@@workoncruiseship So does the buffet or whatever for say like the crewmembers from the Phillipines have ethnic dishes that are geared for their tastes? And would there be any way that a passenger could score some after getting a probably hand written menu of what is there? It would probably be better to talk with a crewmember or staff before going on a cruise I'd imagine a get a rundown of what the dishes are then make your list about what sounds good if they can get it for you.
@4thdoctor284

@** Well having been on several cruises I can tell you that the buffet will be recycled several days with a bit more fresh dishes to help mask the "old food" on the buffet. They also re purpose leftovers from the main dining room. What I meant was the crew's buffet is probably good because it's not geared toward US/Europeans so it is cooked with the more traditional recipes and possibly by a chef from the region the majority if crew are from.

I-95 is in fact the reference code for the landing permit form to be submitted, together with a valid visa, to Customs in the USA by foreign crewmen on any ship to be allowed to set a foot on US soil. And even with all paperwork in good order, CBP boarding officers might at their discretion refuse anyone the right to go ashore, even if it is to be repatriated back home and thus leave the country... In the eyes of American authorities, every hardworking ship’s crew member is a potential terrorist, felon or illegal immigrant and needs to be treated as such, not withstanding nationality, age, education or family status...

Do they really make them pay? When I worked as a ships officer, the line I was with gave each and every crew member a book of ten tickets. The one ticket would pay only one bar bill. So, amongst us officers, we had a scheme where one of us would go to the bar and buy everyone a drink and or cigarettes/cigars, if they wanted them. This worked fine. Because most of the passengers would buy you a drink in return, at some point during the cruise.Those you couldn't drink by the end of the night you passe to ather crew members. With me, this usually meant I had a couple of thousand ciggys left at pay off, which I would take home and sell. And now the buggers have the cheek to charge crew members. Bloody disgraceful I call it. And as for snacks and sodas.....there was no charge and no control for either crew or passengers in my day. Which make me wonder, why are businesses so darned greedy these days? I hope the pandemic does not kill the industry, it shouldn't. The operators should have been investing the billions they have made over the years, for such an eventuality. If they haven't and they go under, it serves them right. But my heart truly goes out to thise who are made jobless through it. It's the old old story. The fat get fatter and the thin waste away.

On a typical schedule... does the crew that departs from the stateside port make the TransAtlantic part, the Med, and then the return? Do you have a port and starboard crew that trade off cruises? And how long is the stand-down for a liner between cruises when you return stateside? I think I could deal with the sea time on such a large vessel after years on a tin can, but the separation time must still be a killer. Question: When you have a vacation, do you avoid cruise ships or do you sometimes buy a cruise yourself?
@workoncruiseship
Жыл бұрын
Lol- I def knew of a few people who did indeed take a cruise for a week on their vacation. However, for me personally, I avoided them at all costs. Even after I resigned from ships, some family wanted me to take one but I refused haha. No specific reason, it just didn't fit well with my personality to be a guest on board.

@@workoncruiseship It is widely accepted that it references Interstate 95, moving up and down the length of the ship/up and down the length of the East Coast. Also, the vast majority of crew HAVE been on I-95, going to and from the ports in Ft Lauderdale and Miami. Not being from the USA does not mean ignorance of one's surroundings.

Who’s job is it to work on the watertight equipment? Is there a emergency response team on ships ?
@workoncruiseship
4 жыл бұрын
Mainly Electrical Dept/Engineers test and maintain watertight doors. They can be operated either remotely from the bridge or anyone can manually open/close it. There are several emergency response teams on board. All crew members have safety duties regardless of position. Front of house are directing guests to safety stations, checking off names on manifests, making announcements, crowd control, etc... There is a small medical team with doctors and nurses. However, there are also 2-3 medical teams who respond to heart attacks, falls, man overboard, etc... There are a few teams responsible for lowering lifeboats and guiding guests in as well as lifeboat drivers (involved in man overboard as well). Then, there are 5 fire teams on board (which I volunteered for). Complete fire fighting equipment (trained in live fire exercises and certified at a Port Canaveral Marine Academy). We would respond to any damage emergencies (fires, chemical spills, if the boat crashed or took any damage). We also responded if a helicopter medical evacuation was necessary. Other response teams included security which I cannot speak about publicly.

ships need to connect to satellites for internet, the owners of the satellites want money if why want to use them. so the ship just passes that cost to the user. thats why, most times it cost the same for passengers to connect.

What is a monthly salary for a crew member on average ? And while on board it appears lodging , food is all included except for the Pepsi machine.
@jimmyryburn4057
5 жыл бұрын
Pay depends on your job onboard. Some make 800.00 dollars per month, others make around 1,500 per month, some make around 2,000 per month. That is for crew. Officers make better money depending on their position and rank. Most crew work 6 to 8 month contracts where officers work 3 months on 3 months off. You pay for all of your personal needs with the exception of shit paper. Uniforms are covered with the exception of footwear. Non officers are allowed to spend 200 dollars per month out of their salary for most of what they need. Officers is unlimited spending.
@manchesterunitedno7
5 жыл бұрын
Keep that in mind, since most of the crews are from Asia, such as Filipino, India, Indonesia, Srilangka, etc. Median of 800-2000 dollars/month salary is already way beyond the minimum wage on their homeland. Even above the average wage of white collar salarymen. Plus they can live off with minimum spending since they spent most of the time on board of the cruise ship with catering and amenities provided freely for them, with a few exceptions. So, most of the time they save the salary for the family or opening a small business back home.

Unfortunately, I have not found a good time to do laundry. I've even tried between 11pm - 2am when most people are in the crew bar. However, they're also running back and forth between having drinks in the bar and checking on their clothes in the laundry room. They'll usually finish up round 3am or 4am. But then all the people whose shifts start at 6am will rush in there to start their laundry.
