John Moore is just about a month away from his 101st year. A veteran of the R.C.N., he's a resident of the Camp Hill Veterans facility in Halifax now ... and has his ukulele and guitar with him. Music and his playing has been his life. According to scientific studies, music can enrich and prolong life, and he's a good example. His days are active and he still plays his ukulele, ... although arthritis has pretty much made it impossible to form chords or strum with the power he had at his playing peak. That said, he can still pick melodies out on the strings and sing lyrics, ... because, unlike many of his contemporaries, he is still with it and still here ... with his uncanny ear for harmony. Maybe MUSIC is one of the secrets to a long(er) life.
This is another of those tapes I recorded in (glorious) mono at least 55 years ago. The other singer is dad's (baby) brother, Allan, ... who left us in 2015. In the 30's , Allan and brother Harold sang together as the Harmony Twins ... even though Harold was a couple of years older. The "Twins" were a big hit locally and an almost permanent fixture on "Uncle Mel's" talent show that broadcast every Saturday over CHNS radio in Halifax ... most of the time with John providing the music from his ukulele, banjo, or guitars. World War Two changed the lives for many families ... but hit the Moore family particularly hard when Harold's ship (H.M.C.S. REGINA) was torpedoed in 1944.
After the war, John and Allan continued providing music with dance bands and small combos. In the early 60's John was in the first iteration of "Singalong Jubilee", broadcast nationally in Canada over CBC television. He played guitar ... and, ... a lot of ukulele in the band backing Bill Langstroth and the Jubilee singers.
There is a rich history here, ... but rather than get into that, ... I know you're here for the music, ... especially you ukulele players out there who are keeping this music alive.
This is audio only, but I thought I would make it a bit more interesting with some visuals for the recording which could have a been a rehearsal, but, more than likely, was just dad and my uncle doing what they enjoyed, ...a spontaneous event anytime in our house when I was growing up.
I can only hope all you ukulele players will share these videos with your friends and fellow uke players, so we can get some BIG numbers ... because dad is not only surprised that he's been around this long, ... but that so many of you enjoy his music.
