I taught a young man from Israel decades ago--he had just finished his mandatory military experience. This wonderful young man was now in university in US. He assured me that those of his generation wanted peace, and they would have preferred to share the land on Gaza than have war. Netanyahu was in power then. Time for him to go.

Thank you Maryann for your incredibly powerful message. The protests are eerily similar to what I experienced at Kent State during the Vietnam war. Our democracy depends on the right to have peaceful protest. It is the only way our voices can be heard. Thank you, Maryann. In 1970 I was in the anti-Viet Nam war march in East Los Angeles. I was a Mexican American college student and I marched in the Chicano Moratorium. We were students, families with small children, and workers. It devolved into extreme violence through the aggression of the LAPD. It became a terrifying riot perpetuated by the violence of the police. A Chicano journalist was murdered. And all because our brown brothers and sons were being drafted at a huge rate to fight in Vietnam Nam and we demanded a stop to it. I have NEVER lost my ideals and fought injustice throughout my life. I cannot march now. I suffer with moderate Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. But I can pray (actually, chant) for the protection of all the youth who have stood up as I once did. And I can send money to support the Palestinians. Evil can be vanquished. But to do so, millions must wake up and shout NO!!! I am filled with overwhelming gratitude for these young ones who will not tolerate the evil of this genocide. 🙏🏻from Whittier, California

This is what they are afraid of: voices and freedoms given to a wider more inclusive society, a greater efficacy for women, minorities, religions, flexible genders, children and students. The attack is lead leading men in our businesses, courts, congress and religious voters, and voters from our back country, mostly the poor south. This indignant class, seeing their power diminish, do not want to listen, or share, or change. From what I’ve seen on the news, many of the protesters are threatening the Jewish students. The Jews have said they are afraid for their lives. No, Israel shouldn’t be slaughtering the Palestinians who are innocent, but students shouldn’t be threatening innocent Jews, either. During the Vietnam War we protested on my college campus. There were no threats made against Asian students. I agree with their right to protest, but not violence of any kind.

Please read up on the shouts of Death to Jews and Bomb Tel Aviv at the Columbia protests. There are videos of protestors using a human chain to push Jewish students off of campus. Most of the protests are peaceful and I support those whole heartedly. But don't tell Jewish people that there is no antisemitism happening at some of these protests. We know what antisemitism looks like. Dismissing all claims of antisemitism as unfounded shows a shocking lack of compassion for American Jews. We are not Israel. We are not Netanyahu any more than you are Trump. Yet Jewish students ARE being harassed and threatened in some places. We have stood up and fought for black and brown people for years, just look back to the civil rights movement. That those who stood with us fighting for rights of other could dehumanize us so quickly is horrifying. If you've never lost a friend or been threatened because you wear a chai or star around your neck, never had a mezzuzah torn off the door frame of your home, never been told you are unwelcome by people you fought for and still have compassion for in spite of everything, you really have no idea what you are talking about.

@YuniX2 There were Israeli Jews at the university. Perhaps they vs. American Jews were the target of the anti Israeli /Jew remarks. The students I saw being interviewed identified as Israeli. Your point is valid - and bombing Tel Aviv should not be off the table. As Netanyahu says: this is war. Bad things happen in war. Netanyahu and the Likkud need to be stopped - they have gone past the point of reason, and the world is turning its back on Israel. I do not want Israel to receive *any* weapons or financial support.

I was very active in the 2011/2012 Occupy Wall Street protests. People don’t know that movement included networks for learning, “teach-ins” and many seminars at local universities discussing the 99% disproportionate distribution of wealth in our country. I learned a lot. I also learned that the military had excess stockpiles of armored tanks and other weapons which they sold to police departments across the country. That never happened before. You ask, since when is peaceful protest unlawful in the US? The cities now have these stockpiles of military tanks and weapons they never had before. The profits made by the government in those sales incentivizes local police to use them. They never used “riot police” in NYC before 2011.

I agree with every word you have said Maryanne. You have echoed exactly my own thoughts and words on these atrocities. I applaud our young people around the world for their actions in protesting this gross equivalence levelled on the people of Palestine by Netanyahu. Even the everyday Jewish population appears to be against their own government for their totally over the top retribution for Oct 7th 2023.

Thank you, Maryann for your honest and open hearted words. My heart aches for what is happening in our world at this time. Hate begets hate. While it is easy to blame Trump for everything, the truth is that he pulled the bandage off the underbelly of America. It has forced us to see so much of what we turned our backs on. Time for a major awakening on so many levels. Peace be with you.
