I did notice that your channel always has a consistent look, I think it's very cool to see how you achieve it. I would never have guessed some of those images came from separate fashion plates, you do such a good job. I really appreciate the work you put into this. Question though: If you're just going to make the eggshell paper the background, why bother attaching it to the fashion plate itself first?
@EllieDashwood
2 жыл бұрын
Aw! Thank you! And that’s a great question. I have a whole list of reasons. 😂 But put simply, putting the texture on the artwork itself is vital for: evening out the texture of the whole image (otherwise, there is often a stark contrast between white space in the image that I’ve masked out and the original artwork’s texture that is still visible in other areas), creating a consistent look (that slight pinkness does change the image itself and make it look like it naturally goes with the slight pink background. That’s why I blend it over the whole image instead of putting it behind), and several more reasons too. For example, even though the fashion plate in the video has a rectangle shape that would have been easy to crop around vs. masking it off, I masked it for a reason. I left this out of the video for time and simplicity's sake, but when creating that mask, I feathered the selection, which created slightly softer edges. This makes the image look like it melts into the paper more naturally vs. harsh crop lines. But now that edge is feathered, it needs the paper texture to feather into. And now that I’ve already written a long rambling answer, I shall stop even though I have more reasons. 😂

Thanks for showing your process for finding and editing images! My favorites are the fashion plates with the speech/thought bubbles. They remind me of paper dolls or popsicle stick puppets and are just so playful and cute. I think it’s hard to do a short video on manipulating images in photoshop because the program itself can have a high learning curve. But sharing your basic process of how to find open source images, correcting fading and yellowing, then giving them all a consistent look that makes them easy to add to your other graphics provides a good jumping off point for figuring out what tutorials to seek out to learn more details if needed.

Hi Ellie, great video and timely for me! I am looking into buying a new computer and some video editing software. Years ago, I used Photoshop but would have to relearn it, and I have never used Lightroom, or Adobe Premier Pro. My question is, would I need all of these programs, two of these programs, or could everything be done in one program, Adobe Premiere Pro for example?
@EllieDashwood
2 жыл бұрын
That’s so exciting that you’re going to get into video editing!!! 😃 I think it depends on what type of videos you want to create. Premiere Pro is the main software you’d need for video editing. I personally use Photoshop a lot because of the classic art needed in my videos. Premiere Pro can’t edit artwork that way. But besides editing classic art, I use Photoshop for creating my thumbnails, editing Instagram pictures, etc. Lightroom is great for organizing photos and doing simple edits. It’s quite a powerful program but still not as powerful as Photoshop. So basically, Premiere Pro is what’s needed for editing a video. Photoshop and Lightroom are there to edit still images and create YT thumbnails, channel artwork, etc. Anyway, I hope that helps!

I'm reading that the Edwardian Period is 1901-1919. Austen wrote during the Georgian Era (late 1700's), and published during the early Regency Era (1811-1820). So Edwardian is more or less 100 years on from Austen.

Yes! I love process videos. This was super handy, and exactly my level of Photoshop, so it's nice to see how you streamlined processes that I would take longer to sort out! And putting them in Premiere Pro was super helpful too! I also LOVE the artwork and your branding colours and graphic design, they were immediately appealing when I found your channel. It's such eye candy, like a Sofia Coppola movie! And I often screenshot the manor house images to help me with my architecture illustration 💛🌙🌟✨

Love this video. Love to see the technical skill behind something like this channel, which too often gets dismissed as only having "soft" skills behind it (not that soft skills are bad- they definitely deserve more respect than they get being undervalued by our society for their perceived nature of being "women's skills"- but if both types of skills are used for this channel, they should both be praised)

This was such a pleasant video. You have an eye for using the artwork (and other graphics) to help illustrate your points and add interest to your narration. That you combine separate plates or works into one frame is so well done! As for a favorite, I like them all - classic art and fashion plates! But with your modern twist: modern music in the background, a strong/different color wash, embellishments such as a sprinkling of hearts to indicate like/love/infatuation and so forth. Create and work onward Miss Dashwood! (I can just imagine Mr. Disney watching your process and saying, "Now she's got something here!")
