I’m loving all the Martha Argerich recognition lately. She is truly one of a kind. A virtuoso pianist of the absolute highest for whom the greatest technical difficulties are easy. An interpreter whose poetry, fire, emotion, passion and phrasing is world class. A intellectual who has committed herself to learning as many languages as she can so as to be able to communicate with her audiences and experience the world. A survivor whose life story would bring most to their knees but through which she has pushed forward to still be her best self. She’s an absolute living legend and a treasure, and the world is lucky to have her and to know her art!

Neurologically speaking, playing the piano, more than any other instrument, requires use of both hands in extremely complex and intricate ways. Both right and left hemispheres of the brain are activated (right side of body activates left hemisphere, left side activates right hemisphere). Most people are dominant in only one hemisphere. The right side is involved in creativity and music, for example. The left, speech and language. Beyond that, Martha Argerich is in a world class all to herself. Genius will always be a mystery to the rest of us.

In no way does the piano require the use of two hands more than basically any other instrument, that’s a silly thing to say. Piano is one of the few instruments that it’s even POSSIBLE to play one-handed, much less actually has repertoire that only requires one. Everything you said about pianists applies equally to a violinist or a flutist, if not MORE so.

@@terryjones573 I think what she tried to mean, is the fact that most of the time when you play the piano you have to "separate" your brain in two parts, one for the accompaniment, one for the melody, or you can play 2+ melodies at once with syncopated rhythms, which is very "brain demanding" compared with the rest of the instruments. Most of the instruments need two pack of fingers, or both hands, or some combination of them (4 fingers + one hand in violin), but the way you play music with them is mostly monophonic (not sure if it's the right term), I mean with only one flow of melody/rhythm. I'm speaking in general terms of course.

@@terryjones573 it definitely depends on the level. when you play something easy as chopsticks for example, the piano allows you to play only one hand. yes, it's easier to make melodies on the piano than on other instruments, but only simple melodies. At the elite level where you play some finger twisting piece like Prokofiev 3, both of your hands need to work seamlessly on all 87 keys like there is no separation between your dominant and less dominant hand. This makes the piano much more demanding regarding hand coordination.

@@terryjones573 Yeah, we need both hands to play music, but you completely miss the whole point of what Teri said. You are right only in a very specific context, which is some very simple piano piece that can be played with one hand, for a little kid maybe, a beginner... Don't be silly, not only it does require two hands but also those 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 fingers and the feet with pedals... Aye... I love violinist and how they sound like, but one hand is holding a bow, it doesn't require any fingers independance for that hand, it doesn't require foot work at all... I mean come on your comment and example are a joke, at least for me. When I play drums, yes I'm using both hands, fingers, feet, but it's a lot harder to play piano because I'm not doing chords, melodies, even if there is tone and frequency, it's still consider the rythm section only.

Yes, she's a true original, with an on-the-fly ability to move between different levels of the sound and architecture of a piece of music - and also, she loves working closely together with other musicians, not simply as a grand star soloist (when she was around thirty she must have seemed to have been cut out for just that role, like a female Horowitz - but it turned out that she also wanted to delve into chamber music). Her ability to play out intricate sonic shapes, "soundscapes", and orchestrate the sound, and at the same time work closely together with the other musicians - and to vary the sound of the instrument - remjnds me of people like Chick Corea and Carlos Santana in their prime. It's simply amazing that she is still active and touring at eighty, and as good as ever. :)

@@louise_rose Perfect description. What she does on the piano is phenomenal, going from fire and huge, rich sound to passages that sound so fragile they might break. She also finds inner voices and melodies that other pianists don't, and can pick out a sensitive phrase where other pianists just play a flurry of notes. Her rapport with other musicians is also great; she says she likes having somebody else as a stimulus, and you can hear (particularly in live recordings) the conversation between musicians. I hope she continues for years to come!

Martha doesn't try hard to impress by looking at the sky so you know she can feel the keys. There is no need for her to do that. I mean her storage is impressive enough. No one comes close. She looks at the keys...so what? No one can play from memory the way she does. And no pretentious body movements. Down to earth genuis. I always cringe when I watch those who swing left and right pretentiously...some right from the first note.

I am Dutch and I have been a labourer all my life. I speak 5 languges: German, English, French, Dutch and "Double Dutch." 😉 In my hometown, The Hague, I have known a man, who only had primary school and he was a self taught genius, for he mastered 15 languages, besides knowledge of physics, mathematics and so on. He has never been abroad!

@@RelaxWithDog - He lived together with his brother and sister. They were eccentrics and lovely people. The only ambition he had, was to know more and more. He earned an income by translating Japanese patents. Best wishes!

It is amazing, of course, but not a surprise, at least to me. Knowing she's a genius, and fluent in the hardest and most beautiful language of all (music), it seems natural to me that she can speak several other languages as well, and so well.

I think that, as a pianist, she is a genius. You may think whatever you want, of course, sticking to your narrow definition of genius.

@@PabloKeilis oh cmon, genius is all about creating, creating a style, a vision. Creativity, imagination, mastery of creating. If Martha is a "genius" then so is every other profesional pianist. And that way the word "genius" loses meaning, and then what is Beethoven? Mozart? Bach? Paul mccartney? Those are real geniuses. You throw the word around like everyone is a genius. Doesnt take a genius to memorize and play a piece, i can do it. Everyone can, are we all genius? Btw, She's a great pianist, not my favorite but a great pianist. I'll say that Glenn Gould was definitely the most creative out of all pianists (classical pianist), but i still wouldnt call him a genius. Altough purely intelectually and in brain motor capacity he probably was. However, a creative genius like Mozart he was not.

@@ignacioclerici5341yes, she’s a genius. She created the music from the sheet music derived from the old masters. She could also play by ears very well. She does improvise for fun when she tries out the new piano in the hall but has not taken it seriously.

I don't think this is anything particularly unusual for musicians. Firstly they have a fantastic ear and secondly if they can learn and memorise complex scores then really languages are no biggie for them. I think Rubinstein spoke about 9. One hears them conversing in several languages all the time .Listen to Kocsis speaking English for example , Not only is his diction perfect, but his vocabulary is vast. I think it is more unusual to find a musician who only speaks his or her own language then to find one who speaks several. My wife speaks 5 and she had a cousin who spoke 11

I personally know musicians who only speak one language...personally know 5, and English is a problem to them lol... Nope...not everyone can do this just because they can play a music instrument. Hence the fact some people can play music yet can be, illiterate otherwise.

I think this is a very old misconception. I'm studying with an incredible French organist and English stays a struggle for her (accent, grammar, vocab). I'm learning French now so she can speak to me in her native tongue instead. I just don't think she has a massive interest in languages and you have to have that in order to learn one properly.

Just in order to be a well rounded classical musician you need basic knowledge of Italian, French and German. All of the great, golden age musicians were fluent in multiple European languages - French was the language of art for all of Europe including Russia and England. We're losing so much knowledge now that everything is available. Historical context is slipping away from us. Edit: I see comments which see learning languages in the way of a KZitem language channel ("wow how do they do that") or Duolingo but Martha has lived in these languages. Being a musician (used to) do that to you.

Quando si parla di menti straordinarie, toccate dal cielo fin dalla nascita, non si può che riferirsi a personaggi come la Argerich (o come il suo amico Barenboim): ci sono tante persone che parlano 6 lingue, ma unire a questo la capacità di suonare divinamente anche degli strumenti, dirigere, fare i manager e altro è la dimostrazione che nella vita c'è chi nasce con doti speciali, sconosciute alla stragrande maggioranza degli esseri umani. Si chiamano geni. La Argerich è una di questi.

Music - all kind of it - and language are both sound, I mean one of the most richest and complex human's structures. As a musician, the most important thing to do since the beginning of your practice - and during your whole life - is learn to LISTEN. Listen and hear of course. Listen the music you want to play, listen yourself and the way you want try to play ; and so on, it never stop ! Sound is a very rich substance and mostly, is a dynamic stuff that's why need to pay attention to any kind of sound's source. The quality of our hearing, can improve the way we speak. Digital technology is radically changing and modifying our hearing and speaking.

Quite a few pianists seem to be fluent in a decent number of languages, though I don't know any who could match the late Charles Hopkins (who once casually said in my hearing that he spoke 'every European language', which I took to mean every major national language - but even if he didn't speak, say, Cornish, Armenian and East Friesian it would be a substantial number). But getting around the world will I suppose encourage at least a passing interest in communicating with the people one meets.

Most top concert pianists can many languages because they are traveling around all the time many years and in different countries but yes it is also an own decision because not all want to learn french or italian.

Argentinian mental acuity has something to do with it, no doubt! Or maybe it's a nice aside from rehearsing so much classical music to work on the different languages. There is something refreshing about bouncing between languages and music!

I'm glad to know about Martha Argerich... But 1 min.23 - What's it for?... This is way too short to figure things out... Besides, many can speak 2-3-4 languages ( a little or fluently - & it becomes useful - in Europe mostly ).. It doesn't give justice to this great Artist... It is a very nice short... But too short... Thank's anyhow!... ( If you find an interesting film on her life & work - 01 hour duration - 'would be great!... ) Regards...
