Thats how betas used to work before people started just releasing their games from open beta like fornite was in "beta" for 4 years or valorant went from beta to full launch without downtime. If the game needs work and needs to go offline to fix problems people have been complaining about (that they have tried to fix multiple times) I think thats healthier than continuing to pump money and dev into something that is inherently going to fail because the bones of it are fucked.

platform fighters just need more time to come out. whether its greedy publishers with dollar signs in their eyes or developers underestimating the time they need, platform fighters are almost always coming out unfinished and its pretty upsetting as a big fan of them. (of course that's not to say that its the ONLY problem, its just the biggest and pretty much prevalent with every release) also i should say that it doesn't make me mad because i don't like them (hell, nasb is probably my favorite platform fighter), it makes me mad because first impressions are everything nowadays, and the worse a launch for a game is the more likely that people refuse to give it another chance when it gets better also a little correction for 6:46, nakat did stop competing in the game, but he did actually join the multiversus team as a community manager, so he's definitely committed to the game

@@Buddhakingpen Yep. Smash 64 was a sucess because it was revolutionary, it was the first one, and the tecnology at the time were more limited, if smash 64 released the way it did today, it would flop. but even smash 64 has advantages compared to these other plataform fighters. the classic mode is fun and better than the arcade modes of the other games, break the targets and board the plataforms are also fun modes that are unique for each character, so it has other modes besides just fighting, something multiversus doesn't even have, the game itself has a lot of charm in it's art-style, a cool cinematic intro, soundtrack is great, more stages, a proper final boss at the end of classic mode, an ending, that even though lackluster, at least is something, which all of the others don't have anything. i'm not saying smash 64 is better than those other plataform fighters, but it shouldn't even be a comparasion, no modern plataform fighter game, indie or not, should even be able to be compared to smash 64, it should be much higher, than a more than 20 years old game, from an almost 30 year old retro console.

There's a lot of status effects and cooldowns and stuff that isn't immediately clear unless you know what you're looking at. For example, Microsoft presence in Asia in null causing Xbox to die off in the region. Valve had zero thoughts about Asia that SteamDeck only became available in the largest handheld market, Japan, a year after launch and the rest of Asia still has zero access. Even when they do sell, they are selling American-oriented products with zero understanding of the market, ultimately making the products lose popularity over time. You don’t see Japan pushing weird r18 meme games that are super popular in Japan to other countries. They only sell what their country is known for in mainstream audiences. *sorry for the rant* but this behavior definitely gotta change if they cared about their products.

There's nothing intrinsically valuable to having a wide swath of characters and in any other genre of game it would be considered gimmicky. Some of the biggest fighting games right now like skullgirls and guilty gear xrd average 200-300 players daily, multiversus still has double the players. A fighting game having a player count above a hundred is thriving. Fighting games aren't mainstream and arent supposed to be. The issue is that developers don't realize this and constantly tries to make fighting games something its not with unreasonable expectations. Treating fighting games like fortnite or valorant and monetizing it with the expectation that millions of people will play it was the reason it failed.

Don’t use Xrd, Strive has over 2000. But we want Brawlhalla numbers, 10,000s. Achieved as a platform fighter, same as Multiversus. Not a small feat, but obviously possible. Here’s the thing, with the licenses behind it via WB, it should NOT have been a Freemium game. Or at the very least, have a retail version/option to go with it. Other Freemium Platform Fighters usually start out Indie, and have original characters with no expectations. That itself is a blessing in disguise. The only problem Nick’s game had that this game also shared is the severe lack of extra modes, such as an Adventure, Mini Games, Items, etc. Because with Smash, despite how big it’s tournament scene is that both tried to compete with, it’s the general and casual options that keep Smash open for anyone in the long run. Just to mess around with friends be it locally or online. Even Rivals of Aether added such content over time, and that game was made with a fraction of the cost Multiverses. Not to mention having a far smaller roster, including DLC (but not Custom characters). The bizarre buff/debuff 2v2 gameplay certainly didn’t help either.

I wanted the new characters to drop soon & fast, never gave a sh*t about maps. I was -patiently waiting on Joker & Godzilla, but from an obviously hyper-realistic standpoint: there was no conceivable way they could output meaningful characters with well-balanced kits that were still fresh, fun, & exciting in the expected optimal time frame to meet everyone's consumer needs. The game seemed to phantom-promise us much, but when that slowly turned into just paying for battle-passes & grinding mindlessly every event for a skin on a character I wouldn't use: it was simply too much. So long Multiversus..you brought me so much joy in that small but humbling time frame. I had an amazing time sh*tting on people with Garnet at the higher levels of gameplay. I fought Tamunokuro (arguably the #1 Shaggy at the time) during his rise to the top & even bumped into GSMVoid on his Black Adam in 2's that was thrilling. But now the game is coming to a reprieve & with that, hats off to you Player First Games; I hope by the time you re-release the finished polished product in early 2024 like you advertise you will, it'll be another moment bringing all us platform-fighter lovers together once again! :)

I still think MultiVersus went to open beta _way_ too soon. It should've stayed on the closed alpha for at least 6 more months. It was too plagued with janky hitboxes, balancing issues and way too many glitches. Like you said, it doesn't help that Warner Bros. still pushed the competitive scene, battlepasses and other microtransactions in the meantime, which made the public perceive the game was pretty much complete already (despite them constantly advertise that it was still on open beta). All that, combined with the lack of new content on Season 2 and they making grinding even slower quickly caused the hype to die. I love Tony and PFG, they're really talented, transparent, communicative and have love for the craft and the source material, but it's clear they were given more than they can chew. It still baffles me that Warner Bros. didn't increase the budget and/or expanded the dev team, because despite their talent they didn't have enough manpower to pump content at regular basis, on top of them being unfamiliar with fighting games (as most of the PFG are former Riot employees). I'm really hoping the definitive release in early 2024 brings enough new stuff and proper optimization to reignite the hype, because I really believe that MultiVersus has a lot of potential; more than any other platform fighter that came after Smash Bros.

8:48 In the topic of having a strong IP This seems to be something people don't realize, but Mutiversus did NOT have a strong IP behind it. If you ask someone what do characters like Mario, Link and Pikachu have in common, you'll hear people say "they're videogame characters", more knowledgeable people will be more specific and say "Nintendo characters". If you ask them what do characters like Sponge Bob, Aang and Danny Phantom have in common, you'll hear "cartoon characters", some people will even recognize they are all Nickelodeon characters. If you ask them what do characters like Bugs Bunny, Arya Stark and Batman have in common, "Warner Brothers" is not the first thought in anyone's minds. The game has a hard time gaining a passionate fanbase because there's no identidy, the characters don't share anything other than a company that just so happens to own their rights. People are Nintendo fans, people are Nickelodeon fans, similarly, people are Looney Tunes fans, people are DC fans, no one is a Warner Brothers fan.

Oh let me tell ya, because I've been saying it since release: 1) the online was awful. You could literally lag to death. 2) the characters were way too floaty. Having 3 jumps and an up B was just too much. Every character was basically jigglypuff. 3) the dodge roll was WAY too powerful. You could stop yourself from dying by just rolling out of it. And I mean you get hit with a death smash and your flying to your death THEN you dodge roll out and save yourself. It was too broken and also inconsistent. 4) all the characters movements where somehow both unoriginal and too complicated. Things like hit boxes just didn't make any sense

Void & Nakat left because Nakat was hired by PlayerFirstGames to become their Community Manager. This meant he was no longer able to compete in tournaments due to that being a requirement for working for them. Void didn't want to play the game with anyone else so he hasn't entered tournaments because of this. Also, anything that players paid for whether they are skins etc are still accessible in Local play and will transfer over to the full release. As a professional commentator for MultiVersus I believe full heartedly in this game. I know it will do better once the full release happens. This was going to happen eventually as it was a beta, and they got so much feedback that they are now properly able to adjust the game and make it something truly amazing.

Having seen games release as beta and proceed, fully monetized, to a full release (Heroes of the Storm, Fortnite) leaves me wondering whether MV planned on doing the same and just didn't get enough traction to actually go to full release. This "ok we got what we needed, beta's over" pivot feels like just that, a pivot. The original plan didn't work so they're trying the beta thing. I haven't kept up with the game since Marvin released so perhaps I'm out of the loop, but prior to that nothing really conveyed the idea that this game was going to be pulled at some point. It felt like it was going to go full steam ahead and "leave beta" eventually, after it was well into its lifespan, like the examples I gave above.

The only reason I stopped playing is because my friends stopped tbh, and that's mostly due to server issues. For me though? I love the digital input as opposed to Smash's analog. If they pull their resources together to fix the floaty movement, the wacky hitboxes and the offline modes (recquiring 4 people to play offline is the dumbest shit on planet earth), it's still in the game, I think. Maybe if they lay off the live service aspect and just make a purchasable package along with the ftp version, it might help. Live service games are going the way of the dinosaur and for good reason

I think all these takes on Multiversus are being too cerebral in analyzing why the game failed. "Look at the pathway a new player takes" "the rotating characters" "the netcode" "No tournament play or twitch viewers." None of that matters to the average player. Most players quit before Void and Nakat and don't even know who they are anyway. People quit Multiversus because it's not fun to play. We could analyze all the reasons it's not fun to play. But the bottom line is the moment to moment gameplay doesn't feel good. It feels gooey, soft, and unresponsive. Everything else would've been overlooked if playing the game actually felt good. But it was and remains awful and I doubt they will fix it.

As a casual player, I found that the camera / character colours made the game hard to follow The camera is pretty far back and on many stages the background was as saturated as the characters. I'm def noob but all this meant the character movements were hard for me to follow. In Smash the moves just feel that much crispier. Like the attack silhouettes are very clear. It'd be as simple as increasing the amount of shadow on the characters in MVS I'll remain hopeful and see if they do indeed relaunch in 2024.

One thing I never can understand is why people say that Multiversus lacks in content when it comes to characters. Back during season one which was when the player base was still healthy for a fighting game, there were five characters in season one in the first month and two in the last two months of the season. Pretty much every fighting game gets one character every three or four months, and games with the same model release one character per season. What were people expecting a new character every week?

I feel like the post-launch characters failed to add hype. All of them (aside from Marvin) were just added because they were in upcoming media that WB was releasing and there was a lack of variety, they added two Gremlins characters and two R&M characters. When you can only add so many characters at a time, doubling up on franchises is a bad idea especially when there are so many franchises people wanted in Multiversus but were shafted.

Honestly the game should've been a limited time open beta. So many people got into the game expecting and demanding for changes ignoring the fact the games not finished yet. While making those patches were slow by the devs, communicating that these changes will be made in the next release of the open beta would be easier for everyone as it would give time for player to anticipate for the next release and devs time to polish the game

I played the game. I thought it was OK, but it was nothing more than that, and its nature as a live service game meant it was basically trying to turn itself into a daily chore. I think that to beat Smash, it has to be a full AAA experience - that means a strong single player mode (or preferably, several) in addition to good multiplayer. I think making it F2P is actually a trap - fighting game people don't play F2P games, it's not a F2P genre.

I had quite a bit of issues with this game as a Smash fan, so here's a couple that you didn't mention in the video. 1. The game felt really floaty. Game feel is really important as many of us may already know, and this game just failed when it came to that. Characters would feel really unresponsive and would linger far too long in the air with little control on their descent speed. 2. Cooldowns. Some characters have cooldowns where others don't, and it feels like you're at such a disadvantage when your special ability is on CD and your opponent has no CDs. You're far too heavily punished for missing them and they don't come up often enough to warrant learning how to play around them or using them more. Having 1/4th of your kit disabled for 7 seconds feels AWFUL 3. Lack of kill pressure. It isn't uncommon for stocks to go up to 140 damage and characters surviving really solid hits and returning back to stage, recovery's waaay too strong. Unless you knock your oponent into the blast zone, it's very easy for them to make their way back up on stage. This is cause by the previous issue of floatiness (floatyness?) 4. Lack of balance. Now there's two parts to this, the lack of character balance and the lack of balance between duo and solo play. Character would be incredibly overpowered one patch, and absolutely gutted the next, it was all over the place. It was also very clear that they were focused on doubles, which is why I imagine a lot of these design decisions like low kill pressure, and floaty gameplay were made so that the doubles mode could be properly supported. The issues with that come when playing 1v1 where the game just feels really bad to play for someone who enjoys the 1v1 aspect of fighting games which is one of the genre's main appeal. Great video as always!

One of the big theories I've seen floating around this game is that the Wb/Discovery deal really hurt its support. This game is far from bad, in my opinion, but it's just one of those games that always sits lower on my priority list. It's hard to get myself in the mood to play against some sweaty Jake who never lets me get a hit in. Fighting games are just full of extremely sweaty players, it's hard to play them casually. And on the other side, as this video claims, it's also hard to play this game competitively because of bugs, game balance and prize pool incentives for the top % of players.

It's difficult to articulate, but the attitude that's decided for the game is a quiet factor in longevity. Whereas Smash Bros. is a celebration of video games big and small with reverence for all its references and cameos, Multiversus was a mirror of current pop culture and memes, with jokes and trends deciding much of the roster and an imbalance of nostalgia leaving it feeling skewed.
