Thank you so much . Please could you answer this question? Why don't we put "an" before "exceptional talent" in this sentence " He showed exceptional talent as a musician" ? Is talent here countable or uncountable and defined or not defined? And why? I am grateful for you
@oxfordenglishnow
2 жыл бұрын
Hi, talent can be both countable and uncountable. Her talent for music showed at an early age. Uncountable: Referring to talent as a general idea. His artistic talents were wasted in his boring job. Countable. Referring to specific talents. I hope this helps!

Why do we use an indefinite article 'an' with the word 'idea' despite it is a countable abstract noun? Should we use any article with abstract nouns? For example; 1) It sounds a good idea. 2) Our principal introduced an idea of online classes during pandemic.
@oxfordenglishnow
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Muhammad, we use an with idea because it has a vowel sound. However we say a good idea because it depends on the adjective used and here it is a consonant sound "g", so we use a. Hope that helps!

@oxfordenglishnow
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Roshini, yes, "I am looking forward to finishing my homework" is correct. Thanks for the suggestion for the lesson but I think the difference is simply the tense. Present versus present continuous. So the present tense is stating a fact and present continuous is talking about something that is happening now. I hope that helps!

Hi Ahmed, the answer is actually, "an unfair decision," because it is the adjective that dictates the use of a or an and here because it is a vowel it is an. Hope that helps!

An for vowels including H word which can be optional due to evolving pronunciation i.e. an 'otel or a hotel. Preferably the former.
@oxfordenglishnow
Жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. You can say "an historical event" or "a historical event". A hotel is correct, "an 'otel". could be heard in spoken English but would be seen as incorrect and I certainly wouldn't recommend it. I hope that helps!

I looked this video up as I have noticed over a year now that no one whether on KZitem, TV or in person is using the indefinite article "an" anymore when it is supposed to be used. They are instead just saying "a". Both academics and less educated people are all making this error for about a year now. To give an example "a" apple or "a" engineer is being said rather than "an" apple or "an" engineer. I think this is a new infiltration into the English language. I have only heard one person use the indefinite article correctly.
@oxfordenglishnow
Жыл бұрын
Oh interesting! Personally I just think it makes it easier to say and so comes quite naturally.
@alohaspirit1506

@@oxfordenglishnow Sorry, for not understanding your answer. What makes it easier to say "a" apple or "an" apple for instance? I think it's easier with "an" of course rather than using "a" making two vowel sounds which is not natural in my opinion.
