This is true. I'm in my mid 50's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha..

Thank you again Katherine, this is helpful information. I can see so many pitfalls in this arrangement for my own circumstances, but I've also seen many friends who've successfully moved in to a granny flat arrangement and love every minute of it. As you say, legal and financial advice is crucial before entering into any family arrangement, and I personally don't want to subject my kids to the extra stress of this. The biggest problem I can see is the apparent permanence of this arrangement. If the kids want or need to move to a different town or state, where does that leave the 'granny'?

thanks Robyn, and I understand what you are saying, this option is not for everyone, but it will suit some. In relation to your last question, this is one of the examples of situation that needs to be agreed upon in the agreement, as it can create a major family issue if not openly discussed prior.

We retired 20+ years ago and live in North Queensland, all our family live in NSW, we left there that 20+ years ago for a "warmer" climate. There's no chance either of us want to live in the "cold" ever again. Our kids have made it clear they won't ever move up here, neither should they. No "Granny Flat" for us, either singularly or together.

So the title says 'When to use a Granny Flat arrangement and Why'. But you didn't tell us anything! You told us to go get advice. But that is why we came here to watch your video to get that advice. And get advice from whom? Who is reliable enough? We came here to get reliable advice. You've broken the 4 questions down into several components each, which turned each component into another set of questions. Seems never ending and therefore because the gov't is involved, it is turning into too much trouble. Easier to just rent somewhere, if people are lucky enough to get a rental, that is.

I find that happens a lot in the videos, seems to be a guidance only. Unless you want to take her on for your personal financial needs.
