Before the AFL, there was the VFL, and also the VFA - the league the VFL had spawned from, which was clinging for dear life after the VFL tried to destroy them. The VFA couldn't beat the VFL at their own game...so the VFA decided to beat them with their own game, creating new rules that sped up the play and brought in new fans. Surely, this would be the victory the VFA needed. Nothing could go wrong now...
In this 9-part series, the GAZ-man explores the full history of how the AFL came to be the massive empire it is today. Part 5 covers the time period from 1929 to 1955 - the Schism between the two big Victorian leagues that not only caused further cracks int he rivalry between the two leagues, but stopped the game from going global - and also allowed the other state leagues to catch up.
