I tried this on my 13 year old son. He's a yellow (almost orange) belt in a style that's pretty much Shotokan. Because he was in his kamae, he easily recovered from the downward pull and he would have taken my head off with a left hook. My head was wide open. Your uke is standing with his feet side by side. Anyone with any training at all is going to have their stance sorted.

If your head was wide open you're doing something wrong. That's aside from whether or not the technique works.

An interesting variation on sumi otoshi. In my club we lead uke off to one side to break balance and then apply downward force into their elbow. This is the same principle but more directly applied. Very nice!

At the end of this you say that the Foundation is for people who haven't done Aikido before.....however... I have been an Aikidoka for many years and a Karateka for many more and I found it excellent. I like the way the techniques are taught - very concise and to the point. I think it is interesting to see how the classical techniques are adapted for the the Street Course. It is like Kata and Bunkai in Karate. The principles are learned in the Foundation and the application in the Street course.

It’s a great Technique to move through a crowd and it looks a Lot like Tony Blauer’s Half Spear👍🤷♂️
Although I enjoy your videos, that one is an example of a pre-orchestrated aikido move you would see practiced in a dojo with both parties compliant in the move. It would have no effect on a sturdy guy in the street. It would be far better to do a knife hand strike to the side of the neck. I have done some judo, 30 years of karate and a little aikido (training under a 7th Dan who learned aikido in Japan under Osensei Ueshiba). No martial art is perfect but we must avoid thinking that in some threatening situations techniques learned in the dojo are effective in threatening situation in the street.

Heh. The variant called "The Televangelist" isn't as elegant, but it's more secure. Hand comes up under the chin (think WWII Fairbairn Chin Jab) or catches the forehead. Up, over, back and down as you step through. Wearing a cheap suit and drawling "Lord Jayzus *HEAL* this afflicted Brother" is optional. The whole "shoulders off from over the feet and restrict the motion of the feet" is a little easier that way.

There’s 2 things you lads at Aikidoflow don’t realize about aikido. 1.) Aikido is 50% street fight applicable techniques, and the other 50% of aikido is more of a “game” that aikido practitioners play. What I mean by game is that when an Aikido practitioner participates in randori or jiwaza, he is learning reflex development. His reflexes are becoming extremely sharp when he plays the game of aikido by using footwork and techniques to evade attack. Reflex development is CRUCIAL for a street fight because most street fights occur with someone going from 0-100 within a blink of an eye swinging punches at you. So yes, some aikido techniques might not be applicable in a street fight, but when you use those techniques in randori or jiwaza, you are building your reflexes immensely which will then come in very useful on the street when you need to evade attack. 2.) Aikido falls on two ends of a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum you have the spiritual aikido (often associated with Aikikai) where practitioners are not concerned with the martial aspect of aikido. This aikido is practically useless because people treat it as yoga and basically a dance with zero martial substance to it. On the other end of the spectrum you have YOSHINKAN Aikido. Yoshinkan aikido is the second largest aikido organization worldwide, and it is known for being very effective for street self defense. In fact, yoshinkan aikido has been taught to the Tokyo riot police and Tokyo police department. Yoshinkan practitioners are real martial artists and their aikido is deadly, which is why law enforcement officials prefer training in Yoshinkan.

Great demonstration as always 👍. I have been forced to defend myself against street thugs a few times over the past six decades in the big city. Most of these altercations ended with a knife hand strike, ridge hand strike or front snap kick. One strike and walk away. Keep the great videos coming 👊😼

I suspect relative height and weight is super important here. Unless you are big, the other person is quite likely to stagger back and successfully brace themselves as a reflex to regain balance.

Aikido devolves into judo and juijitsu when you start grappling closely. It is very hard to do Akido techniques on a disciplined fighter, they do not over commit, they stay over their base, they use strategy. Aikido is better suited to self defense where someone is trying to kill you with one blow, not so good for someone scoring points with his jab and shooting in for double leg take downs.
