I think it's prudent to get proficient with both the AK and AR platforms. What do you do if your AR suffers a catastrophic failure and all that's in reach of you is a fallen raider or comrade's AK? And vise versa. Get proficient with both. Already own one platform? Make your next rifle purchase the other platform. The shooter should make the weapon effective, not the other way around.

Try putting 5000 rounds of a centerfire caliber in a backpack and hike a few miles. Out of your 3 choices AR15 with a suppressor It’s accurate It’s faster to get a follow up shot It will handle anything in my area animal wise. 5.56 ammunition is lighter than 7.62x39 or 7.72x51NATO Its parts are plentiful and abundant It’s easy to maintain and repair and replace parts if needed Magazines and ammunition are easily found If I wasn’t in the USA, I would probably choose differently. In a com block county I would definitely choose the AK. In England, probably 12ga. If f you can’t find ammunition, you’re screwed once your stockpile is gone.

12ga Mossberg 500 beats them all, lol! 12ga is incredibly versatile, Foster-style rifled slugs give you that 70mm raw kinetic energy you just won't get out of a rifle (1oz slug is impacting around 2,600 ft/lbs of energy within 50yds) out to about 150yds (shots can be made beyond that, but not as reliably), the shells can be loaded with all manner of improvised projectiles, it can be used to reliably drop ANY game animals in North America (assuming you're using the appropriate loads), reliability and replacement parts are non-issues (unlike the Remington 870 if the extractor breaks), the platform can be configured into pretty much any role you need, be it close quarter low penetration security, water fowl gun, small game and upland fowl gun, big game gun, or even precision close-mid range security. They can also be configured into a "master key" rifle attachment, fire non-lethal riot ammo, and even Taser slugs (that's a thing). Also, a Mossberg 500 is stupid-easy to train on, and takes very little practice to become proficient with. All those reasons are why I bought a Mossberg 500, and I'm STILL trying to figure out what rifle I want, though I'm leaning towards a PSA AR-10 chambered in .308 Winchester. I'm not entirely sure, but I think .308 Win can also run .30-06 (.308 is higher pressure), kinda like a 9mm can run a .380 Auto, though it's not advisable. Again, I'm still researching rifles to figure out what my first one will be (I've had plenty of experience with .22LR and some with .30-06, so I'm not worried about starting with hunting cartridges).

Good choice for the Mossberg 500 Now the rifle i’m not totally convinced on the PS AR 10 here’s a video tell him I sent you it would be pretty cool The damage on the bolt you’re seen in the video that is absolutely not supposed to happen I’m pretty sure the timing on the carrier is off and it’s trying to open before it’s ready or the metal is too soft this rifle is most definitely going to fail kzitem.info/news/bejne/z3xpvI2Ba2hpfGU Now .30-06 and 308 The projectile is the same and the 308 is based off the .30-06 but you cannot directly change out the cartridges However if you have a loading press you can convert .30-06 to 308 with some minor work I’m going to do a video on this but I can’t upload it to KZitem it’s against the policies I will upload it to my GunStreamer account I’ve basically you need to drop off case links and the 30-06 and resize it Now when selecting a rifle here’s a video I put together that will help get you moving in the right direction 🤔Ask The Right Questions kzitem.info/news/bejne/1aKV3H2Diol0m6g

AK-47, if I had to choose between those 3. I see 7.62x39mm as a happy medium between .308 and .223, plus it's bound to be reliable and easier to maintain than an AR or SCAR. .22LR would be great with higher capacity magazines and in reliable, semi-auto firearms, but in the apocalypse, I doubt many of those would be around for long. Still, I'd think a folding pistol 9mm carbine would be good enough in my hands. If I could choose ANY rifle, it'd be the American-180. Personally, I prefer pistols, though. Lighter, faster, more discrete and a person who gets shot 1st is likely going to feel it more if he/she's already uncomfortable (common in an apocalypse), and will likely catch an infection or bleed out soon enough.

You make a lot of interesting points. But my reality is this: When the hurricane was imminent and when it turned out to be worse than we thought a year ago (Irma) I first loaded my AK and all its mags, then my Mossberg and then, and only then, did I make sure all the mags for my AR were loaded as the AR remained in the safe. It wasn't hordes of zombies I was worried about. It was people in close quarters. And as was proven in Nam 50 years ago (in my time) the 7.62x39 kills better than the .556/.223 at closer ranges and can better penetrate car doors and windows. In that kind of situation, operator fatigue is not an issue. Weight is not an issue. The difference in accuracy at 75 or 50 yards or closer is not an issue. The stamped metal and rivets you diss the AK for are not an issue in survival. Kalashnikov's design just works. There's at least one KZitem video (or used to be) where a group of Iraq war veterans express their preference for the AK. If you're drilling into concrete you don't use an 18v. DeWalt drill driver. You use a corded 120v. Harbor Freight hammer driver. You use the best tool for the job no matter the cost or the weight.

Just wanted to thank you for being one of the only people i have seen to admit big city living means doom in a SHTF situation. It also effects which firearm is ideal. I was in a gun shop a few years back watching a guy from the suburbs wanting a long range rifle. The owner of the shop almost had him convinced to buy a barret m99 50bmg until i chimed in. I simple ask how far is the farthest point you can see from your front door and back door. After a luttle conversation about what was the most realistic "long range" shot he would be taking he he decided that a 308 was more what he needed. The clerk was mad but in truth he was selling him an expensive waste for his situation. That might be something to bring up in you gun shop videos. What about the AR-style chambered in 7.62X39? I'm an AK man so most of my ammo is AK standard. I purchased my third AR-styled rifle, (receiver broke in half on one) chambered in standard AK. It is a joy to shoot and is VERY accurate out to 100 yards. I have not stretched it out because of no room to fire 300 yards. I'd like to try my rainbow chambered AR-styled rifle at distance, but we do what we CAN do. Also, the .223 IS WAAAAY TO FAST OF A ROUND FOR ME! I like something traveling a little slower because of the ".45 ACP" style impact. My first .223 PENETRATED 1/4" plate steel @ 50 yards. It goes so fast through a non-kill area that the person doesn't know they are hit sometimes! Like a 9mm! Self defense rounds start with a .4, IMHO !!! Great vids man, keep em going. Please don't flag mine!!!...LOL!

If I had to bug out I would take a Lever action Marlin 94 with buckhorn sights in .357/.38 special with a GP 100 Ruger Revolver six inch barrel in the same calibers. 150 yd. accuracy on the rifle and I have taken down a large carnivore at sixty yards with a single round from the pistol. All the high capacity semi-autos are fine, but I believe these guns would be reliable much longer. If you are bugging out, you should be seeking to get away from large crowds and not need huge capacity firearms! However, at age 75, I plan on staying at home! That, my friend, is an entirely different story ! Thank you for producing quality common sense videos!! Keep them coming! P.O.

When people speak of accuracy I have to ask is it the gun or the shooter. I have heard a 100 times Glocks and AK are not accurate but in my experience the put the bullet right where I aim, That being said it might not be where I wanted it but this is not the matrix its going where it was aimed.

Depends on the terrain you are operating in. In an urban area the AK, in a suburban/hilled/wooded area, the AR. In open country, the SCAR. My go to rifle is my Ruger SR-762, as I live in open country, and it is only 1.5 lbs heavier than an AR. If you are expecting extreme long term you cannot go wrong with the AR. I just prefer the .308 true battle rifle, but a lighter choice than the SCAR, and one that uses more standard magazines.

AR-15, because since the military wouldn't have been effective against stopping the zombie apocalypse, but somehow I was able to survive, I would have plenty of mags and ammo to just pick up off the streets, not to mention spare parts. Also a Beretta M9 pistol, for the same reasons previously listed, unless it has occurred after the full transition to the M-17 pistol, then I would have one of those. There was sprinkling of an. A sprinkling of the galil. A sprinkling of my choice - the DSA fn fal para carbine. There was no concensus. I would buy any rifle in any caliber that could literally do it all because you cannot hump three weapons with mags and. Ammo without dying. I just want to perfect all around rifle. I like the Galil Ace in 5.56. I like the 16” barrel folding stock para carbine fal from DSA. IF I HAD TO SAY WHAT I WOULD TAKE IF I COULD FIND ONE FOR LESS THAN THE PRICE OF A FUNCTIONING KIDNEY IT WOULD BE A GALIL ACE IN 5.56

Little late to the parade here. But honestly, in zombie situation, you are much better off as a raider/marauder than a righteous domicile protector. Because realistically, if you house doesn't have really (and I mean REALLY) good passive defense (in other words if zombies can come to your front door), or you inside some heavy walled compound with few hundred armed people, you dead within minutes of any formidable assault. AR 100% of the time. If you have a working brain stem, you can repair almost anything on your own AR. The parts are cheap, the ammo is cheap, anybody can use it, it is light, and the ammo is light. During Vietnam, the 1st Air Cav standard load-out for the M14 was 200 rounds of .308. When they switched to the M16, the load-out was 500. That is 2 1/2 x the ammo load. It is NOT EVEN CLOSE. Add to that trying to follow-up shots with a .308 as compared to a .223, it is comedy. If you demand a longer range option, just pick some dude in your squad to have a longer barrel or an AR chambered in 6.5 Grendel, it is better than .308 anyway. The AK is not a good idea. You can't fix it yourself, it has a cumbersome manual of arms, it is heavy, ammo is less available, range is limited, accuracy is weaker, and you look like a commie/the enemy. . . which is enough reason to avoid it.

Hmm decisions.
@kingbaldwiniv5409

@@The_SmorgMan, a .223 is a great round against cougars or wolves. Velocity against tissue really will do a number on a relatively soft target. Against the bear, you are right, I would prefer a larger caliber. That being said, 30 rounds of 223 does not make a happy bear. It is not what I would hunt a bear with, but I would feel relatively confident in the brush. A .308 would be alright, but that starts asking the question what platform do you want to run that caliber from? I would prefer to build my own AR-10 to using or buying a SCAR 17. You could make a pretty nice AR-10 for well under $1,500.

May have 15k rounds through it? I replaced the extractor once. Maybe it was built on a Wednesday? Anyway...it's been super reliable and accurate enough to get the job done if need be. Hopefully not though. I have an AR too. I've never had any problems with it. It's just not...it won't shoot cheap ammo reliably steel mostly but it doesn't like reload brass sometimes either. After I compared the accuracy results of my AK47 against my AR15 I knew I had to make a change. So I built a AR47 using the corrects components. Most important was the longer firing pin called "enhanced". Then only using C-Products mags for positive feeding. To date zero problems. Now this proved accuracy the problem with AK47's is the rifle itself. Now I have the accuracy of the AR platform with the very hard hitting cheap 7.62x39 ammo. Using SP ammo my AR47 is death on wild boars with one shot. Out to 100 m the Russian round shoots as good as the .223 with much more punch !

AK any day over any other rifle. When an A/R has a catastrophic failure you might as well toss it and use a stick, same with the SCAR. An AK having a catastrophic failure isn't likely, not saying it never happens but it don't happen often, AK's are accurate but many people do not properly sight them in or don't sight them in at all and lastly they don't practice enough to shoot accurately or proficiently with one. If the end of the world is happening I want a rifle that is as utilitarian as possible, not just something that shoots but can also be used to beat someone to death. It may weigh a little more but carry around magazines of 308 ammo and you'll find out very quickly which weighs more. The AK much like a Glock is easy to use, maintain, doesn't require specialty tools to take apart or have a bunch of little parts that can be easily lost which are also subject to breaking or failure. There is a reason why the US military has a multi-million dollar support system in place for the M-4 wherever our troops are deployed, the enemy doesn't have one because they don't need one. I only recommend imported ex combloc AK's as American AK's suck because companies do not want to spend the money to acquire the proper tooling and technology to manufacture them correctly... Most everything negative thing you stated about the AK is what is called internet myth repeated over and over by lemmings...

Why would you wander in a SHTF scenario? Realistically, your best chance for survival is to make friends with your local community before a crisis, finding like-minded individuals, learning your neighbor's strengths and weaknesses, and staying put during a SHTF scenario. You may need to centralize the community into a more defensible location (many apartment complexes actually make for good fortress templates), but the key is to organize your community into a self-sufficient coalition of free people. Zombie apocalypse is highly unlikely, but an EMP (be it man made or result of a huge solar flare) is far more likely. In the event of an EMP, yes, electronic-free sights (irons, non-illuminated, or Tritium) will be king. You'll also want hard copies of survival manuals/guides, as well as having actually practiced their teachings prior to SHTF. One thing I've learned so much from playing DayZ is that too many people don't know how to use a paper map and compass, or even navigate by stars, moon, or sun. Heck, many people don't even know how to setup a sun dial, which is one of the easiest to make clocks in existence. Another thing people are often astounded by (no joke, my non-survivalist friends act like this is a super power when I do it) is the ability to make cordage/rope from plant fibers. From fine threads to heavy duty rope, most environments provide you with all the building materials you need, assuming you know how to identify and use them. I suppose what I'm saying is to maximize survival in SHTF scenarios, make friends in advance, learn and practice the old ways, fortify, and become strong enough as a community to be able to take in outsiders who wish to join, or at least wish to do trade. Communities that become trading hubs typically are worth more - even to raiders and bandits - than wee little hold-out cells. Humans achieve greatness through organized communities that promote capitalism and liberty, not tribal war bands lorded over by tyrants.

Would an EMP or solar flare fry battery-operated devices that are not grounded to anything? If so, then even battery-operated radios would become useless. Since this isn't the case (as pretty much every civil defense manual advises keeping a battery-operated radio handy), battery-operated holographic or red dot sights should be fine. Getting new batteries in a survival situation would be an issue, though. As for your associates not knowing how to use a paper map and compass, I guess you must mostly hang out with people born in the late '90s or early 2000s who don't have military backgrounds. Those of us who grew up with rotary-dial phones and CRT monitors are used to paper maps and compasses! As for sundials, why would you need one in a survival situation? If you need to know the exact time of day for whatever reason, you can wear a wristwatch, like some of us still do even nowadays. Watch batteries last for years, and there are even automatic, self-winding watches that keep time reasonably well. But I can't see why in the absence of modern society, you'd really care whether it was 1:37 or 12:37 when you can easily tell whether it is early morning, afternoon, late afternoon, evening, etc. by looking at the sky and ambient light. Finally, I don't think that capitalism and liberty would be significant concerns in a SHTF situation for a long time, or even ever again (depending on how bad the collapse is). Your ideals are noble, but in a Hobbesian state of nature of "all against all," the main concern will be simply surviving another day, or perhaps the week at most. Those who thrive will be those who are most willing and able to use force to take what they want and/or need. Society, or what passes for it in such a situation will more likely resemble feudal Europe during the so-called "Dark Ages" than any libertarian utopia. Since you won't be able to trust anyone outside your immediate community (and probably not even the people within it 100%), and since long-distance travel will be extremely difficult, your community will have to be self-sufficient. You can't build a capitalist society without free trade.

lol here in Canada it's SKS or SMLE. Every gun guy here has at least one of those, and they for the most part are effective weapons. Maybe not on a modern battlefield, but we are talking end times. Hell they are still better than nothing on a modern battlefield too. Saw some guys over in Ukraine running around with an SKS not too long ago. Probably dead or in prison now, but still. Edit- or of course an old 12 gauge preferably pump so you can use all types of ammo even homemade ammo using blackpowder or something that wouldn't work in any higher pressure type gun.

Sweet spot is the Arsenal 5.56 AK. Reliability of the AK platform while accepting AR mags, i.e. the most common ammunition in the United States. Plus it's only 7 pounds, which is heavier than most AR15s, but is pretty light by AK standards.
