Why did the dog jump at the kids in first place tho...?? I own a big powerful dog, I wouldn't allow my dog to jump at kids.
@MaxtheGentleGiant

In one of the old comments, I have shared my point of view on why he jumped. If you see in slow motion first the younger kid made a chirping sound. And at the same time the older one took his left hand out from behind his back which was hidden behind the towel. These two things happened simultaneously at the eye level of Max. It triggered a protection response. If you follow IGP, the decoys don’t move at all. And the dogs are trained to attack the suit the moment they move even if the owner doesn’t say. That’s what they are supposed/trained to do. 🐶

@@graysontheginger I'm 40 and we have had GSD in my family before i was born. Right now i have a 2 year old pure bread male and i could be in that elevator with him without a leash and he would pay no attention to those kids. GSD have a very sharp sense of protecting. Overely sharp sense i would like to add. This is something that needs to be dialed down from an early stage. They need to know that you are the boss and you do not need protection unless you say so. You must socialize them from when they are pups. Meet many new people, in that way they will not see a new person as a automatic potential threat or be overly excited. The fact that you excuse this lunging and barking behaviour as playful/curious is very problematic because these are people this dog has never seen before and that behavior is unacceptable. If it was towards someone he knows alot and got excited then that's another story. If you want the perfect protection killer dog, get a GSD and do exacly the oppostive of what i wrote. My grandfather also had GSD dogs that was purely for protecting certain areas, they were not pets and not even me could go into those areas alone as a child. Only my grandfather and his wife and son could do that. They are literally born to protect and serve and they absolutely need guidance to understand what their role is.

Just a tip: body management in space is crucial for dogs' communication. It would have sent a better message to the dog if the person would have been between him and the kids. Keeping the dog near the wall, and either facing the kids or being side to side with the dog. So you are saying "I deal with it, it's not your job now". It is not a great effort to practice such tools we have, and can help to set the situation clearer so that the dog is less prone to feel that he has to act somehow towards whatever is the "issue" in that moment. Also patting/caressing a dog has values, of course. Better to do when it can't be mistaken for "yes, please, keep managing this problem, I rely on you". Not for saying this was poorly managed, at all. I have seen oblivious people having no clue about their dogs and this is not the case, I just wish to provide useful tips.

@@Sheppart92I was going to say there is a few reasons why your dog cried/whined on the leash, it could be from nerves (which you could tell if it was nerves due to body language such as a tucked tail, shivering, and resistance), could be from excitement, and could be from pain. The only way to train out fears is putting them in that situation and using positive reinforcement (like redirecting and/or ignoring) and being confident in yourself. I don’t know much about Jack Russell’s, but because they’re a small dog breed, I’m not surprised. Not targeting you individually, but a lot of people will give up training or just not put any effort into their small dog because “they won’t hurt anybody.” And I completely understand how dog training isn’t available or affordable for everybody, which means it’s your responsibility to do it at home. Just for future reference, if you plan on getting another dog in the future, make sure you don’t get a puppy from a sketchy breeder (BYB, Puppymills) and don’t skimp out on training. Some dogs are naturally anxiety-prone and scared, but a lot of it is just a result of being babied and not socialized.

I was out for a run a couple of days ago and passed a lady with a German shepherd, by the side of the road. She was having conversation with someone on his property across the ditch. None of them seemed aware of me as I approached, so I took a wide berth so as not to get within lunging range. Good call. As soon as the dog became aware of me he came at me, spinning the lady around. She had his leash with both hands and both feet dug in - it was all she could do to hold him back while he tugged and leapt and barked with murder in his eyes. I have no doubt if he'd managed to get loose, I'd have paid a hefty price. Kudos to the lady for holding him back, but it sure sucks to have your life threatened while you're just out getting some exercise, on a public street, as is my right. I believe that allowing that kind of reactions from a dog especially a german shepherd can one day lead to a horrible disaster. Dogs should be taught that agressive behaviours are not acceptable at all, even on a walk. And i’m speaking from experience, as I own a german shepherd as well. When you allow situations like this happen they will happen more, especially in situation like this where none of the kids tried to approach the dog. You did good by stopping max from jumping but next it happens don’t pet him because he will understand it as reward for doing something good, I recommend using command “no” and order them to sit by your leg. It worked with my dog, and let me tell you at start he was very aggressive, because he spend life on a chain but now he’s just a cuddly fluff and very social. I’m glad you reacted so quickly and didn’t let the dog approach the kids when they were visibly nervous, too many times I had to train a dog that was supposedly “agressive” when the problem was with the owner not controlling they’re pet’s behaviour. :3

Just so everyone knows, German shepherd are not mean. They are very loyal to their owners. If they are socialized as puppies, and trained right,they are not aggressive. Lovely looking dog, looks like a bit of a negative feedback loop going on though. He thought you were afraid of the other people because you were on edge anticipating the lunge. Pulling him close but with him in front is a defensive position too. The best way to ride an elevator with a big dog is with them along the left or right side facing the door and you to the middle to control him with your hips, body, eye contact and head scratches. Stay chill and don't tense up and he will follow your lead. Long time GSD owner my old guy now is 12. When he was young he was excitable too, especially with high pitched kids. Rethinking and using body positioning to your advantage helps you not get tense pulling against him, helping him stay calm, which will help you stay calm, which will help him stay calmer.

I went into an elevator with two friends once and whe had traveling bags so it was already pretty crowded... And this stupid guy entered with his staff/pit. I could see that the dog wasn't confortable with it but the owner didn't care and no one wanted to tell him to leave. The door closed and the dog started breathing heavily. I made the mistake to look him in the eyes because i wanted to be sure he was ok, he lunged at me on the spot. Fortunatly my bag and, to a lesser extent, the leash stopped him. The door opened at this moment and this guy left without saying a fkin word. Now let me say one thing, i don't blame the dog or even the breed since i also have a dog and know how they think and react. I’m also a owner of a German shepherd and also a Belgian malinois and to be honest this dog his reaction was not friendly neither out of exciting it was inappropriate. Could be out of fear others would say not trained well but my dogs are also not trained but they never react like that around children and they don’t mind children who they don’t know pet them or play with them . The elevator is a small place and there is no way out so my guess is the dog got kind of stressed in this situation due to the fact he has to deal with more people ( possible threats in such a small place and no way to escape ) you know what they say when you put a dog or other animal in a corner and he feels threatened he will defend himself .

Sometimes both dogs and kids can behave in a way to make each other feel threatened. My dog is small, not even 5kg, but kids in the apartment are scared of him. Why? Because their grandma was scared. Kids learn from seeing and they had no fear of my dog while their mother was watching them, then the maternity leave was over and the grandmas began switching watch duty. One grandma was terrified of dogs and I soon noticed the kids would jump in fright when he barked, just like their grandma would. My dog has never jumped or lunged at anyone, he just barks because he is scared of strangers, especially kids. The worst he has done was mouth a cousin's arm, and that cousin was the reason my dog is scared of kids- he chased him and threw rocks at him. My dog never bit him despite all that, but since my uncle wouldn't do anything about his son's behaviour, I took that role. Kid never bothered my dog again. He learned pretty quickly that chasing and hitting my dog would mean a big ol smack style Getro Gibbs on the back of the head. So yeah, my dog barks because kids scare him and kids are scared because my dog barks. A cursed cycle that must be broken.

Appreciate you holding him tight but, there's a better way. In an elevator or any place where people are coming in. You stand between your dog and the people. Make your dog sit or lie down the entire time so he is in a relaxed and non threatening position. Relax and breath. If you wish to engage in conversation engage and be calm. If not be polite but, keep your attention on what you focus on and unworried about the other people. Your dog will react and read people based off your attitude and positioning. There should be no reason your dog should lunge or get startled when you are in control. If you are worried about him around people then you need to train it out of him. And, practice practice practice. Great dog. Just practice the little things.

The owner was aware of possible reaction, and hence I guess the short leash from the beginning, a great thing to do. I have a Rottie who gets spooked easily, hence I make it a point to be between him and the person. Guard dogs have a tendency to face the unknown person, with their back at owner and act on their own. If you put yourself between the dog and the person, one you act as a physical barrier, and second even the person feels a bit relaxed. PS: I didn’t know you could use your kid as a shield🤣

This is nothing more than a storm in a tea cup. The owner of the dog knew what to expect when the children entered the lift and controlled the situation by hauling him in close. A responsible dog owner that didn’t allow his dog to get out of control. Just like humans, not all dogs like children that they don’t know and are wary of them, especially within an enclosed environment like this. It’s down to the owner to recognise these types of problems quickly and mitigate them immediately, which is exactly what he did. Bravo to the owner of the dog and I wish more dog owners would do the same. When you learn that all dogs are predictably unpredictable you will always be safe.

Thats true..but you cannot just rely on that theory... See the way Max look them when they enter the lift. It just trigger a tread by them standing in the corner.. "Alpha male lead the pack" And you put Max infront of you. You put him in the situation to lead you and thats just what he did...trying to attack..for the safety of the pack. If you put yourself between your dog and those other passenger..i think things will be different..cause big Max will understand that you can are the Alpha and that you are in control... Just sayin.... Putting a leash on your dog neck dont mean that you are the Alpha.. It just help you to pull you dog when needed...

Actually, the dog was triggered by the intense stares of the kids... You can see this sort of behavior even with puppies, when one stares at others, one of them is going to launch, to play. Staring challanges a puppy or even dogs to take action. As puppy's turn into dogs they learn social skills, with shepherds they often also learn how to control a certain situation. This situation in a confined room, with those kids and the mother staring at him (most certainly also releasing hormones that could irritate the dog as well), must have been very irritating for the dog. Being so close to his owner, must have built up extra tension for the dog. Though I have to say what the handler did here after, was right. He told him that his behavior wasn't wanted in this situation and that the handler had it under control, nothing bad would happen to either of them. In order to prevent this situation, the handler could have interacted with his dog when the young family entered. That could have been talking, feeding, turning the dogs attention towards himself, maybe (only if the dog is up for it!) petting the dog or give the dog a command like 'sit' or giving them a toy. Additionally, talking to the thing the dog is spooked of helps a lot. It shows the dog beforehand that the handler has the situation fully under control. There are many different types and approaches to train, socialize and desensitice a dog. All of them have their pro's and con's. The cons of telling a dog "this behavior was not wanted" like the owner did were the emotional scare that the family got and that for a short time, the dog was irritated. The pro's of it, are that (since it was done so clearly and you can see that the dog relaxed a little afterwards), it's very effective in this type of situation and the dog know's there's going to be consequences to this type of behavior in situations like that one. No one got physically hurt.

@Bigger Issues the dog wasn't growling or nothing. also, the kids and the mom were staring at the dog, so he thought they wanted to play with him or pet him. he was not being aggressive. and if the owner said that, that means it's true. dont doubt the owner just because u dont believe it because the dog would be growling.

I don't think he would have attacked anyone, but he was nervous - as was the handler/dog walker - making him even more nervous. If the handler thought he 'wanted to play' (like some commented), why did he hold his ear as he left the elevator? It was to have additional control of him so he wouldn't jump at the kids as he passed - which were making him nervous, because they were scared and making shrill sounds. My dog also gets very nervous around people who are afraid of him - if you're confident, he's fine. But if he senses fear, he starts barking - as Max did. I can't believe the owner of the dog actually posted this.

According to Ceaser Milan you never stare at a dog if it did not smell you yet. You are still a stranger, an unknown threat, if it did not smell you. That means you let the dog smell your genital area. Owners don't allow this to happen, so I let dogs smell me as much as they can. The dog can see eye contact as a challenge. Once dog smells anus or genitals, eye contact is okay. Also, you never walk towards a dog. You are saying to the dog that you see the dog as the leader or higher than you in some way. You leave yourself to the mercy of the dog. You always let a strange dog come to you first, without eye contact.
@patphatkitten
2 жыл бұрын
@@ruh-roh9472 the dog needs chance to smell the kids genital area or anus, and the kids can't make eye contact untill this is done. This is not socially acceptable though . See books and videos by Ceaser Millan. After I used his info, I no longer had trouble with dogs while making deliveries. Milan has changed my life at work. I was almost mauled by dogs several times. Owners don't know the true nature of their dogs towards people or strange children, toddlers playing by themselves. Dogs are still pack hunters. Nothing is going to change that.
