help it. Even then try to hide your scent using tools, gloves, strong smelling food and understand that the animal sees humans as predators, and will try to avoid or attack you even if you are helping. For sure once it's safe it won't stop to thank you, but get away from you to safety. Maybe then it may realize it is no longer suffering because you touched it and fear you less. This situation was rare and beautiful, but I hope dad explained that it was generally wrong to touch any animal that isn't part of your family unless the animal initiates contact, but particularly bad to touch wild animals. With other people's pets too, respect the pet as it learns to trust your smell, or it might attack.

@@raysapawthe thing about animals abandoning their babies because of human scent is a myth. It’s not true. I assume that the myth was made up as a way to make sure kids didn’t take wildlife from its natural habitat. But that isn’t true, and that myth should never prevent anyone from helping an animal in need. But as you said, helping them should only be the last resort, because wild animals can die of shock. That’s a much bigger concern than scent.

Swans... Beautiful creatures of both extremes. What a wonder of nature To see the parents patiently awaiting their chick's return is something else to behold. To see the caring family remove the danger from the little swan is just as wonderful. This is truly an example of what humanity's relationship to nature should be. Blessings to the family.❤ Blessings to the swans.❤

Yes we do I'm so sick of the" macho stupido men” if men only knew how much more they are adored by being an animal lover they would probably take classes to teach them to be a even better one; because us women are in awe of a true compassionate caring loving man. no better way to show it then with dependent innocent animals😮😅 good job family👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤

If I know anything from watching swan rescue videos, it's always "heck off" no matter what the circumstances are. Pulling them off a highway that they thought was a river to relocate them to nearby body of water? "Heck off!" Saving a baby from entanglement? Parents may beat you with their wings and "Heck off!" So ungrateful.
@lizg2153

I agree with both comments. The swan probably thought "heck off" (they're HIGHLY protective and defensive), but it's nice to see people helping them either way. Not to receive gratitude, but simply because it's decent to help.

@@Magpie5yndromes that why you would save a baby swan ? To shine in the light of their gratitude ?😮 We are all Earthlings and have the same basic needs. Humans have some natural tools with which we help others in distress. Maybe one should check their empathy level before scolding other species for protecting their family. By the way, just fyi, swans mate for life. The swan parents on the road are lost and stressed out. They are using the defence measures Nature gave them. They need to save their babies from harm and find the river to save their lives. Being chased by humans is not a good tactic for corralling a family of water birds. If one lives in an area where the swans are often on the road, perhaps the municipality and animal advocates could be contacted to resolve the situation, eg. if the waterways are near each other, perhaps the waterways could be connected by the humans.😊🦢❤ These swans are obviously very familiar with the humans, and trust them to help their baby.
