I'm glad I started my small channel and would randomly post videos, but growth was painfully slow. Then, last August, I committed to doing two videos a week, no matter what, and even though it was a lot of work while doing my full-time private practice, I've seen my tony channel start growing, from 75 subscribers to about 245 now. It's not a lot, but it has start to uptick, and Im certain that this will continue if I just stay the course and focus on helping as many people overcome stress, anxiety, and depression as possible. Great ideas here, thanks Gary

Need to get back on mine and start my other channel. I had a melt down, bawled my eyes out trying to make a video for Gary over a student constantly missing finishing tasks on time. Not my coolest moment lol Since then I've gone back to basics, just writing for me and posting on LinkedIn as that does have reasonable traction still and also to counteract the sniffling sob posts I'm seeing lately. Talk about a pathetic trend. Totally understand why it's happening, pity is rife right now but trying to manipulate interaction with vulnerability is ineffective, disconnecting and builds distrust in the long run. I really don't get it. So my antidote, write my own shite instead 🙃😉

Regarding Instagram, it’s so true how a lot of people are upset it’s not just a “post a photo and write a caption” process anymore, but as a videographer I love seeing everything shift more towards video! 👏🏻 it’s been so exciting seeing all the growth with video, now feeling super inspired to put out more content across all platforms for my new business 🎥

Gary, a few months ago on KZitem someone said one stream of income is too close to zero and I realize I’m being held hostage at my job. I work for a private equity fund as their head attorney. I am a “successful” attorney in Hollywood but yet my entire future is in the hands of one man and that made me mad (I asked for review 10 months ago and I still haven’t gotten it and I still haven’t received a compensation increase even though I’ve been working my ass off for the last two years)-so I decided to start a KZitem channel. And oh man I love it. It’s sparking so much joy in me. I’m finally able to create after 20 years. My number one goal for creating in KZitem channel is I want my dad who is 80, who is fighting prostate cancer to not have to work in the fields anymore growing Chinese squash and bitter melon and selling the to restaurants. As an immigrant (like you) I grew up working at the swapmeets and I was the first to go up to college and the first to go to law school. It was my dream when I went to Berkeley to be a novelist and a storyteller but I had to put that aside. I put that dream in a jar on a shelf and for the last 16 years I have been helping creatives achieve their creative vision. Recently I’ve been thinking about what is my legacy? My kids yes but wants something tangible and creative that I’m creating in the world? I really want to help other working moms feel better about themselves. My first video talks about being on a Sean Penn movie set but yet being consumed by so much mom guilt because I had my daughter with me but I couldn’t make the time to take her to the Bronx zoo. I want other moms to know that it’s not as perfect and glamorous as you think it is on social media so my channel is about a working mom hope old back to veil on all of it especially, working in Hollywood. Gary, I can tell are a good man who wants to wants to give back, I can read that because I have training as an executive coach. Your last video were you just kept meeting that guy that needed you to see him for his potential versus all of his mistakes was just inspiring. You really have a good heart. I love to hear that you actually read every comment and respond but that sounds impossible since you put out so much content. I have seen you in your videos meeting people like that young man five years ago and you made him spell out his name and now he is super successful on KZitem. I know it takes dedication and putting out content every day and I’m not looking for overnight success that isn’t earned. I’m doing that on top of my full-time job as an entertainment attorney and with two young kids. I usually work on my content between the hours of 11 PM and 2 AM and I’m currently doing Ali Abdaal’s Part Time KZitem Academy as well. And you know what? I have never felt as much joy as I do working on my videos. Last night I worked on scripting my video about how to put together an independent film in Hollywood and the three hours just flew by. I no longer buys stuff to stave off my stress or unhappiness, my headaches and back pain have disappeared. I finally understand what it means to feel joy and satisfaction in my “work.” I’ve been a perfectionist my whole life in this thing is so new and uncomfortable for me I do not know how to figure out to YT yet but I guess that’s part of the creative process-failing early and failing often as my husband, the architect would say. If you could look at my channel or give me some advice and point me in the right direction-it would be like being able to kiss the ring of a king and being blessed. Or I’m happy to have a conversation. But I know your time is very valuable. I’ve written a few other creators like Casey Neistat who inspired me to start making videos. But he never responded and we have a mutual friend. I don’t really expect to hear back but I’m putting this out into the universe and I just want you to know that it’s great that there are people like you out there trying to teach and help at least one person feel less alone and less like a loser like the man in your last video-he just kept telling you to bash him and you had no interest in doing that at all. That’s just not who you are.

Great story. I'm not a successful KZitemr but I checked out your channel. I watched a video on your channel called "what it's like on a movie set in NYC." Nice work. You have great on-screen presence. You can improv really well and tell a good story. I definitely think you should make more videos and perhaps do some acting as well. Also, you look like you could be a good writer as well. Maybe start a blog too. If you have time. I agree with Gary about making lots of content. It's the way forward. But I would urge you to do more long form videos where you tell long stories because you're really good at that. Maybe start a commentary channel in a niche that you like. There's a huge audience for long form commentary content. Like Podcasts. Podcasts and commentary channels are kind of related. If possible, don't have guests on your podcast. It's too difficult to find interesting guests in the long run. That's why Emma Chamberlain does so well with her Podcast. She just rants about whatever she wants, whenever she wants. She has no excuse to not create. You name dropped a lot of people in your video "what its like on a movie set in nyc." I would caution you about doing too much of that in the future. This is your KZitem channel. You're the star. We're watching it for you, not them. You are making the film industry interesting for us. We want to know what you think about life. We want you to make sense of the world for us. The audience wants a story and a character, but what this really means is that they want a relationship. It's something that is difficult for Hollywood to do. But KZitem excels at relationships. I suspect you are afraid of failure and seek approval. That's why you want feedback from Gary. I'm the same. It's my kryptonite. However, you have a big advantage because you're charming enough to get away with making a lot of mistakes. The audience actually likes to see bad videos where KZitemrs make authentic mistakes. Where they jump without a net, and then crash and burn. Just start making lots of vids. You're one of those rare people who could look good on a bad day. The name of your channel is okay, but using your own name would be better for building a brand. It allows you to do multiple jobs, do multiple KZitem niches, vlog them all, and still be relevant. However, there may be legal issues involved, since you're an attorney. The attorney situation may be problematic for your KZitem channel. I'm not sure what to say about that. Attorney's have to be more careful. You could document your commercial film work with a vlog, but commercial film sets are notoriously secretive. The entire commercial film industry is problematic for KZitemrs because of all the legal issues. A possible alternative is to talk about the commercial film industry in a metaphoric sense, in order to avoid legal liabilities. Or make your own films and document that process. Or just don't talk about the commercial film industry. You're so good at talking that you could literally talk about anything. Good luck.

@@FixItOnTheWay oh wow. Thanks so much for this. I can’t believe how much time you took to respond to me and to be so thoughtful about it. You’re totally right on so many points of course I grew up with the traditional, critical Chinese mom who never gave me affirmation. It’s work that I’m doing on my own for sure. I’m not sure that I was really looking for affirmation or approval from Gary but more like professional advice on how to succeed on KZitem but I already know the answer-I just have to make a lot of content and actually like you said fail many times. But you know the universe likes to laugh at us and my second long form video is going totally sideways right now because I didn’t script it and I had to squeeze it in before I got major dental surgery for a broken tooth and a rebuild of my nasal cavity. Anyway I love this so much I’m going to keep on making videos it meant the world to me to get this response from another person. I so appreciate your kindness. You certainly did not need to respond but the fact that you did just reaffirmed my love of humanity. I truly believe most people are out to help and to make things a little better in this world. As for my channel name I really would like to use my name but I’m trying to stay under the radar professionally so perhaps I will change it to my name soon but for right now I have to keep it as is. Thank you! I watch your videos they are good. I hope you will make more videos in the future! All the best. And I appreciate you.

I really appreciated this. Especially the call out over the algorithm, it’s so easy to blame that when really you’re just doing the same stuff that’s been done for years and people are more likely to interact with videos. We’ve known this even before tiktok and reels. My issue is that as an artist it’s hard to find “filler” content because while I can show timelapses what I’m working on, it can get boring real quick. I also show what’s being created in my shop too. I can’t produce different art pieces for each day it’s not feasible when pieces can take me weeks. I was thinking tutorials, but I don’t know what else to do. Maybe tips about the digital software I use? I’m not sure. I’ve been taking a break from social media for a few weeks because I’m replanning my content strategy. I’ve been growing on tiktok, but IG is stuck. Even when my reels blow up, I gain nothing from it. Tiktok I at least get follows and shop views! Thank you for reminding me of shorts too, I have content I could post there and maybe it’ll push me to start making full fledged KZitem content. There’s so much resistance to tiktok videos in the art community, but they’re not that difficult. You can make them what you want and it doesn’t have to be perfect. That’s why I started there and I’m glad I did. There’s a lot of effort needed for KZitem videos, tiktok is way more casual and low key.

Hey Mrs Quills! Sounds like one thing Gary is suggesting in your situation is a podcast 😬 (unless you're good at writing and hate being on video). Sounds weird, but watching lots of Gary's other content, he always finds a way to turn pretty much anything into a podcast or Facebook group. Who's your ideal customer? And what are their needs/wants/pain points? Then interview people who want to discuss these things. Example: I want to sell branding services to artists = I interview artists and talk about the struggles of being discovered, branding, and social media marketing. Then you take that interview, chop it up, and blast it on the correct platforms.

I would say keep at it and always do things you have fun and love doing - ask yourself, if everything you’ve done thus far, what do you like the most? Also, I’ve heard Gary say, “Don’t judge yourself until you’ve posted 500 pieces of content on TikTok.” I really liked that quote because it’s more about quantity (of course it needs to be good) and how it reflects your enjoyment of the process. Lead with enjoyment, test the underpriced attention platforms and strategies, be willing to adapt and you’ll be 👍

I am a content creator on both TikTok (250K+) and KZitem Shorts (100K+) and TikTok is the worst marketing strategy ever, it is the absolute worst in terms of management, conversions, hate, mental health and business due to the fact that it is a Chinese company literally having mobs as employees all over the world (a little bit like the mods on Twitch). Like, this is so unfair from you to not even adress this as being a huge problem for every content creators and businesses.
