The sooner we leave the better. Imagine all the problems with living on Mars. We humans aren't adapted to that environment; however, over the span of generations, we might engage in artificial selection of our own genes to bridge that gap. Given that it'll take decades to complete such a monumental project, we ought to begin immediately. Even if the initial settlers die shortly upon arrival, the observations that come with making such a harrowing trek would be invaluable.

More than just doing a series on population, may a I suggest a series on resource management and distribution. Effective yield vs use of out current natural resources. In addition to production efficiency and distribution of production around the world. Who controls, manufactures, and controls the distribution of most critical resources for our current systems of consumption. Everything from rare metals to agricultural production to distribution. Technology that is being developed to effectively multiply both diversity and distribution. The security of our food source and political control behind it.. Space travel is done by: 1 telepresence (robotics); 2 Spartan manned missions; 3 genetic modification, tailoring the human to the enviro. I imagine the future will be a spectacular blend of all three!! Either way- the stepping stones to these sciences will be found on the moon. Exciting times indeed! Great show!!

Hello Trace, your entire discussion assumes the human race will exist long enough to develop interstellar travel. And, considering the Sun has several more billion years of existence before exhausting its life sustaining energies, it is absolutely nonsensical to make it part of the discussion for humanity leaving Earth. There is great doubt that humankind will even exist in only a few hundred thousand years from now. It's not just the ability to travel among the stars in a space ark, but it would also necessitate the ability to travel at the speed of light, or greater. Also, who would be among the chosen few to seek out brave new worlds, to boldly go where no one has gone before, as far as we know? Would there be a national and world wide lottery? Would the average citizen even be included, or just the elite scientist and their ilk? Who gets left behind to face the Earth's end? Or deemed unworthy to spread his or her seed in space? Should the day ever come, it will not be a pretty picture. And, who says humanity is worth saving? Who would welcome a species that murders it's own members, hates, and discriminates against its own kind? We first need to evolve intellectually, and away from superstitions and false beliefs. Only then will we as a species survive, and have a chance for our star trek across the Universe.
@Psydestr

Exactly what I was thinking, there are so many problems before adopting to a new environment. How will we get there, who will fund it, who will go, and if we ever leave, will we have enough fuel to keep going without running out. It is pretty unlikely that we will find a solution in our life time even before we go.

Not that I have any special knowledge on the subject, but I am certain humanity will not exist in 7 billion years. We will most likely cease to exist as a species in just I million years or far, far less. If, we are to develop the technology for interstellar travel, it will likely be in the next I to 2 hundred years. But, that is predicated upon the fact that we don't destroy ourselves and the Earth, which is the more likely outcome.

To correct you: You said that Mars isn't big enough to hold onto an atmosphere, but that's not true at all. Case in point, pluto has an atmosphere similar to Earth that's 80% nitrogen and it's smaller than Earth's moon. Clearly size isn't the important factor here. In fact, based on this and the composition of Earth's moon, it's actually possible that Earth's moon had an atmosphere before tidal locking kicked in this preventing any additional heat from being added to it's core. Once the magnetic field shut down, if any atmosphere did ever form, it would have been stripped away very quickly. The reason why Mars doesn't have an atmosphere, and pluto does, despite both lacking a magnetic field, is that mars is closer to the sun and more exposed to solar winds.

Traces wrong about the Goldilocks zone requiring that a planet has liquid water as opposed to frozen water. If we have a plentiful energy source, we can go to any planet that has frozen water. We can heat up the water and turn it into liquid water for our purposes. I'm not saying that this would be comfortable, but a habitable planet that is uncomfortable is better than no habitable planet at all

I read something recently in regards to an expected 'Population Implosion' as a result of an aging population, which in turn is a result of the same excessive breeding that has caused this popular belief that we're headed for a situation with an overpopulation. A Population Implosion would most likely lead to the opposite, underpopulation and difficulties maintaining a population capable of both breeding and maintaining societal needs. It would be very interesting if you did a series on both of these potential scenario and comparing them.

One possibility totally overlooked in your video is building sustainable space colonies. Instead of looking for a perfect place to live, why not build one? Certainly difficult, but nothing fundamentally impossible about it. Plus a space colony can be moved over time to avoid long term hazards, unlike a planet. In addition humans should strive to live outside of gravity well instead of being trapped in one, as it provides vastly greater mobility.

2:30 FYI, we reached "Peak Child" about a decade ago. Population will peak in a about a century on 9 billion, (as babies just born reach 100-year old life expectancy) After that population will go down. Watch "Don't Panic" by prof. Hans Rosling (RIP) for a better explanation.
