In rural Australia, we grew pumpkins and figs for this purpose. In case the newspaper squares we but and attached to the dunny door handle ran out. People threw pumpkin seeds along roadsides and railway lines so people caught needing to 'go' but the next outdoor loo being several thousand miles away could have a bit of basic hygiene, even with no water. Kids were told to use pumpkin leaves on their delicate little bottoms, but not touch the growing little pumpkins because they needed to eat these, in order to use the leaves to wipe their bottoms with. Very logical, rural common sense. The gross covered pumpkin leaves in winter made you quickly change your mind about really needing to "go". They were so prickly and raspy... The fig tree leaves were reserved for "when you go up and get tall enough to pick these. You had to remember to pick the right number of leave before pulling your pants down and check nobody was watching you. But they always were and run out laughing at you with pants down... Then you get home or to school and be sternly reprimanded for "indecent public exposure".

She said there was no toilet roll, and even the cardboard roll from the middle had gone. She couldn't find anything at arms reach apart from what she said looked like a brand new white face flannel. Well, she used it, but she couldn't get it to flush, She had to take it back out the bowl, and scrub it to within an inch of its life, her knuckles were red raw, then she just left it on the side of the bathroom sink.
