Looking back on all the sleepovers and birthdays and celebrations fills me with nostalgia. It’s quite easy to understand what was so great about growing up before social media, smart phones, and online interaction took over. Every weekday you missed your friends (nonschool friends-church for me) and you didn’t have a phone to text, call, FaceTime or dm them. Your parents might have had cell phone/pagers but that was theirs for work, and emergencies. You memorized the house numbers for your friends and planned the next sleepover in the short bursts of phone calls you were able to have with the family-shared house phone. You probably talked about it Wednesday evening and by Friday it was the only thing you could think about. Of course asking your parents for permission was always the LAST thing you did because you wanted to catch them in a good mood or bring it up to when it would be difficult for them to say no- i.e. when your friend came over to visit and was in the room. 😅😂 The hosting friend always nudged you to ask their parents because it’s much harder to say no to someone else’s kid. Especially if you place your hands in prayer pleading position with puppy dog eyes and the drawn out “pleeeeease” to seal the deal. Worked a charm. 😂 Getting the okay for those sleepovers was better than getting any job, getting into any school or acing any exam. It was the ultimate confirmation of a SICK night to come. Of course the nights were filled with caffeine, sugar, pillow fights, scary movies, dragonball z, and most importantly: the intense video game marathon. You had a blast and tried to squeeze in as much as you could until your parents came to pick you up. Nothing was as dreadful and depressing as the “it’s time to go! Holler that came when they arrived.” You said your goodbyes and felt a mix of appreciation and sorrow that it was over as you stated out the window at their house, perhaps waving bye. Then you called them up a couple days later and said “who’s house are we doing?” and the gears started turning all over again. When you had to get permission and couldn’t constantly communicate you were so much more in the moment with your friends. Also, this may seem a tangent but there was something about growing up in the 90s/2000s where you were taught that race didn’t matter. Your ethnicity/race/sexuality/“gender” (which wasn’t hardly a term back then) were things you could express and appreciate but they certainly didn’t define you. They weren’t inserted into every conversation and people didn’t smash you over the head with respecting these unimportant details about them. You were told one thing in school “treat others how you would like to be treated”-the *golden* rule. My experiences with friends of other backgrounds was always fun and engaging but never outright political. It was just “this is how their family does things” and I appreciated it but it was never what defined them. They were Americans like me. I miss when that was still a thing people were happy to say we shared. I bring this all up to say that growing up back then had an appreciation for shared human experience you don’t get these days. The vanity and insecurity that social media promotes, the “always in touch” but never in close contact that smart phones and online interaction has created, and the constant identity politics that consume our perception of self and others these days has made us closer but so much further from one another. Take me back please. I just want to fall asleep on the couch next to my boys with glow of a CRT television and a game console on the floor one last time.

You triggered a memory in me when the video said your teacher will care. I remembering hearing that as a kid and thinking it was true. Now that I'm older I realize that teachers don't care at all. It was just an excuse for the parents to say no.
