@@Thestuffnope In that case, you simply land. If it gets stuck in the up position, landing would be quite difficult but not impossible - some "tailsitter" concepts (briefly addressed in the video) did not have the cockpit-pivot mechanism, so the pilot would have to look over their shoulder to land. Perhaps doing so would have been part of the training for flying this aircraft. And if worst came to worst, I'm sure it had ejection seats.
@quillmaurer6563

I think of this the same way I think of WWI fighter pilots: Sketchy, perhaps, but way less dangerous or unpleasant than most other duties during that war. And helicopters are full of critical could-easily-fail-and-often-do parts. Fixed-wing pilots often describe helicopters as "An assortment of parts all attempting to become random in motion," and given helicopters' complexity that's not too far from the truth (granted I'm a civilian fixed-wing pilot so perhaps biased). I could actually imagine this being overall simpler and more reliable than a conventional helicopter. The one drawback is that it wouldn't be able to auto-rotate if all engines fail, and I could imagine with one or two of the three engines out it might be able to fly horizontal but not hover and land vertically, this aircraft not capable of safely landing horizontally. But also in its favor, unlike conventional helicopters, it could be and I'm guessing would have been equipped with ejection seats, so if worst came to worst the crew could give it the multi-million-dollar "fuck this shit I'm out."

NOPE... That was a copy from a NAZI project. The first design of an aircraft clearly using the coleopter concept was developed during World War II. From 1944 on, the Luftwaffe was suffering from almost continual daytime attacks on its airfields and was finding it almost impossible to conduct large-scale operations. Their preferred solution was to introduce some sort of VTOL interceptor that could be launched from any open location,

To me the most unrealistic aspect of this whole thing was its projected weapons and ammunition storage. I mean 12,000 mg rounds or 500 grenades for each of two turrets, 1,000 rounds of 30mm cannon ammo for a third turret, PLUS an optional 500 rockets or another 30mm auto cannon turret sounds more akin to ammo capacity for something in Star Wars than real life! If i look at both sides the two side guns, and look at the space under them, an average ammo box holds 500 bullets, do I think there is room to stack 24 boxes high? that would be about 240 inches high, 19-20 foot. That puts it in the realm of possible for me. That would actually leave most of the room for the 30mm cannon, and you can see there is a bulge under the main center gun too adding more room for that one. The 30mm is harder to gauge, but I think there is room for 700+ there so if they thought 1000 sure Id buy it. I just don't know how they would load it, deal with jams, what feeding method they would use.

I can see why they didn't make this in the 60's,70's. But I could definitely see this design resurface in the next generation of drone platforms. Turning this into a drone would solve a lot of its issues revolving around crew safety/comfort. You could also make much more efficient designs using drone tech and amplify its capabilities significantly. The only question would be is it more effective to have larger drone gunships capable of overwhelming close air support or thousands of smaller drones with smaller smart munitions. I think both used in conjunction would be absolutely devastating but it might be a lot cheaper to just go with smaller drones and just as effective.

As someone who repair industrial machines this thing give me shivers. This was developed befor computers where a thing so every control surfaces and every articulated bits had to be fully operated manualy or have some kind of mechanical contraption to ease the mental load on the crew. Like for the articulated cockpit do you give full control of motion to the crew or do you have some kind of gyroscope coupled with air speed sensors that automatically tilt the cockpit when the aircraft is slow enough and angled upward? How do you aim the guns? Do you have cameras and an old crt black and white monitor in the cockpit with the shitty quality that goes with it or do you have some absurd optical periscope that would allow the gunner to see from under the cockpit? The tilting cockpit would also need some kind of locking mechanism in case the hydraulic of the craft fail. You don't want the cockpit to start dangling mid flight but what if that locking mechanism seize and you can't tilt the cockpit anymore? the shifting in center of mass caused by the tilting cockpit would also make the trensition between vertical to leveled flight hard to manage for the pilot so you would need some way to automatically compensate for that and again that automation would need to be mostly mechanical in nature. TL:DR this thing would have been as complex as a nuclear powerplant but operated by only 2 grunts and would have caused maintenance crew to unalive themselves faster than foot soldier would die from actual combat.

This type of aircraft is known as a coleopter; there is an article about them on the Wikipedia. The only one ever built and flown, in France, crashed on its ninth flight. The pilot ejected, but by that time he had discovered the thing had many undesirable flying characteristics, and he hadn't even tried to fly it horizontally. Convair would have had to overcome all these problems. Maybe they could have, but I imagine it would have taken so much time and money that the project would have ended up cancelled anyway.

From a Sailor's perspective, its a good concept that came at the wrong time. The technology to make a vehicle like this viable simply wasn't there, and still isn't today. Yes, you could fit a lot more of these onto an aircraft carrier. But the thing with VTOL aircraft is that taking off vertically burns a shitton of fuel. That limits the aircraft's combat range. Frequent VTOL takeoffs would also damage the flight deck over time, which would result in higher maintenance costs and reduced capabilities from the ships meant to carry them. And that's not even touching on the fact that its essentially a giant munitions pinata just begging to be turned into an impromptu Fourth of July fireworks display. The concept could possibly be applied to modern drone technology, but as a manned jet-powered aircraft it's completely impractical for modern warfare.

Great idea. In the manned version, it worked well before the advent of effective AA of the battlefield, but not in our era, as the combat vehicle is outdated. However, a UAV of this scheme will work great for delivering parcels, hot pizza or cold champagne at 4-30 in the morning. The outer annular housing will reduce the noise from the rotor to acceptable levels. It is very interesting as a compact kamikaze UAV, combining vertical takeoff, the absence of a starting device and the speed of ammunition delivery.

I don't think it's insane, but the rotating cockpit design is bad... all that weight rotating up and down would require a lot of mechanicals and hydraulic systems that would in turn weigh more still.. reducing useful payload and requiring far more maintenance I have something in mind where the Pilot and WSO sit in their own pods connected by a central spar and they are balanced so very little force is required to tilt them across that central axis (Think like a Hammerhead shark but the 'hammerhead' rotates) Less weight, less obstructed airflow to the ducted fan in hover, more redundancy (if one crew pod is destroyed, the other is out of harm's way)

It's actually called a "annular wing" aircraft and there were a lot of them designed (and some built such as the French SNECMA Coléoptère) in the '50s and 60s. The issue with the annular wing is it's not really good at level flight having less actual range than a regular wing. On the other hand you could add wings onto the hard points for ferry flights but even for near range flights some type of tilt wing would likely be a better option. My personal headcanon is that the side-by-side cockpit would likely have been replace before production with something more like the Cobra or Apache as it would allow a more robust tilting mechanism. (Going to do a video on the artillery cannon armed Chinook? :) )

Many designs that we developed after WWll and the Korean War that were shelved, many of them were way ahead of their time, and with the our understanding of how flying works, I can see a UAV type of design. We have many games that let you build your own custom aircraft/vehicle, and it will let you test it out based on RL conditions in game. That design probably got shelved due to the vehicle not being able to Hoover in place while firing the 30mm cannon, and the technology at that time was just starting to pick up, because we were trying to beat the USSR in the space race. Now with better Avionics and aviation knowledge, we can finally start building designs that seemed to go to be true. I liked the concept of how it could land and provide insane amounts of firepower. This design would definitely work well in Ukraine for hitting the trenches, and just parking out front and essentially over power anything on the ground. I always thought that we would develop a tower system, that could be dropped and essentially manned remotely by those on the ground, and provide extra firepower for ground units. Also it could be opened up to provide ammunition, and a ccp( casualty collection point) for wounded to be provided some protection, but dropping some type of tower system will have to penetrate anything, and be able to stabilize itself in any terrain. Many times when they would air drop supplies by parachute, not every drop would be close enough for the guys on the ground to secure, and so I thought of a rod like design that could be dropped like a JDAM. The shape would be designed like a arrow to penetrate into the ground, and then 4 10ft platforms would stick out to stop the supply pod from being destroyed.

I taught myself how to use a computer. I'm glad i was still young enough to grasp all the information I was learning. It's sad to watch an older person struggle with the unknown.

The US military isn't anywhere near as funded as you would think. We used to drill in the desert of TX and NM and have to yell bang bc we didn't have the funds for even blanks. And that was the Army, not the infamously cash-strapped Marines.

I think the ejection method is probably the failing issue considering the pull that would probably be coming from all around the cockpit by the props or turbine whichever is used. This is an interesting design though ill be surprised if we dont currently have these being prototyped.

France did this too, it called "Cleocopter". And they made it fly The problem is just.... It refuse to fly horizontally. When they really forced it, it just tumble down, killing the pilot. I mean, this kind plane have nothing to generate lift on horizontal flight, let's be honest with that

Couldn't they make some lift out of the huge circel that surrounds the blades. If it would be wing shiped both bottom and top than it would be at least like 6 meters of wing together?
@bocahdongo7769

@@thotmorgana no. Those perfectly circular yet small duct didn't do anything at all on lift. You can make it much more oblong and bigger to harvest the actual lift, but at that point, future alien race technology called "helicopter" makes more sense to build

It's just 1,000 rounds for the 30mm cannon and 500 rounds for the 2 40mm grenade launchers. All of that can easily fit on the lower-half of the nacelle. The upper-half of the nacelle would house the fuel.

I wonder how they intended to reload the 106mm recoilless rifles given how they are a single shot weapon without provision for a magazine in the basic design. So either super complicated and heavy autoloaders, or one of the crew has to climb outside and do it

I'm no aeronautics engineer, but what I'm seeing is a single source of thrust that's fixed in place relative to the vehicle's mass (probably wording that wrong). How was this thing supposed to change modes at all, let alone avoid crashing or getting shot out of the sky in the attempt?
@CyberVonCyberus

Supposedly, it had 4 jet engines around the ring which would be used to tilt the craft from vertical position into horizontal and vice versa, they'd also be used to tilt from side to side during hover mode. Although I doubt it would be very manoeuvrable.

That cockpit.... if they put a sphere there in the middle it could rotate in the sphere. No worries about shooting the nose off. It could easily stay level with gravity so just need some electromagnets as dampeners. And hopefully there's a model for this for flight simulators.
