I've been trained never to cross the legs. When I throw a sideway kick, I bring the back leg to join the front one but I don't cross legs. He also mixes the sideway and back kicks. I will try it

But, it should be like he showed. I also learnt like that. It is called step inside side kick.

And again I agree with you Rod, this guy's style would get you hurt on the street...I notice in his other video's, his style is "Flawed"....

I train in Kenpo and we do both. What you’re describing sounds like what we call a step up sidekick, but we also do the crossing sidekick and roundhouse. We don’t cross our legs when we’re moving around/circling our opponent. What style do you train in?

Taekwondo's side kick and karate's side-thrust kick usually use the outside edge of the sole of the foot to kick the opponent. Side kick(also known as side-thrusting kick) applies the heel, or sole of the foot to kick the enemy heavily with the whole-body complete spiral shaking power(also called shocking power, short-distanced exploding power) in unarmed combat techniques of Chinese actual martial arts(a.k.a. actual gung-fu, actual Kung-fu) and freestyle fighting methods of Jeet Kune Do ( also called Original Jeet Kune Do now). 🐲🐉CAMA &JKD 💯💖🔋💥🔔💣🥊🥋🌎

The 90 degree foot is lacking in abrasive pressure comparatively to the semi-slanted (foot) side kick. Something to think about.

Kicking is not an asset to acquire. It is the foundation itself. So if you train and practice with novice and beginner you'll never pick this fact or law up.

In a real self defense situation the side kick would be useless. Because it's too easily jammed or countered...

There's more than one kind of side kick, and the ones he's showing is not for defense or distance control. The front foot side kick targeting your opponents legs is probably the quickest kick in martial arts and can jam just about any kick out there. You should check it out.
