Yeah, very unexpected! The convertible Beetle I was working on recently had a similar issue last winter. The brakes worked fine on there, though, but it would puke inside itself the same way, but it did leak out and was easy to find.

3:00 The cup seal that pushes the fluid is =just= supple enough to seal when you hit it hard, but lets fluid by otherwise - had an old Datsun truck that did the same thing. Ended up getting a seal kit because new cylinders were far beyond my budget; used a brake hone on the cylinder, stacked everything back together, worked great - then it got totaled by a Suburban.

That's how I was taught in the 70's to check master cylinder on all cars. We would push the pedal down then release it slightly and push again, if the pedal sank master cylinder was no good. I believe it enabled the fluid to bypass the piston.
@DuckmanCycles
Ай бұрын
That indeed seems to be the case, I would bet on a displaced seal... which under high pressure the seal gets forced into position, low pressure allows internal blowby, and in this case, leaked right out of the master and into the body cavity!

G'day, Lord Duckman. It's never boring working on vintage Volkswagen's. There's always something to test you. Q. When your installing a new master cylinder, do you bench bleed it. I've found on my 63 beetle by doing this It's eliminated the problems i was having bleeding. The latest stupid beetle with the starting problem. That starter wire can be a problem if installed wrong. You can't have any weight on the terminal to pull it off. Anyway, thanks for all your videos man i appreciate you sharing the knowledge. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
@DuckmanCycles
Ай бұрын
I've never bench bled any master cylinder. I've not ever had a problem with them building pressure, it might be because I wait a bit after putting in fluid for air to escape, you can usually hear the bubbles. I think I've talked about that a long time ago, I think it was a go-kart video though.
@DuckmanCycles

Well, this starter wiring is installed wrong.... NOT AT ALL! Someone ripped it out! LoL! I'll get under the car and re-attach the wire, maybe even today. The connector may be a bit loose from the abuse, this isn't the first time its been pulled out on this car, but last time was me (wasn't in a video).... but it took quite a good amount of force. However, the owner was the one who reattached it, so I don't know how tight it was after that. I'll get it fixed!

That is a unique VW design... you truly only need one switch for the brake lights to work, even in this case. VW intended this to work so that you have a warning light on the dashboard that lights if one brake circuit is failing.... just in case the drive is too stupid to notice the brakes aren't working.
