⚠ I forgot to mention in the video Nickel’s odd cold and shaking condition did go away by the time we had got home from the vets and he hasn’t had any episodes like that since that day thankfully! We also did see a different vet yesterday! Penny’s hair growth has gotten a lot better so I did decide to just bring Nickel in and the vet & staff was so helpful and friendly. She looked at Nickel and decided we should put him under and get an X-ray to see if there was any tumours, kidney stones or even if something got wrapped around it etc that could be causing the paraphimosis, she did mention sometimes this can happen when they’re older as the muscles get weaker so that could be a cause too. She came back and showed me the X-ray (which was really cool to see such a tiny X-ray!) and it doesn’t appear that Nickel has any lumps, bumps or anything stuck. Since he was still under she offered to push it back in and add a little stitch to hopefully help keep his willy in. She also gave us a different antibiotic to give for 2 weeks as she mentioned sometimes a different antibiotic can help incase it was an infection that was causing the paraphimosis and the first antibiotics I gave just didn’t get it all. Nickel is back home doing well in a modified enclosure for a bit as we need to be able to see if he’s still peeing etc. She did mention it’s possible he could chew the stitch out but if it’s still there in 3 weeks he will have to come back and have it taken out, and of course there is still a chance it could prolapse again even with it being stitched tighter. I’m really happy I decided to get a second opinion though and in the future will continue to go to this vet clinic! ❤ You can watch the newest updates on Nickel & Penny here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/22aLz6aDgX6jY5g

I had a hamster in 2020. She was a Syrian and we got her from the Petstore. We loved her sooo much. We noticed she was constantly itching all the time! My mom was concerned she had fleas so in a month we found a vet and took her. We were told she had an internal disease and she was put on antibiotics. She was on them for a few months and then we stopped them after directed. We thought she was doing better. In a half year she was developing huge bald spots everywhere so we took her to to the vet yet again. We found that the disease was slowly killing her so she was put on antibiotics again. We did that for quite a while. We had a follow up after we realized she was getting worse every single day. She wouldn’t run on her wheel or explore her cage at all. The vet told us that the antibiotics had failed and the only option was putting her down. My whole family was crying. She was the funniest, kindest hamster over the 2.5 years she lived with us. She was a fighter until she couldn’t anymore. I’m never getting a pet from the Petstore again. You are the person who educated my whole family on hamster knowledge. Thank you so much. It was such a hard time after she passed.

I can totally understand your frustrations. We are definitely lacking in vets that are knowledgeable in hamsters (and other exotics). It's even more frustrating when we have to stress them out to bring them to the vets, spend hundreds of dollars, and still question whether or not our concerns were heard and if the diagnosis is correct. I have had hamsters for 10 years and only came across one vet who treated one of my hamsters like any other pet. The majority overlook them due to their size and how "cheap" they are. I hope this next vet is knowledgeable and you feel more confident in the answers they provide!

I feel your pain, Victoria. So frustrating trying to find a good exotic vet, especially in an emergency situation. Many times I wanted to get my sick hamsters in much sooner than most vets will schedule. Last summer, I finally found a group in my area that does allow emergency appointments but still had to wait for hours before speaking to the vet, but at least my hamster was taken back immediately and put on oxygen right away because she was very sick. That group has two exotic vets and the one caring for my Wiggles was really great.

Hi Victoria! I missed you so much, your cozy vids that I used to watch every night. And I'm missing Lola so much. Two weeks ago, one of my bunnies died and I have been mourning since. And now I'm so scared to get another one. Like, in the very very distant future, when I get another bun, I'm scared because my bunny passed away without showing any symptoms. I mean, I'm sure I missed it, but she was doing binkies and zoomies the day before her passing, and now I'm so anxious that my others will die like "poof." But her bunny sister just recently got to being herself. She was not eating and neither drinking water, only hay. I had to give her critical care and water in a syringe. So, I'm happy Cleo is feeling well. Now, I've got a baby bunny that I had to drive four hours to get because it was getting dumped into the streets, and I just want to focus on my own bunnies, but sadly I haven't found anyone that would want to take him or knows about bunny proper care. It's been so hard, and I will probably grow grey hair soon. He is only a baby (like 3-4 months old) and he was going to be dumped into the streets. Anyways, I'm so happy you're back. 💗 and it is okay to be tired and I'm happy you prioritized your well being by taking a break and that.💗💗💗

I completely understand your frustration with exotic vets/ every time I went for my hamsters, it was the same thing, and it was frustrating because I felt like no vet knew what they were talking about. For my blue tongue skink, the same thing everyone I went to didn’t believe me when I said that his one-off “squeezing.” I recently went to a vet an hour and some away from me, and she didn’t say anything about his squeezing. He does it out of frustration and a way to communicate. So, finding the right vet will all be worth it; I hope the next one you go to is the right one for you

My hamster has a cut on his side and one of my gerbils seems to have blood in her urine which has been an issue in the past but it went away after some medication but at that vet appointment they said that it could possibly be cancer and now that it’s back I’m so stressed about whether it’s cancer or not. I’m giving her the medication that was prescribed before but if 8t doesn’t go after a week or so then I’ll book a vets appointment.

Hi, Victoria. It sucks that you had such an awful experience at the vet with Nickel and Penny. I hope they're both doing better. They're very lucky to have you. And my hamster Cyrano owes a lot to you for the care I provide him, because your videos taught me so much about how to give him what he needs to be healthy and happy. So thank you for that. I've had similar experiences at the vet with my mice and rats that make me wonder why some people decided to become vets in the first place. I hope the next vet understands that Nickel and Penny are beloved members of your family and treats them with compassion and dignity. I hope you feel better as well. I know how difficult it is to worry about the little ones we love. Just remember, you're part of a community (that you created) and you're not alone. I think I speak for all of us when I say, we appreciate you and are here for you in any way we can be. Thanks for sharing and being honest and vulnerable with us. 11:27 omg, Victoria, I relate to that so hard. in my country, exotic vets don't really consider hamsters "worthy" of the same treatment they would give rabbits or dogs or cats. the last time I took my hamster to the vet, he basically just told me it could be anything due to his old age (2 and a half years) and to just give him anything to eat and keep him hydrated and just wait. my hammy died a few days later 😢

Thanks for being to honest about your burnout. It means a lot to fellow multi pet owners like me. I have 3 cats, 2 guineas, and a snake, and honestly feel so maxed out all the time. Love them all to bits, and of course we quite literally live for our pets, but it takes a toll! Two of my cats have been ill and I have visited the vet upwards of 10 times in the last 4 months to the tune of thousands of dollars. It is tiring, yo 😮💨 Really want to emphasize that pet ownership is a huge cost financially, physically, and mentally. And like with kids you rarely ever get a day off. I think it's important for influencers to acknowledge this as they can make owning lots of animals and species easier than it is. It's ultimately worth it to me but I always appreciate hearing that I'm not the only one who struggles with fatigue. I also don't drive so transport is a nightmare. And don't get me started on incompetent vets who undervalue your pets and the situation! I was told by one small animal vet regarding my gerbil with extremely severe head tilt and seizure like fits of rolling that there was no possible treatment and that he could live on just fine as is. I had to fight to have him euthanized after he suffered several more days, living off hand feeding and some metacam I had on hand. Oops this reply is very long but this all hit a nerve. Sending positive vibes to all the pets and peeps out there that are struggling health and otherwise right now!❤ remember to relish in the quiet, tender moments

Your vet experience resinates with so many. it’s frustrating and upsetting. I do hope you have found success with your visit to another vet you researched and mentioned. Once you find ‘the one’ it will put your mind at rest for any future vet visits. Take care of yourself. Like everyone else, you are entitled to a ‘holiday’ so please try and not to feel pressure to always be in front of a camera for others. Your audience are and will always be here. So switch off and enjoy your life outside of KZitem. Take those well earned breaks before you run out of steam. ❤

although the algorithm does do that to creators, i dont think itll ever work that way with you because nobody else provides the amount of information you do in your videos regarding hamsters so we always come back! youre one of those people a community types the name of into the search bar, and whose recommended to anyone starting out. you're like the pewdiepie of hamsters

I’ve also heard a lot of that where I am (I’m also Canadian) about people with small animals being given crap/inaccurate advice or dismissed because their animals are “pocket pets” (don’t like that term) and so they don’t matter like a dog or cat does, I guess. I’ve had a vet give me weird/misinformed advice on a hamster as well. Don’t even get me started on some vets and nutrition when it comes to small animals. It’s bad.

The commercial paper bedding might be a cause of the hair or skin problem for some hamsters. I find nearly the paper bedding of all brands available are quite “dusty”, even though they claim themselves dust free. Some hamster may have more allergic reactions to it. I prefer to use food grade passed kitchen paper instead of the commercial paper bedding. A shredder can help make enough bedding easily, it can also save quite a lot of money in the long run.

While allergies definitely could be a possibility it would make more sense if it was also falling out underneath him where bedding touches him the most, it also wouldn't continue to regrow if he was allergic! Unfortunately, paper towels just don't provide a stable enough structure for proper burrowing.

Okay super long post but I'm very anxious and hoping you or some other hamsters owners in the comments will see this and read it and possibly help me out... My Syrian hamster Winnie has been unwell and we have been to the vet three times and if this last set of medications doesn't work, we will be referred to a vet in a larger city with the technology necessary to do a CT. I was wondering if you had any opinions or advice on modified cages/enclosures? When you have to use them for medical reasons. I've got Winnie in a bin cage that is only 300 square inches of floor space right now. I bought her a 12" saucer wheel because her regular 12" Silent Runner will not fit in this enclosure. She has a wooden hide and a wooden staircase going up to that hide that also doubles as a second hide. I've added a large paper cup on its side and put some sand in there, sprinkled some food, put the water dish on top of the wooden hide, and added a chew boredom breaker. I plan to add some form of boredom breaker every night before bed. I have to keep her in a tiny enclosure to monitor her pee and poop closely, and to completely clean out and sanitize everything within the bin cage every 2-3 days. I also have to collect poop samples when I do this in a designated container. I also have to medicate Winnie twice a day. With all this being said, do you think this poor setup will be fine for short term? The vet says it should be okay and that if no improvements are seen and I get referred to the other vet, then we can reassess the setup situation, but it'll be 10 days before she finishes her medication. I'm very concerned about keeping her in this setup that long but also I have to? What has your experience been with temporary setups for medical purposes? She's only shown stress behaviours once so far (wall scaling) but thats when I gave her a boredom breaker and then she was fine but who knows if she did more stress behaviours overnight while I was asleep. Money is also an issue because I have spent $700ish on the vet so far and a CT alone will be several hundred dollars most likely, so I have to be cautious. She also only has 4 inches of bedding at the deepest part of this setup and she LOVES to burrow. But in her regular setup, which is a 70 gallon tank that normally has 12+ inches of bedding, I can't monitor the amount she is pooping and peeing in a day very well. She's lost a lot of weight so the monitoring is really important. I just feel bad and I don't know what to do.

Hey!! You technically could create more space by making a small modification to the bin to be able to fit the upright wheel. I did this to a past bin, I took a large-ish container and cut out the mesh on the lid and zip tied the container on top so the lid is still able to go on without affecting the wheel. I don't know if I have any videos of it but if you need more clarification to how it looks I can try to find it in one of my videos ☺️ I think based on the situation for short term it is okay, If you can I probably would try to find a slightly bigger bin just so you can allow more enrichment since it can be hard to fit Syrian sized things in that amount of floorspace! Sometimes we have to do what we have to do when it comes to their health, and while it's not an ideal setup for a healthy hamster it's what's needed in order for you to monitor/collect samples etc. I really hope you can find out what's wrong with her, I'm rooting for you guys! ❤️

Hey Penny, I had a thought. You could call the vet and ask them what their experience is with Hamsters, explain that you are an enthusiast and that you want the best care for Nickle & Penny. Their response should give you a good idea what their motivation and skill set is at that practice. If they are hesitant to see you, you know you're most likely dealing with a more trustworthy vet who knows their limitations, keep them in mind for other animals. This is also a vet you can ask for a referral from. They will most likely know who is good in the area. Ask them who they would take their hamster too. God bless!

The only issue is most of the vets don't have the time to talk on the phone and aren't in every day of the week, their answers more or less will be "yes we take hamsters" which doesn't help me.

Hi Victoria !!!! I just want to say thank you for all the hamster care you provided for me and my sister, we got are hamster august 27 and he was roughly 1 - 2 months old and we didn’t have proper care we had a 10 gallon aquarium and we only gave him 2 inches of bedding and pellets for food but around a week after we got him I watched your hamster video about proper hamster care and I was shocked about how much I messed up in his care so me my dad and my sister hoped in the car got him a bin and made it his home, we added plenty of bedding and lots hideouts and sprays and seed mix thanks to you Mr Ham (aka hammy) is living his best life!!!!! He is way more exited to look around for food and go in his multichamber hideout!!!! We couldn’t do it without you!!! And I’m so incredibly sorry that you had to go through all this stress! But we just want to say thank you. ❤️🐹

Just wanted to say that your story is awesome! I got my first hamster in 1994, when I was ten years old. The internet was very primitive back then, and there was no KZitem. The "big cage" my dad bought was too small, as we know now. I feel bad, but I can't turn back the clock. I'm very happy to hear that today's hamsters have a better quality of life, because young people like you have KZitem and other great resources for pet care.

In uk it’s just like what happened to you in my experience one vet said it wasn’t serious I went to another vet with the mites and they said it was series but op to scrap to new skin with no mites might not work and be expensive. My hamster dead within two weeks of getting mites

I hate when they say that hamsters are cheap so we should spend money on their care. Both of my cats were $25, and my other one was free. Does that mean I just get a new one when they need vet care? Of course not!! I spent $200 at the vet immediately after getting my hamster because he had a swollen toe. Do I regret that? Of course not! I want my baby to have his best life! Also, I’m so so fortunate that the vet I found for my hammie is just lovely. He wore loops to be able to see my little guys toe better, and he told me to call if I needed anything at all. And my little guys toe is doing much better 💕

So sorry you got a vet that was acting that way. We had to take our little Waffles to an emergency vet and have his eye removed. We didn't even ask the cost because he is part of the family. $1500 later he lived his best little life until we had to have him put to sleep on April 1 💔 luckily we have had great vets for the 2 we have had recently. Glad to see you back and hopefully things start looking up for you 🐹
