Last years crops I emptied out my pots and then replanted 3 big ones in second week of August & two medium pots a week later, I just let them go on through the winter and I had potatoes 🥔 which I only took out of the pots in middle of January and then the third week of February, and they were perfect 👌🏼 I've still got 2 lbs left and I might use them for the same thing this year 🤔👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Using the flask & tea bag method for chilli 🌶 seeds , I got 24 out of 24 come through and I've potted them up and are all going well 😋👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks for all that you do 🙏🙌🏼

I really like the ue of wood in most of what i do around the garden, i don't think there's anything better to bring in fungal life to soils. Great explanation. I have a question though if u don’t mind. I planted mine last week in buckets and used a bit of potato manure I bought from a shop. They have been kept in an unseated conservatory but I have noticed there is like a fungal bloom on the surface of the pots. It was new bought compost and it’s only occurred on the potatoes. Ever seen that?
@MyFamilyGarden
3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like poor ventilation causing the fungus to grow, it's not a problem because that fungus will help break down the compost further. If you don't like the look of it apply a layer of mulch over the top

Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to getting my garden going this year, including potatoes. Have you ever tried growing potaoes in double buckets? I've seen them with the inner bucket having sections cut out so you can lift it up and remove some potatoes through those openings and let the others grow. I don't see much on YT about it and wonder if those buckets are a gimmick. It would be nice to be able to pick a few at a time and not worry about storing all potatoes. And can you also just leave potatoes in some buckets after the plant dies back to store in situ?
@MyFamilyGarden
3 жыл бұрын
I've seen those types of planters but i've never tried them, the price tag put me off. I won't harvest these all at once, because of the way they have been planted i can lift some of the plants that are growing at the top lay and leave the bottom layer, or harvest a single pot every couple of weeks. Potaotes are best stored under ground as long as the soil doesn't freeze, then you can just pick as needed. Early varieties don't store as well
@judyofthewoods

@@MyFamilyGarden thanks. Yeah, expensive holes! I was thinking of using two regular buckets and cutting sections out of one. Sounds like there is no need by what you describe doing.

Where do you get your woodchips from? I’ve over ordered on the seed potatoe front in fact I’ve chatted about 18 potatoes in 5 varieties. I can’t really dig up the lawn so would you recommend the wood chip bed over loads of buckets and how much space would a potato bed take up for the amount of potatoes I have to sow... I know I’m asking a lot and I’ve watched loads of potato growers on her tonight, I’m putting my trust in you lol
@MyFamilyGarden

I get them from a local tree surgeon or make my own from prunings. For early varieties I don't think it matters but for maincrop woodchips are my preferred method. This video shows the size of bed I use kzitem.info/news/bejne/uoWH2H6vrKJ9fG0

Hello Mothin. Oh dear maybe I have made a mistake here. I always put my potatoes in the ground at the beginning of March, because we have a slightly warmer climate in Milton Keynes than up in Yorkshire. Watching you and following your advice I planted my spuds into 18” deep woodchip the first week of March. I made a hole and filled it with compost, I pushed the spuds into this then covered it with clippings. Oh and I planted 2nd earlies. Listening to you now I’m wondering if I have done it wrong. I don’t have any containers to grow spuds in.

Hi Graham, I wouldn't worry you're in a warmer climate and that woodchip bed will give them all the protection they need, I can't wait to see how your potatoes turn out

Hello Mothin. Thanks for the confidence vote. I forgot to mention that I made the woodchip bed in October and between then and planting in March I added a cocktail of rotted horse manure, Chicken Pellets and a good scattering of Potato Fertiliser once planted. The worms are loving it so I hope my spuds do too.

Hi Mothin. I planted Kestrel and Maris Piper. I have two experimental beds, the one with Kestrel had the cocktail added and Maris Piper is in the plain woodchip bed with a scattering of fertiliser. All experimental. This week I planted out All Year Round Cauliflower. White Round Cabbage and Pointed Cabbage (or Greens depends on where you come from). Last week I planted out Runner Beans. All beans and Brassicas are under plastic and fleece so well protected. I have Butternut Squash shouting at me to be planted out but in the past I have lost them through planting too early, first week of April will see those go in.
