he inaugural UEFA European Championship, often referred to as the 1960 Euros, marked the beginning of a prestigious football tournament that would grow to become one of the most significant in the sport. Held in France from July 6 to July 10, 1960, this first edition featured a final stage with only four teams: the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and France.
The tournament was born out of a vision by French football administrator Henri Delaunay, who proposed the idea back in the 1920s. Although Delaunay did not live to see his dream realized, the trophy awarded to the champions was named in his honor. The 1960 Euros saw the Soviet Union crowned as the first champions of Europe, defeating Yugoslavia 2-1 in a thrilling final held at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
