Lockers are a great tool, but the tendency today when learning how to drive offroad is to overuse them. I’ve wheeled with more than a couple folks that would automatically engage their rear lockers for any obstacle on the trail, regardless of actual difficulty. Lockers should only be engaged on the first attempt of an obstacle when failure would put your rig in danger or the more experienced trailer leader specifically says “you’ll need your lockers for this one.” For most situations, the emphasis should be on Technique Over Technology. Focus on things like line picking and wheel placement first and then use your lockers only if technique can’t get you over the obstacle.

I agree. I’m pretty new to off roading and I always try to hit a obstacle 2/3 times before I use the locker.

I'm trying to decide in getting lockers. I have a 2015 JKU Sport with 35's and a 2.5" lift. I go off-road but not so hard as to cause body damage. It is my daily driver. I am getting it re-geared to 4.88 and my mechanic said if I want to add lockers, now is the time to do it "while I'm in there". Price tag is $4200.00. Trying to decide if I would ever use lockers.

@@jeepinwithjulia the only way I would upgrade to lockers is if you had open diffs from the factory, which I doubt is the case. If you already have both axels as a limited slip set up i wouldn't put that kind of $'S in it for lockers. Although any kind of expensive upgrade will likely add to the resale value, but as far as off road performance in mud or snow I wouldn't do it.

The rear locker is best downhill , especially in firm slippery clay where the car wants to go sideways down hill , engage the rear locker only and the car will suddenly stabilise and feel like your dragging an anchor and go dead straight downhill ! Front is better going uphill than a rear , if you don’t need to steer, as a rear locker has the ability to pivot the car sideways here the front locker won’t

That's what I love about having ABS traction control on the Land Rover even from back in the year 2000 it still works great and it does its job well enough that I rarely have to engage a locker. It just immediately grabs the spinning wheel transfers a little torque pops you right out even before it becomes an issue 90% of the time. Like the Toyota guys with Atrac except we don't have a name for it and can't turn it off which you don't really want to it works perfectly. I'd hate to have just open or locked lol

With experience comes a better understanding of what you will need. I usually suggest that new comers spend their money on equipment that protects the vehicle before going to lockers. Better bumpers, a modest lift, slightly taller tires, recovery equipment, spare gas can carriers, air compressor, rock sliders, and by the time they have worn out their first set of tires, maybe a wench. As you get better as a driver, you may want to try tougher trails. Don't go alone. If your vehicle can't keep up with better equipped vehicles it might be time to do axle work. Until then, just learn your jeeps limits and your own before spending thousands of dollars to upgrade to stronger axles, expensive traction aids, and upgraded steering components.

I use Torsen limited-slip differentials in my F150 both front and rear and they work great. I use them for both off-road and On-Road with Snow, Mud, Sand, and Limited Rock Crawling. They work great for what i need if you want an Automatic function in your Diff. As they are a Geared-Type Limited Slip.

My work on pipeline s can put me in technical situations but other than that I just needed to get rid of, the no good open diff. This video now makes it seems like I may have overkilled.

2 thumbs up on this one. Since you cover more than strictly off-road and touch on weather driving conditions occasionally. How about a comparison with Torsen type diffs with advantages and disadvantages for both off-road and bad weather.

At one time the front axle had a slightly lower gear ratio then the rear. This was to compensate for the rest trying to push the front axle forward. It was the advent of AWD when it changed.

Like you said depends on the terrain. Me I am poor so I went with Lincoln lockers front and rear on my YJ still have the disco on the d30 cable actuated. But I do mostly rock crawling. Running 33s and just broke an axle on the d35 so upgrading it to 8.8 with a mini spool. Stay safe man and happy trails 👣

I've got a tj with a lunchbox in the rear it's best for going through obstacles rather than climbing over them as it's in the rear. It's biggest help is in the mud where I've been saved countless times by being able to pin it and go sideways or straight until I get out of the obstacle.

Thanks for the video! Just wondering what you would do in a snowy situation on a paved road going uphill and approaching a 80 degree turn in the road. Adding to this there is a bit of a steep hill behind you if you lose traction after the turn. Most of the time I'd park at the bottom of the hill but am curious what you would recommend if I have both front and rear lockers and when to engage them.

@RollingRigTraction

@@musterjedi I personally would prefer a locker than just an LSD however at times I wish I only had an LSD vs locker. When I drive in 3" of snow without 4WD engaged in my '93 Explorer the back always seems to spin off to right so I need to engage the 4WD to get anywhere. I drove a Duramax dual axle tow truck and after putting an LSD in it(boss broke an axle and chewed up the diff so bad we swapped another axle he had from a matching truck that rolled over. Dude was an idiot! He pulled a bunch of brake parts etc from that axle, then with both axle shafts removed from the diff he towed the rear end through a muddy lot and packed the diff with mud. I swapped his axle in late December in the cold and had to clean out the internals as best as possible! Anyway it handled better than the previous open diff but it also never walked out to the right in the snow. Anyway, I would bet that the ECTED unit would be a better option than a factory unit as they're not going to lock up as tightly, they generally leave performance on the table for drivability and noise. I have a Ford Traction Lol diff from a :91 Eddie Bauer Explorer I intend to swap into a Bronco II or just swap it into my stock '93 Explorer which has the same gearing but open diff. I know as compared with the factory clutch pack there are carbon disc upgrades for the clutch which will give a better lockup than factory pack and greater longevity. I know with the mileage that '91 truck had I bet the LSD clutches wore out 300,000 miles before I parted the thing out. Those Explorers are workhorses. That body easily had 500,000 miles or more on it. On the engine we stuffed in it when I bought it for parts for my modded '93 Explorer had been overheated to death. It came from an Aerostar van, I still have the engine, probably will do a valve job and keep it as a spare. Any LSD is better than open diff, I plan to use the current limited slip after a $150 carbon clutch pack, instead of go straight to another locker. I run auto lockers Auburn front Detroit rear. They came with the truck I traded straight across my '89 Bronco II Eddie Bauer for a '93 Explorer with 9" lift on 35's, I wanted more room and an extra seat!. Maybe consider if it's not already got carbon clutches to upgrade and see how it performs. Or try the ECTED which gives you both.

What I've noticed is that in most cases its nice to have a non selectable in the rear cuz it engages when you need it and not when you don't( if you have the right one. But for up front I'd 100 percent recommend a full selectable for up front because of turning. You'd use the front locker less that if you have both selectable as the way the car moves is different with a self locking.
