For me, the greatest female classical singer that I ever heard. That was 53 years ago and I still haven't heard better.

I heard Dame Janet Baker sing Sea Pictures of Elgar in her farewell tour to Australia many years ago. Utterly luscious. Where Corals Lie is the loveliest of all those songs, I think.

A great moment in British singing history. Definitive in every way. Elgar's song cycle is sublime. Dame Janet , a God-given talent and a great human being. The orchestra under Barbirolli is magnificent. Do try to listen to the whole group of songs.

Halogenfox it is wonderful when the power of music ( which has a timeless quality) moves us to tears, particularly when we associate it with a person we love or a special occasion. Music has a healing aspect. I remember as a student being booked to sing the Tenor in Stainer's Crucifixion. My Grandad had often sung the Baritone role and one year earlier he had heard me do the work and cried his heart out. This time he was dying in hospital and it became a special performance of this moving piece.

What is it about this song? I HATE the female trained classical voice, have no desire to go to where corals lie, but this moves me to tears too. I suspect the land described is not of this earth, rather like that described by Procul Harum: A sand so white And sea so blue No mortal place at all

The deeps have music soft and low When winds awake the airy spry It lures me, lures me on to go And see the land where corals lie The land, where corals lie By mount and mead by lawn and rill, When night is deep when noon is high, That music seeks and finds me still, And tells me where the corals lie And tells me where the corals lie Yes, press my eyelids close, ‘tis well Yes, press my eyelids close, ‘tis well But far the rapid fancies fly The rolling worlds of wave and shell, And all the lands where corals lie. Thy lips are like a sunset glow Thy smile is like a morning sky, Yet leave me, leave me, let me go And see the land where corals lie. The land, the land, where corals lie

For all those who this music moves to tears (as it does I), having seen The Blue Planet, it is even more meaningful after seeing the devastating death of so many of the World's corals. This song will one day soon be just a memory of what once was.

Wonderful flourishing voice. I happened to meet her sea pictuere on the Elgar cello concertor by Jacqueline Du Pre in 1986(?). I had purchase this EMI CD 4 time, because of this song. Two for my friends, one lost and recently I bought again another one to keep. Thanks for sharing this beautiful song.

Wonderful performance. Just a couple of points (to be pedantic) about the lyrics: It's "By mount and MEAD..." (not stead, which I assume is a misspelling of steed). It's "And all the LAND (singular, not lands) where corals lie.
