Actually, at least in Portuguese, you can use the verb SER with those "ESTAR" verbs, and vice versa. Example... you can say you or someone else ESTÁ DIVERTIDO(a) if the person usually is not very fun, but it is AT THAT TIME. You can add a time delimiter for emphasis... like ESTÁ DIVERTIDO HOJE (today). If someone is ALWAYS sick, you can use the verb SER... Rodrigo É doente, instead of Rodrigo ESTÁ doente. Was just watching a sports program where a club that was having bad performances all season, had a very bad result yesterday, 4th consecutive 2-0 loss. The sports commentator said Mano Venker Menezes ESTAVA (estar)técnico do Internacional (coach of Internacional), when the verb used is usually É (ser), because they consider he is still coach only TEMPORARILY because of the derby next Sunday the team wouldn´t change the coach now.

When I was in High School I thought taking Spanish for one of my electives would be easy. Turns out I am not as fluent as I thought. I got a C in Spanish. How?? Grammar is a science. Spanish speakers in school always fall into that trap. English was no better. Most of my knowledge I learned in the county jail I. always asked the book keepers for three books: the Bible, a history book , and foremost. A current dictionary. Mucha gente indocumentada me pregunta si yo se hablar Ingles. Yo me quedo callado. Pero ellos me preguntan: "suficiente para defenderte?". Si. Yo les respondo

Just think about it like this: Ser is used for permanent things like personality and Estar is used for temporary things like your emotion. Example: Soy alto. Estoy feliz.
@magnumfire313

Maybe I can help you. I'm a portuguese native speaker, and we use the same verbs. "Ser" works like something eternal that can not change. Exemple: "My mother is a lovely person." We would use "ser" because my mother is always lovely. It is her characteristic. Or "I'm a doctor" Your knowledge in medicine is eternal, nobody can "unteach" your knowledge. Therefore, every You "ser" medic "Estar" means in the moment, it can change. Exemple "I'm proud of you" In this moment, I'm proud of your action, but you can make me feel otherwise after. "You are tired" Now you are tired, but after a rest You will be fine again. OK, BUT WTF DO WE NOT HAVE ONE SINGLE WORD FOR BOTH? Simple, diferente meanings. First exemple: "She is Happy" "Ela é feliz": "ser" means she is a kind of person that you see always Happy "Ela está feliz": She is Happy now, but I don't know who she will behave tomorrow. Second exemple: "Ele não está maluco, ele é maluco" If you translate literally, it would be like this "He isn't crazy, he is crazy".It doesn't make sense, but if you add some words, "He is not being now, HE IS CRAZY." know you get the right meaning.
