Cortosis was introduced way before the prequels but after the original trilogy in the older post-Endor novels and comics. Prequel trilogy itself introduced phrik as the metal used in electrostaffs which was why they didn't just slice apart against lightsabers, and beskar came from Legends although I don't recall where outside of the Karen Traviss novels that basically built Mandos into nigh unkillable super soldiers that were basically gods in human skin. Cortosis and phrik at least came around when Lucas was still running the show (more or less) and were sort of always part of Star Wars lore. Beskar came along a bit later, IIRC.

The lightsaber headbutting is what really sells it. It's already enough that The Stranger's abruptly revealed to have cortosis, but then they use it in such a pragmatic way. Generation Tech's fight breakdown sussed out that their fighting style is actually rather unsophisticated and they relied more on tactical advantages--unbalancing the Jedi, vanishing and reappearing, the cortosis vambrace and helmet--than any particular skill with a lightsaber. Like Yord says, "he's not making any sense." It's a "primitive" move, which is what's so fascinating about it.

I appreciate when Legends ideas are brought back *purposefully* to tell the story, and I think this is a good example of that. It helps to tell the story of what a threat he is, and the fact that he is something outside the context of what the Jedi of this era are prepared to deal with. I like it, I think it's smartly done, and anyone who headbutts a lightsaber has my respect, and whatever real-life writer or choreographer who not only put that into the script, but maked it look as good as it did in The Acolyte is now my favorite person working on Star Wars.

It is a very brittle substance which is why its not usual made into armor also it is very poisonous and can even deactivate robots so it is difficult to mind it also explodes if in extreme cold If I remember correctly. It an energy absorbing matter. Cool enough count Dooku cape was made out of the stuff which made it not only fashionable but factional has a shield. In legends Darth Desolous killed thousands of Jedi by using a shield made out of the stuff, it took the entire Jedi counsel to kill him, although dark Sidious basically basically did the same thing without it so.

It's just such an elegant use of the wider universe that they've built, without actually distracting from the narrative by having some character point it out. It's there for people who recognize it, but if you've never heard of cortosis before it's still cool and you still intuitively understand what's happening. It also makes it very believable how he could kill so many Jedi.

Most people have only seen cortosis in Jedi Outcast where it's incorrectly stated to only resist lightsabers. Also that game was already hard enough without a mechanic that would render your lightsaber unusable for a few moments. But it's explicitly said in Vision of the Future it creates a feedback along the blade that shuts it down, and that novel came out years before Jedi Outcast.

Not the same Cotorsis is heavy and brittle, but not only blocks lightsaber blades but shorts them out - but being brittle means that it doesn't last long against other attacks (blaster fire, bullets, explosives, mundane blunt force) Beskar is resistant to pretty much everything and merely heats up with sustained contact with lightsabers... The problem with these materials is that they're supposed to be rare but we will increasingly see them EVERYWHERE.
