Excellent video, thank you! My butternuts have done the opposite of every video I’ve watched. Mine had only females blooms at first. 😳 The males weren’t blooming. I had lots of male blooms open on my pumpkins, so the bees decided they’d be the surrogate father of my first two butternuts. 😂😎🥳🤣 The male butternut blooms have since caught up, but in reality, the bees are the boss. They go back & forth between the pumpkin and butternut blooms. I have no need to hand pollinate, because the squash bees are incredibly proficient at their job!!! It’s amazing to watch! I won’t know who the father of my butternuts are unless I grow the seeds next season or Maury Povich tells us. 🤣😉😂

Pick them when the outside looks like pale blue-gray , skin should be hard and firm. Your fingernail should not be able to go in that easy , I believe another way if the stem of the fruit should be dried up.. When you harvest these squash I believe you have to cure them. You helped this first time gardener a lot. I was able to get fruit but the butternut squash seems to stop growing at 4-5” in length. It’s still in the 90s and the plant endured a hot summer since July. The vines are picked clean of leaves half way up and vines are grey/dry in areas. I have been self pollinating. Are they slow growers? They are already tan in color and not sure if too soon to pick that small
@Greentgarden
15 күн бұрын
Sorry to hear that but with a 90° that's too hot for butternut squash. So the stress on the plant level it's a bit higher and could cause your fruit to stun the growth .. Unfortunately, it might not keep growing. Once it start getting the tan color it means it's begin. It's ripening process. Normally this happen when you reach it full size but due to the weather this could cost a problem.. Soon as the weather drops a bit in the '70s to '80s you're going to get a better growing production. Overall. Just keep up with your fertilizer in the water in... Hi @greentgarden I have a serious issue with my squash. As of 1 month ago, I am growing a single butter baby squash variant in a 5 gallon bucket on my outside window terrace. My bucket has good drainage, sits in some wood planks to keep it from the hot metal grates, has new soil, and has been fertilized with organic vegetable fertilizer. The plant gets full sun from roughly 8AM-5PM (about 8-9hrs). I've been watering deeply every other day. I have two successful fruits growing at the bottom of the plant. I have pruned it so that all of the nutrition is going to one single vine. On that vine, for the last two weeks all of the new female flowers/buds have come on strong then yellowed and died. I am getting male flowers coming in every 2-3 days (lots of them). However, I lost about 10-12 female buds in a row and have not been able to produce a 3rd fruit. Please let me know your thoughts on why this may be happening and if I can do anything to help the plant.
@Greentgarden
3 ай бұрын
I am very sorry to hear that you sound like you got everything about right.. The only thing I would think about is the calcium. Believe it or not the plant is lack of calcium It could cause the fruit to turn yellow before opening.... The other thing is just watering .. And if the temperature is way too hot sometimes it could stress the plant out And this is the other reason why You're having this problem.. . I would say increase your calcium a bit and try to control the water and hopefully the weather gets better. Give it some time it should get better 🙏🏾🌱

How to know when to harvest pumpkins. Thanks in advance
@Greentgarden
Күн бұрын
So when it comes to pumpkin it all depends on the variety. Some of them change colors. Some of them are big but the one thing you have to look for is When the rind is hard and doesn't dent when you press your fingernail into it .. Also when the stream next to the pumpkin head turns dry up ...
@KishorTwist
8 күн бұрын
Mid-October should be respectable in most zones to harvest butternuts, I think? Stems on mine don’t seem to want to dry up, shrivel and turn brown. The rind is tan and nail-resistant too… I cautiously cut one and the one-inch stem leaked a few drops of water… 🤔
@Greentgarden
8 күн бұрын
So basically the plant is slowly fully ripen up the butternut squash that's already thrown 10. What you could do is cut an inch above the tan butternut squash and leave it by your window or outside for about 2 weeks out. It will rip and cure perfectly... With the weather changing or even insects attacking the plant, it will stress out the plant and basically slow down the production

We grow Butternut Squash and Sugar Baby Pumpkins every year. The bonus in planting these 2 varieties is you can save, and roast the seeds for snacking on. Also, they're both heirloom plants, meaning you can dry and save the seeds for planting next year. If saving seeds to plant, always save from the biggest and ripest gourds. Doesn't hurt to test plant a few in doors next spring to test germination. If they do germinate and you time it right when it's time for planting, you're good to go to transplant. TYFS

Sorry to hear , are the leaves dying because the weather is too cold ? Sometimes check for squash bugs. They love butternut squash leaves... So if all the leaves are dying and the plant looks like it's going to die, you might just have to harvest the butternut squash and leave it by your window or countertop... If they're small, you could still eat them, but they would not have the same taste as when they're fully ripen..
